Microwave-to-optical conversion with a gallium phosphide photonic crystal cavity

<p>Electrically actuated optomechanical resonators provide a route to quantum-coherent, bidirectional conversion of microwave and optical photons. Such devices could enable optical interconnection of quantum computers based on qubits operating at microwave frequencies. Here we present a platform for microwave-to-optical conversion comprising a photonic crystal cavity made of single-crystal, piezoelectric gallium phosphide integrated on prefabricated niobium circuits on an intrinsic silicon substrate. The devices exploit spatially extended, sideband-resolved mechanical breathing modes at ~3.2 GHz, with vacuum optomechanical coupling rates of up to&nbsp;g<sub>0</sub>/2&pi;&nbsp;&asymp;&nbsp;300 kHz. The mechanical modes are driven by integrated microwave electrodes via the inverse piezoelectric effect. We estimate that the system could achieve an electromechanical coupling rate to a superconducting transmon qubit of ~200 kHz. Our work represents a decisive step towards integration of piezoelectro-optomechanical interfaces with superconducting quantum processors.</p>

Selective recovery of boron, cobalt, gallium and germanium from seawater solar saltworks brines using N-methylglucamine sorbents: Column operation performance

<p>The European Union (EU) identified a list of Critical Raw Materials (CRMs) crucial for its economy, aiming to&nbsp;find alternative sources. Seawater is a promising option as it contains almost all elements, although most at low&nbsp;concentrations. However, to the present, the CRMs' recovery from seawater is technically and economically&nbsp;unfeasible. Other alternatives to implement sea mining might be preferred, such as reverse osmosis brines or&nbsp;saltworks bitterns (after sodium chloride crystallisation). The CRMs' extraction in a selective way can be achieved&nbsp;using highly selective recovery processes, such as chelating sorbents. This study focuses on extracting Trace&nbsp;Elements (TEs) from solar saltworks brines, including boron, cobalt, gallium and germanium, using commercial&nbsp;N-methylglucamine sorbents (S108, CRB03, CRB05). The application of these sorbents has shown potential for&nbsp;boron recovery, but their selectivity for cobalt, gallium, and germanium requires further investigation. This&nbsp;research aims to assess these sorbents' kinetics and column mode performance for TEs recovery from synthetic&nbsp;bitterns. Boron and germanium were rapidly sorbed, reaching equilibrium (&gt;90 %) within 1 h, except for S108,&nbsp;which took 2 h. In column mode, 20&ndash;25 pore volumes of bittern were treated to remove boron and germanium,&nbsp;but competition from other elements reduced treatment capacity. An acidic elution (1 M hydrochloric acid) allowed to elute them (&gt;90 %), reaching concentration factors for germanium and boron of 35 and 11,&nbsp;respectively, while cobalt and gallium had less affinity for the sorbents. In addition, the experiments performed&nbsp;were fitted by a mass transfer model to determine the equilibrium constants and selectivities. Therefore, bittern&nbsp;mining has been proven as a secondary/alternative source to obtain CRMs, which can lead the EU to a position in&nbsp;which its dependence on other countries to obtain these raw materials would be decreased.</p>

Reactivity Switch of Platinum with Gallium: From Reverse Water Gas Shift to Methanol Synthesis

<p><span>The development of efficient catalysts for the hydrogenation of CO<sub>2</sub> to methanol using &ldquo;green&rdquo; H<sub>2</sub> is foreseen to be a key step to </span><span>close the carbon cycle</span><span>.</span><span> In this study, we show that small and narrowly distributed alloyed PtGa nanoparticles supported on silica, prepared via a surface organometallic chemistry (SOMC) approach, display notable activity for the hydrogenation of CO<sub>2</sub> to methanol, reaching 7.2 mol h<sup>-1</sup> mol<sub>Pt</sub><sup>-1</sup> methanol formation rate with a 54% intrinsic CH<sub>3</sub>OH selectivity. This reactivity sharply contrasts with what is expected for Pt, which favors the reverse water gas shift reaction, albeit with a poor activity (2.6 mol h<sup>-1</sup> mol<sub>Pt</sub><sup>-1</sup>). <em>In situ</em> XAS studies indicate that ca. 50% of Ga is reduced to Ga<sup>0</sup> yielding alloyed PtGa nanoparticles, while the remaining 50% persist as isolated Ga<sup>III</sup> sites. The PtGa catalyst </span><span>slight</span><span>ly dealloys under CO<sub>2</sub> hydrogenation conditions and displays redox dynamics with PtGa-GaO<sub>x</sub> interfaces, responsible for promoting both CO<sub>2</sub> hydrogenation activity and methanol selectivity. Further tailoring the catalyst interface by using a carbon support in place of silica enables to improve the methanol formation rate by a factor of ~5.</span></p>

Data from: Interfacial tension hysteresis of eutectic gallium-indium

<p>When in a pristine state, gallium and its alloys have the largest interfacial tensions of any liquid at room temperature. Nonetheless, applying as little as 0.8 V of electric potential across eutectic gallium indium (EGaIn) placed within aqueous NaOH (or other electrolyte) solution will cause the metal to behave as if its interfacial tension is near zero. The mechanism behind this phenomenon has remained poorly understood because NaOH dissolves the oxide species, making it difficult to directly measure the concentration, thickness, or chemical composition of the film that forms at the interface. In addition, the oxide layers formed are atomically-thin. Here, we present a suite of techniques which allow us to simultaneously measure both electrical and interfacial properties as a function of applied electric potential, allowing for new insights into the mechanisms which cause the dramatic liquid metal, oxidation, and interfacial tension decrease in interfacial tension.  A key discovery from this work is that the interfacial tension displays hysteresis while lowering the applied potential. We combine these observations with electrochemical impedance spectroscopy to evaluate how these changes in interfacial tension arise from chemical, electrical, and mechanical changes on the interface, and close with ideas for how to build a free energy model to predict these changes from first principles.</p>

Integrated Gallium Phosphide Nonlinear Photonics

<p>Gallium phosphide (GaP) is an indirect bandgap semiconductor used widely in solid-state lighting. Despite numerous intriguing optical properties|including large chi(2) and chi(3) coefficients, a high refractive index (&gt; 3), and transparency from visible to long-infrared wavelengths (0.55-11 \mum) its application as an integrated photonics material has been little studied. Here we introduce GaP-on-insulator as a platform for nonlinear photonics, exploiting a direct wafer bonding approach to realize integrated waveguides with 1.2 dB/cm loss in the telecommunications C-band (on par with Si-on-insulator). High quality (Q &gt; 105), grating-coupled ring resonators are fabricated and studied. Employing a modulation transfer approach, we obtain a direct experimental estimate of the nonlinear index of GaP at telecommunication wavelengths: n2 = 1.2(5)*10^17 m^2/W. We also observe Kerr frequency comb generation in resonators with engineered dispersion. Parametric threshold powers as low as 3 mW are realized, followed by broadband (&gt; 100 nm) frequency combs with sub-THz spacing, frequency-doubled combs and, in a separate device, efficient Raman lasing. These results signal the emergence of GaP-on-insulator as a novel platform for integrated nonlinear photonics.</p>
