The cardinal was the founder of the chapel in which the painting is located, he died in 1293. It may be thought that some parts of the painting date from this time, but repainted are important. Fresco of Saint Bridget of Sweden (1303 - 1373)
There is a small apse, between the choir and the sacristy of the Cathedral of Terracina, work to clean the blackened and deteriorated plaster brought to light years ago the underlying layer occupied by a fairly well preserved fresco, at least in the visible portion. Inexplicably, the cleaning work that, after that discovery, should have led to a more careful restoration work, was suspended and almost forgotten. And yet, the workmanship, the delicacy of the colors and lines, the shape of the figure, appear to be of considerable artistic value. The interest of the discovery, however, is not limited to the undoubted formal value of the work, but it is integrated by the historicity of the subject, confirmed by the coeval inscription to the figure that shows: "Beata Brigida ". Catacombs of San Gennaro Duck Fresco
The arched niche (arcosolium) for 2 graves (plus some later tombs above them; today destroyed) is located on the left side of a burial chamber near the end of the main corridor in the lower level of the catacomb. The paintings may date from the 4th century A.D., but are destroyed to a certain extent. The ceiling shows a geometric pattern, the fields of which are filled with reddish blooms and cruciform or round objects. A hanging garland is preserved on both side walls. While on the right one below it you recognize (perhaps) only the foot and parts of a standing bird, on the left wall you see clearly a chubby bird, mostly identified as duck. 3D model was made in RealityCapture software using 183 images and 2 laser scan positions. Additional processing was completed in Geomagic Wrap, InstantMeshes, and Blender. The arched niche (arcosolium) for 5 burials is located in a hypogeum (an underground tomb of greater size) in the upper level of the catacombs. The niche is currently dated in the 3rd century AD and belongs to the oldest part of that level. The catacombs itself were used for burials from the 2nd century AD to the Middle Ages. Paintings: A red-green-orange frame system divides the surface in geometrical motives, in which different objects are placed such as birds, flowers, vessels, festoons and – bottom left – a ram with a thyrsus (a rod which is the attribute of Dionysus and his companions). The arched niche (arcosolium) for 4 burials is located near the end of a corridor of the upper level of the catacombs. Paintings: The front part of the reveal shows the busts of the Apostles Peter (right) and Paul (left) with Christograms. The field below Paul depicts a Christogram and the Greek letters Alpha and Omega (Symbols for the beginning and the end). In bad condition are the 2 figures in the back part of the reveal. An inscription identifies still 1 of them as Sossus, Saint of Miseno. The paintings are currently dated in the 5th century. DStretch. On the upper level of the catacombs, a small corridor ends with this arched niche above 1 tomb. The back wall is decorated with the bust of a deceased woman, Servia, in prayer position, two opened books with the names of the four evangelists (Mark, John, Luke and Matthew) and a Christogram. The reveal shows a leaf tendril, crosses, a Christogram and the Greek letters Alpha and Omega. The focus of the front side of the niche lay – above marble imitations and under a red inscription plate without letters – on the two Apostles Paul (left) and probably Peter (right) in front of exedrae. The burial chamber (cubiculum) is located in the upper level of the Catacomb. Most parts of the chamber are painted. Only the niche on the back wall was decorated with mosaics, which are mostly lost today. An apostle and a saint in front of an exedra stand in each niche on the sidewalls: the nominated Paulus and Laurentius (right); Petrus und probably Gennaro (left) – the inscriptions of these two are not preserved today. The saints hold in the hands a martyr wreath. Marble imitation decorates the front side of these tombs. The ceiling shows a geometrical decoration system.
