<p><strong>Mars orbital images of fresh impacts from CTX</strong></p> <p>This data set contains images obtained from observations of Mars by the Context Camera (CTX) on the Mars Reconnaissance Orbiter. Each image in this collection is a cropped region of roughly 1.8 x 1.8 km (300 x 300 pixels at 6 m/pixel). The data set consists of "positive" images centered on the location of known fresh impacts on the surface of Mars (using a fresh impact catalog [1]) and "negative" examples obtained by randomly sampling CTX images (uniformly over the surface of Mars).</p> <p><strong>Contents</strong></p> <p>The 6829 images are divided into training and validation sets to capture the configuration used to train a fresh impacts image classifier [2]. However, they can be pooled together as a single data set for other purposes (but note that augmented versions are provided only for the training data). </p> <ul> <li>training_data/: 6156 images + 5 augmented versions per image</li> <li>validation_data/: 673 images (not augmented)</li> </ul> <p>Labels are indicated in the filenames. Positive examples start with a 0, and negative examples start with a - (negative sign).</p> <p>We employed augmentation on the training examples to generate 5 augmented versions per original image. Data from: Feasting in fresh water: impacts of food concentration on freshwater tolerance and the evolution of food x salinity response during the expansion from saline into fresh water habitats
Saline to freshwater invasions have become increasingly common in recent years. A key hypothesis is that rates of freshwater invasions have been amplified in recent years by increased food concentration, yet this hypothesis has remained unexplored. We examined whether elevated food concentration could enhance freshwater tolerance, and whether this effect evolves following saline to freshwater invasions. We examined physiological response to salinity and food concentration in a 2 × 2 factorial design, using ancestral brackish and freshwater invading populations of the copepod Eurytemora affinis. We found that high food concentration significantly increases low-salinity tolerance. This effect was reduced in the freshwater population, indicating evolution following the freshwater invasion. Thus, ample food could enable freshwater invasions, allowing subsequent evolution of low-salinity tolerance even under food-poor conditions. We also compared effects of food concentration on freshwater survival between two brackish populations from the native range. Impacts of food concentration on freshwater survival differed between the brackish populations, suggesting variation in functional properties affecting their propensity to invade freshwater habitats. The key implication is that high food concentration could profoundly extend range expansions of brackishwater species into freshwater habitats, potentially allowing for condition-specific competition between saline invaders and resident freshwater species.

Data from: Impact of enrichment conditions on cross-species capture of fresh and degraded DNA
By combining high-throughput sequencing with target-enrichment ("hybridization capture"), researchers are able to obtain molecular data from genomic regions of interest for projects that are otherwise constrained by sample quality (e.g. degraded and contamination-rich samples) or a lack of a priori sequence information (e.g. studies on non-model species). Despite the use of hybridization capture in various fields of research for many years, the impact of enrichment conditions on capture success are not yet thoroughly understood. We evaluated the impact of a key parameter – hybridization temperature – on the capture success of mitochondrial genomes across the carnivoran family Felidae. Capture was carried out for a range of samples types (fresh, archival, ancient) with varying levels of sequence divergence between bait and target (i.e. across a range of species) using pools of individually indexed libraries on Agilent SureSelect arrays. Our results suggest that hybridization capture protocols require specific optimization for the sample type that is being investigated. Hybridization temperature affected the proportion of on-target sequences following capture: for degraded samples, we obtained the best results with a hybridization temperature of 65 °C, while a touchdown approach (65 °C down to 50 °C) yielded the best results for fresh samples. Evaluation of capture performance at a regional scale (sliding window approach) revealed no significant improvement in the recovery of DNA fragments with high sequence divergence from the bait at any of the tested hybridization temperatures, suggesting that hybridization temperature may not be the critical parameter for enrichment of divergent fragments.
