Long-term Agricultural Experiments: Data Management Survey
<p>Results of an online survey used to guage views of researchers within the LTE community on data management issues and knowledge. Fostering safe food handling among consumers: Data from an online survey experiment with 1,973 consumers from Norway and the UK
<p>Data and replication codes for the article "Fostering safe food handling among consumers: Causal evidence on game- and video-based online interventions". 1,973 participants from the UK and Norway, aged 18- 89 years, were assigned to (i) a control condition, or (ii) exposed to a brief information video, or (iii) in addition played an online game (two different conditions). In all conditions, participants answered a pre-survey and seven days later a post-survey. In the survey, next to collecting some information on sociodemographic background and certain preferences, subjects reported some recent food safety behaviors and we elicited beliefs in the efficacy of certain food safety actions, as well as beliefs in myths related to food and hygiene.</p> <p>We use this data set in our publication <br> Koch, A. K., Mønster, D., Nafziger, J., & Veflen, N. (2022). Fostering safe food handling among consumers: Causal evidence on game-and video-based online interventions. <em>Food Control</em>, 108825.</p>
Survey of participant experience in workshop for testing IGP software setup: supplemental dataset for SimAUD 2018
<p>This is a supplemental dataset for a SimAUD 2018 paper. For the context of the dataset, plots, and description text given here, please refer to the paper:</p> <blockquote> <p><strong>Heinrich, M.K., Zahadat, P., Harding, J., et al. Using interactive evolution to design behaviors for non-deterministic self-organized construction. In <em>Proc. of SimAUD</em> (2018). <em>In print</em>.</strong></p> </blockquote> <p>These survey results <em><strong>(see attached file dataset_survey-responses)</strong></em>, are regarding the experience of participants in a workshop testing the <em>Integrated Growth Projection</em> software setup, including an implementation of the <em>Vascular Morphogenesis Controller</em>, and the Interactive Evolution software <em>Biomorpher</em>.</p> <p>The full-time one-week workshop was held as part of the normal coursework of the Master's degree program <em>CITAstudio: Computation in Architecture</em>, in the Institute of Architecture and Technology, at [KADK] The Royal Danish Academy, School of Architecture, Copenhagen, Denmark. It was part of the first semester of the 2017-2018 school year. Workshop participants were current Master's students in the <em>CITAstudio </em>program. The workshop teaching was led by Mary Katherine Heinrich and Phil Ayres, with guest teaching by Payam Zahadat and John Harding, overall program teaching supervision by Paul Nicholas, and teaching assistance by Sebastian Gatz.</p> <p><strong>Survey method:</strong></p> <p>The workshop participants gave survey responses anonymously.</p> <p>Survey responses were collected via Google Forms (https://www.google.com/forms/about/). At the start of the survey, participants gave permissions for use and publication, and verified that they participated in the workshop and had not previously taken the survey. The platform discourages duplicate responses by requiring an email sign-in (which is not visible to the surveyor).</p> <p>Although workshop participants gave permission for survey results to be published before taking the survey, the participants were unaware of the specific intended context and purpose of publishing, prior to taking the survey. Authors of the related paper who were workshop participants had no contact with the process of survey preparation, analysis of its results, or writing of related paper sections. </p> <p>There were 26 workshop participants. Participants were architects or architectural designers. </p> <p>Participants were asked about 1) their prior experience, 2) their understanding of topics before and after the workshop, 3) the helpfulness of specific software aspects for their understanding and their project work, and 4) their likelihood to use specific software aspects in the future.</p> <p>In addition to looking at the full surveyed group, we compare experience sub-groups. Participants select relevant tasks that they have previously completed, from a provided list. They are placed in the <em>Less Experience</em> sub-group if they select one or no tasks, and in the <em>More Experience</em> sub-group if they select two or more. </p> <p><strong>Survey results:</strong></p> <p>Close to two-thirds of workshop participants submitted survey responses (16 of 26, or 61.5%), with at least two respondents per group. One respondent indicated workshop absence; their responses were removed. One respondent indicated that they did not understand two questions, so those two responses were removed. Those with less prior experience improved their understanding more than others, and understanding of "Interactive Evolution" improved slightly more than understanding of "self-organization." </p> <p>Responses regarding the usefulness of certain software aspects <em><strong>(see attached file, Plot_2)</strong></em> give evidence that: 1) Interactive Evolution helped participants to understand and design a non-deterministic self-organizing behavior <em><strong>(see Plot_2, a)</strong></em>; 2) visualization of the environment and simultaneous viewing of multiple results helped them to understand and design such behaviors <em><strong>(see Plot_2, b and c)</strong></em>; and 3) the <em>Integrated Growth Projection</em>'s features of environment visualization and simultaneous results <em>inside</em> the artificial selection preview windows of the IE setup helped them to evolve behaviors to solve their chosen tasks<em> <strong>(see Plot_2, d and e)</strong></em>. </p> <p>____________________________________</p> <p>The research work involved here is part of EU project<em> flora robotica</em>.<br> <a href="http://www.florarobotica.eu/">http://www.florarobotica.eu/</a><br> Project<em> flora robotica</em> has received funding from the European Union's Horizon 2020 research and innovation program under the FET grant agreement, no. 640959.</p>
PBG08 Grasshopper density survey in the Patch-Burn Grazing experiment at Konza Prairie
PBG datasets are associated with a long-term, large-scale study that is addressing the effects of fire-grazing interactions in the context of a Patch-Burn Grazing management system designed to promote grassland heterogeneity. Effects of patch-burn grazing management on plant and animal diversity and the nature and variety of wildlife habitat are being assessed in two replicate management units, each consisting of three pastures (watersheds) designated C03A/C03B/C03C and C3SA/C3SB/C3SC. In each patch-burn grazing unit, one watershed is burned and two that are left unburned in a given year. The burning treatments are rotated annually so that each pasture is burned every third year. Each patch-burn grazing unit is paired with an annually-burned pasture for comparison with traditional grazing systems (C01A and C1SB). All grazing units are stocked with cow/calf pairs from approximately 1 May until 1 Oct at a stocking density equal to 3.2 ha per cow/calf. To examine the impact of patch burning and grazing in all 8 units, we monitor changes in plant species composition, residual biomass, grassland bird populations, insect populations, small mammal populations, soil nutrients, and stream water quality1 (1C3SA/C3SB/C3SC unit only). The KSU Department of Animal Science monitors cattle performance, including weight gain and body condition to assess the economic feasibility of using patch-burn management on a widespread basis. This data set focuses on measuring grasshopper density using ring count method (Onsager 1977*) at watersheds C03A, C03B, C03C, C01A, C3SA, C3SB, C3SC, and C01B. Grazing intensity is estimated (Joern 2005) at each site at time of density measurements to model how grasshopper populations respond to grazing.
Ferns surveys of individuals of terrestrial ferns in Canopy Trimming Experiment (CTE) plots document changes in species richness and abundance over time in response to canopy opening and/or debris deposition
Whole plot surveys of Canopy Triming Experiment (CTE) plots were done to detect changes in the number of terrestrial fern species and individuals in response to canopy opening and debris deposition. Surveys were conducted annually prior to and after treatments. A count of all terrestrial ferns, identified to species on the CTE plots was recorded for each subplot in January during CTE1 (2002-2010) and in the fall during CTE2 (2014-present). The surveys document losses of individuals of shade tolerant fern species and the appearance of open canopy ferns such as the tree fern Cyathea arborea. A rich dataset of hourly residential electricity consumption data and survey answers from the iFlex dynamic pricing experiment
<p>An experiment was conducted to understand if and how households change their power consumption in response to variable hourly electricity prices. The data were collected from several Norwegian regions, and various price signals were tested over two winter periods from early 2020 to spring 2021. The dataset includes hourly consumption data of all participating households and answers to three surveys about household characteristics such as electric appliances, living conditions, socio-demographic variables, and willingness to be flexible. Temperature data are added to the dataset from public sources. This comprehensive dataset can be used for in-depth analysis of household flexibility potential. McMurdo Dry Valleys Upper Pond Nematode Survey Experiment
In January 2001, we surveyed streams and ponds above 300 m asl in Taylor Valley, South Victoria Land, Antarctica. One pond was examined in detail. Organic materials covered nearly 100% of the adjacent soil to 5-20 m from the shore, with intermittent patches to 80 m. Organic matter averaged 257 gC/m2, and totaled 1388 kg organic C on the soil around the pond. Soil moisture content (0.56 to 12.41%) decreased with distance from shore, whereas pH (7.8 to 10.8) increased with distance. Electrical conductivity was lowest in the soils less than 10 m from the pond (416 +- 94 uS/cm). Mineral soil organic C and total N concentrations were greatest between 10-30 m from the edgeof the pond (1.21 +- 0.37 and 0.13 +- 0.05 mg/g soil, respectively). Soil invertebrates were present in only 50% of samples and included tardigrades, rotifers and two nematodes, Scottnema lindsayae and Plectus antarcticus. A non-parametric, discriminant function analysis based on soil moisture, soil organic carbon and electrical conductivitycorrectly predicted 87.0% of sites that had invertebrates and 70.8% of sites for which invertebrates were absent. Tardigrades, rotifers and Plectus were found only in the wettest soils nearest the pond whereas Scottnema was restricted to drier soils farther from shore. Other ponds and streams also showed substantial accumulations of organic matter, suggesting that upland wetlands serve as resource islands in these polar deserts that provide a source of organic matter to nearby soils.
McMurdo Dry Valleys Soils Snowfence Nematode and Metazoa Survey Experiment
Increases in soil moisture from snow packs may influence distribution and abundances of soil invertebrates. In this study, two snow fences were erected in Lake Fryxell and Lake Bonney basins to trap snow and examine the effects of increased snow pack on soil physical, chemical and biological properties.
Dataset based on survey experiment measuring party selectors' stereotypes about ethnic minority aspirants
<p>This is a restricted dataset based on a survey experiment conducted among local party chairs in Flanders (Belgium) in 2019 (N=597). The objective of the experiment was to test whether party chairs hold stereotypes about ethnic minority aspirants, i.e. whether they evaluate ethnic minority aspirants differently than similar ethnic majority aspirants. </p> <p>During the experiment, each participant was presented one ethnic minority (Moroccan name) and one ethnic majority (Flemish name) aspirant in a randomized order. Two different policy profiles were randomly distributed between the two aspirants and both aspirants were each randomly assigned a low or a high SES (having either a university or lower secondary school degree). After being presented an aspirant, the participants were asked to evaluate him (we only used male first names) in terms of ideological position, competence and trustworthiness. </p> <p>This dataset includes for each participant information about the exact profile of the aspirants who were evaluated (their ethnicity, SES and policy profile), the evaluation scores granted to these aspirants and information about manipulation checks included in the survey experiment. </p> <p>The two profiles which were presented during the survey experiment are the following:</p> <p>Profile 1: <br> The 46 year old [Victor Claes OR Mohammed El Amrani] has a wife and two children. He has a [university degree OR lower secondary degree]. [Victor OR Mohammed] is a member of several local associations and has been a member of your party since two years. <br> [Victor OR Mohammed] wants to increase the citizens’ well-being. When possible, extra cycle routes should be put in place, circulation plans should become more straightforward and traffic safety in school environments should be enhanced. The candidate wants to embellish the streets and is in favour of a more innovate approach against high vacancy rates in the housing market. [Victor OR Mohammed] advocates more efficient spatial planning. More space should be provided for new and growing enterprises whilst preserving sufficient green, open spaces. The supply of public transport should be enhanced throughout the whole municipality. [Victor OR Mohammed] wants to invest in both youngsters and the elderly. Blind spots in child care should be erased and nursing homes should remain affordable. Multi-purpose halls should be accessible to a wide and inclusive supply of activities to connect all citizens. Finally, [Victor OR Mohammed] wants to increase both the capacity of the local schools and the level of education they provide. </p> <p>Profile 2: <br> [Victor Claes OR Mohammed El Amrani] is 43 years old. He has a [university degree OR lower secondary degree]. He became a member of your party in 2016. He and his wife have one daughter. [Victor OR Mohammed] is a member of several local associations.<br> [Victor OR Mohammed] strives towards a more liveable municipality. Investments in the public domain should provide sufficient facilities for young and old. Think about new play grounds, sport fields and pétanque courts. Environments should be given more freedom to develop and innovate. Thereby, expanding firms who contribute to local employment as well as small local entrepreneurs should be given the necessary attention. [Victor OR Mohammed] advocates a cleaner and greener municipality and wants to set up an effective plan against litter. The candidate wants to implement new subsidies for the local leisure industry aimed at providing facilities for disabled people and lower tariffs for people with low incomes. Regarding mobility, [Victor OR Mohammed] wants more and better lighting on cycle routes. Shortcuts through residential areas should be made less accessible and more investments in central connecting roads are desirable. Finally, unemployed people should be actively encouraged to find a new job and guided towards employment.</p> <p> </p> <p> </p>
