Grasshopper counts and feeding damage at the GCE-LTER Seawater Addition Long-Term Experiment (SALTEx) in 2016
Grasshopper abundance and feeding damage were investigated at the Georgia Coastal Ecosystems (GCE) LTER Seawater Addition Long-Term Experiment (SALTEx) study area approximately monthly in 2016. We conducted visual surveys in each replicate plot and counted 3 species of grasshopper (Romalea, Leptysma, Orchelimum) and scored grasshopper feeding damage on 2 species of plants (Zizaniopsis, Pontederia).
Oyster Microcystis aeruginosa feeding experiments, Lafayette-Louisiana, 2021-2022
To determine how the presence of the potentially harmful cyanobacteria M. aeruginosa affects oyster feeding, we quantified clearance rates, pseudofeces production, and pseudofeces composition across two feeding experiments conducted with a non-toxic strain. The first experiment consisted of bialgal feeding experiments where single oysters were fed treatments consisting of 1) only M. aeruginosa, 2) only the diatom Thalassiosira pseudonana, or 3) a 50/50 mix of the two species. To quantify effects of M. aeruginosa on oyster feeding under more environmentally relevant conditions — which includes numerous phytoplankton prey options and the presence of inorganic particles — a second feeding experiment was conducted using a natural phytoplankton community collected from a local estuary and oyster habitat. This natural community was then used to create two treatments, 1) an amended treatment where non-toxic M. aeruginosa was added, and 2) a natural treatment where only M. aeruginosa growth medium without cells was added.

<p>In variable environments, sampling information on habitat quality is essential for making adaptive foraging decisions. In insect parasitoids, females foraging for hosts have repeatedly been shown to employ behavioral strategies that are in line with predictions from optimal foraging models. Yet, which cues exactly are employed to sample information on habitat quality, has rarely been investigated. Using the gregarious parasitoid <i>Nasonia vitripennis</i> (Walker) (Hymenoptera: Pteromalidae), we provided females with different cues about hosts to elucidate, which of them would change a wasp's posterior behavior suggesting a change in information status. We employed posterior clutch size decisions on a host as proxy for a female's estimation of habitat quality. Taking into account changes in physiological state of the foraging parasitoid, we tested whether different host qualities encountered previously change the subsequent clutch size decision in females. Additionally, we investigated whether other kinds of positive experiences - such as ample time to investigate hosts, host feeding, or egg laying - would increase a wasp's estimated value of habitat quality. Contrary to our expectations, quality differences in previously encountered hosts did not affect clutch size decisions. However, we found that prior egg laying experience changes posterior egg allocation to a host, indicating a change in female information status. Host feeding and the time available for host inspection, though correlated with egg laying experience, did not seem to contribute to this change in information status.</p>
Data from: Evolution of a cross-feeding interaction following a key innovation in a long-term evolution experiment with Escherichia coli
<p>The evolution of a novel trait can profoundly change an organism's effects on its environment, which can in turn affect the further evolution of that organism and any coexisting organisms. We examine these effects and feedbacks following the evolution of a novel function in the Long-Term Evolution Experiment (LTEE) with <em>Escherichia</em> <em>coli</em>. A characteristic feature of <em>E. coli</em> is its inability to grow aerobically on citrate (Cit<sup>−</sup>). Nonetheless, a Cit<sup>+</sup> variant with this capacity evolved in one LTEE population after 31,000 generations. The Cit<sup>+</sup>clade then coexisted stably with another clade that retained the ancestral Cit<sup>−</sup> phenotype. This coexistence was shaped by the evolution of a cross-feeding relationship based on C<sub>4</sub>-dicarboxylic acids, particularly succinate, fumarate, and malate, that the Cit<sup>+</sup> variants release into the medium. Both the Cit<sup>−</sup> and Cit<sup>+</sup> cells evolved to grow on these excreted resources. The evolution of aerobic growth on citrate thus led to a transition from an ecosystem based on a single limiting resource, glucose, to one with at least five resources that were either shared or partitioned between the two coexisting clades. Our findings show that evolutionary novelties can change environmental conditions in ways that facilitate diversity by altering ecosystem structure and the evolutionary trajectories of coexisting lineages.</p>

Dental mesowear is applied as a proxy to determine the general diet of mammalian herbivores based on tooth-cusp shape and occlusal relief. Low, blunt cusps are considered typical for grazers and high, sharp cusps typical for browsers. However, how internal or external abrasives impact mesowear, and the time frame the wear signature takes to develop, still need to be explored. Four different pelleted diets of increasing abrasiveness (lucerne, grass, grass and rice husks, grass, rice husks and sand) were fed to four groups of a total of 28 adult goats in a controlled feeding experiment over a six-month period. Tooth morphology was captured by medical CT scans at the beginning and end of the experiment. These scans, as well as the crania obtained postmortem, were scored using the mesowear method. Comparisons between diet groups only showed few significant differences after six months, irrespective of whether CT scans or the real teeth were scored. Only when assessing the difference in signal between start and end did relevant, significant diet-specific effects emerge. Diets containing lower phytolith content caused a more pronounced change in mesowear towards sharper cusps/higher reliefs, while the feed containing sand did not result in more extreme changes in mesowear when compared to the same feed without sand. Our experiment suggests that the formation of a stable and hence reliable mesowear signal requires more time to develop than six months.
