Making connections: Coding, weaving and flamenco

As part of the city-wide Sheffield Showcase weekend across the city in September 2021, live coding musician Lucy Cheesman, researcher/choreographer Rosa Cisneros and researcher/musician Alex McLean collaborated on a drop-in family workshop held at Pitsmoor Scout Hut in Sheffield UK. We explored different kinds of patterns with participants, focussing on the underlying algorithmic structures. In particular we explored weaving patterns using a semi-automated handloom driven by a simple programming language, sonic patterns using the live coding environment TidalCycles, and flamenco patterns using notations and of course our bodies! Film produced by Reel Master Production - https://www.reelmasterproduction.uk This workshop was funded as part of Sheffield Showcase with support from the University of Sheffield and Sheffield City Council, and a UKRI funded 'making connections' grant awarded via the UK Science Festivals Network. The film, and Alex McLean's participation was funded as part of the European Research Council's PENELOPE project.

FLABASE: A Flamenco Knowledge Base

FlaBase (Flamenco Knowledge Base) is the acronym of a new knowledge base of flamenco music. Its ultimate aim is to gather all available online editorial, biographical and musicological information related to flamenco music. A first version is just being released. Its content is the result of the curation and extraction processes. FlaBase is stored in JSON format, and it is freely available for download. This first release of FlaBase contains information about 1,102 artists, 74 palos (flamenco genres), 2,860 albums, 13,311 tracks, and 771 Andalusian locations.

Data sources

Data was compiled and curated from different sources: Wikipedia, DBpedia, Andalucia.org, elartedevivirelflamenco.com, MusicBrainz, flun.cica.es/index.php/grabaciones/base-datos-grabaciones and juntadeandalucia.es/institutodeestadisticaycartografia/sima

Using this dataset

For more details on how these files were generated, we refer to the following scientific publication. TONAS: a dataset of flamenco a cappella sung melodies with corresponding manual transcriptions

This dataset contains a music collection of 72 sung excerpts representative of three a cappella singing styles (Deblas, two variants of Martinete).
The distribution is as follows:

16 Deblas

36 Martinete 1

20 Martinete 2

This collection was built in the context of a study on similarity and style classification of flamenco a cappella singing styles (Tonas) by the flamenco expert Dr. Joaquin Mora, Universidad de Sevilla.

We refer to (Mora et al. 2010) for a comprehensive description of the considered styles and their musical characteristics. All 72 excerpts are monophonic, their average duration is 30 seconds and there is enough variability for a proper evaluation of our methods, including a variety of singers, recording conditions, presence of percussion, clapping, background voices and noise.

We also provide manual melodic transcriptions, generated by the COFLA team and Cristina López Gómez.

Using this dataset

When TONAS is used for academic research, we would highly appreciate if scientific publications of works partly based on the TONAS dataset quote the following publication:

Music material

Mora, J., Gomez, F., Gomez, E., Escobar-Borrego, F.J., Diaz-Banez, J.M.
