Data from: Will Current Protected Areas Harbour Refugia for Threatened Arctic Vegetation Types until 2050? A First Assessment

<p>We present predictions of Arctic vegetation for 2050 based on a combination of climate models (namely,&nbsp; EC-Earth3-Veg,&nbsp; IPSL-CM6A-LR, and MRI-ESM2-0), emission scenarios (names, SSP126 and SSP585) and tree dispersal rate scenarios (unrestricted, 20km and 5km) based on the methods of Pearson et al. (2013) and the new raster version of the Circumpolar Arctic Vegetation Map (CAVM) (Raynolds et al. 2019). We additionally present a dataset summarising total areas for each vegetation type in the CAVM and the forecasted models based on the computation of zonal histograms in ArcGIS (zonal_histogram_results.csv), for the total Arctic as well as only within protected areas, defined by the Map of Arctic Protected Areas (CAFF and PAME 2017). We also present a potential map of refugia for what we deem the realistic model (IPSL, SSP585, 20 km tree dispersal) as a raster file. Refugia were identified as regions where the vegetation remained the same between the CAVM and the predictions. Additionally, we present a map of model agreement, showing the degree to which other models agree with the vegetation classification for our refugia.</p> <p>All predictions named according to the tree dispersal rate, climate model, and emissions scenario, preceded by the term &quot;pred&quot;. For example: &quot;pred_unres_mri_585&quot; represents the unrestricted tree dispersal, MRI-ESM-0 climate model, and SSP585 scenario-based prediction. "Non facciamo la guerra, combattiamo i rifiuti!"_FishArt.Participatory Art for environmental sustainability and aesthetic transformation of Anzio Fishermen's Harbour

<p>FishArt is a 10-month international project funded by the New European Bahahus Cross-KIC Connect 2024 written by and granted to Chiara Certoma&rsquo; (UniTo &ndash; now at UniRm1) and led by Laura Corazza (UniTo), in collaboration with Raw-News, Platoon and the fishermen cooperatives of Anzio (Rome, Italy). FishArt promotes a radically participatory art and education process supporting the requalification of the Fishermen&rsquo;s Harbour in the coastal city of Anzio, Italy.As part of the FishArt project agenda, transect walks and educational training initiatives have been combined in a major event, strongly requested by the local community. The synergy between local institutions and international research aims to stimulate civic participation on the problem of marine pollution and the care of the coastal territory.The event &ldquo;Let&rsquo;s not make war, let&rsquo;s fight waste!&rdquo; is a civic initiative promoted by the Extraordinary Commission supported by the Environment Area of the Municipality of Anzio which aims to involve all the components of civil society for a collaborative cleaning of the beaches, transforming the celebrations of the Anzio/Nettuno landing into a moment of sharing and to raise awareness against marine pollution.</p>

Cameroonian blackflies (Diptera: Simuliidae) harbour a plethora of (RNA) viruses

<p>Fasta file (blackfly_viral_genomes.fasta) with identified virus sequences in Cameroonian blackflies and a corresponding table with their taxonomy when possible (taxonomy_data.tsv). Characterising underwater noise and changes in harbour porpoise behaviour during the decommissioning of an oil and gas platform

<p>Many man-made marine structures (MMS) will have to be decommissioned in the coming decades. While studies on the impacts of the construction of MMS on marine mammals exist, no research has been done on the effects of their decommissioning. The complete removal of an oil and gas platform in Scotland in 2021 provided an opportunity to investigate the response of harbour porpoises to decommissioning. Arrays of broadband noise recorders and echolocation detectors were used to describe noise characteristics produced by decommissioning activities and assess porpoise behaviour. During decommissioning, sound pressure levels in the frequency range 100 Hz to 10 kHz were 30-40 dB higher than baseline, with the presence of vessels being the main source of noise. The study detected small-scale (&lt; 2 km) and short-term levels of porpoise displacement during decommissioning, with porpoise occurrence increasing immediately after this. These findings can inform the consenting process of future decommissioning projects.</p>

Reef effect of offshore structures on the occurrence and foraging activity of harbour porpoises

<p class="MsoNormal">With increasing numbers of offshore structures to be decommissioned, a better understanding of their effect on marine predators is timely. There is some evidence that oil and gas platforms may attract marine mammals acting as artificial reefs. However, it is unclear whether different man-made structure designs have similar effects. Further, due to the lack of baseline data prior to installation, it is unknown whether artificial structures modify the diel patterns of occurrence and foraging behaviour of marine mammals. Here, we used passive acoustics to investigate the occurrence and foraging activity of harbour porpoises (<em>Phocoena phocoena</em>) around three artificial structures of different age and complexity. We deployed an array of echolocation click detectors (CPODs) in 2021, along a gradient of distances to these structures and assessed the extent to which porpoises were attracted to them. We also investigated the effect of these structures on the diel patterns of occurrence and foraging activity of porpoises. The probability of porpoise occurrence and foraging activity decreased with distance from offshore structures. A significant increase in porpoise occurrence and foraging was detected during night-time compared to daytime around all three offshore structures (&lt; 200 m). Comparing pre- and post-installation porpoise detections, the daily patterns of occurrence and foraging activity shifted from a weak <a>diel</a><span class="MsoCommentReference"><span> </span></span>pattern before the structure was installed, to a strong nocturnal pattern when the structure was present. These findings provide evidence that marine mammals are attracted to man-made structures and that porpoises modify their diel patterns of occurrence and foraging activity around them. This research suggests that offshore structures play an important role as foraging areas for marine mammals and provides key information for the decommissioning process.</p>

Estimating the abundance of the critically endangered Baltic Proper harbour porpoise (Phocoena phocoena) population using passive acoustic monitoring

<p>Knowing the abundance of a population is a crucial component to assess its conservation status and develop effective conservation plans. For most cetaceans, abundance estimation is difficult given their cryptic and mobile nature, especially when the population is small and has a transnational distribution. In the Baltic Sea, the number of harbour porpoises (<i>Phocoena phocoena</i>) has collapsed since the mid-20<sup>th</sup> century and the Baltic Proper harbour porpoise is listed as Critically Endangered by the IUCN and HELCOM; however, its abundance remains unknown. Here, one of the largest ever passive acoustic monitoring studies was carried out by eight Baltic Sea nations to estimate the abundance of the Baltic Proper harbour porpoise for the first time. By logging porpoise echolocation signals at 298 stations during May 2011-April 2013, calibrating the loggers' spatial detection performance at sea, and measuring the click rate of tagged individuals, we estimated an abundance of 71-1,105 individuals (95% CI, point estimate 491) during May-October within the population's proposed management border. The small abundance estimate strongly supports that the Baltic Proper harbour porpoise is facing an extremely high risk of extinction, and highlights the need for immediate and efficient conservation actions through international cooperation. It also provides a starting point in monitoring the trend of the population abundance to evaluate the effectiveness of management measures and determine its interactions with the larger neighbouring Belt Sea population. Further, we offer evidence that design-based passive acoustic monitoring can generate reliable estimates of the abundance of rare and cryptic animal populations across large spatial scales.</p>

Increasing numbers of harbour seals and grey seals in the Solent

<p>Harbour seals (<i>Phoca vitulina</i>) and grey seals (<i>Halichoerus grypus</i>) both occur within the UK, but display regional contrasting population trends. Whilst grey seals are typically increasing in number, harbour seals have shown varying trends in recent decades following repeated pandemics. There is a need for monitoring of regional and local populations to understand overall trends. This study utilised a 20-year dataset of seal counts from two neighbouring harbours in the Solent region of south England. Generalised additive models showed a significant increase in the numbers of harbour (mean 5.3 to 30.5) and grey seals (mean 0 to 12.0) utilising Chichester Harbour. Conversely, in Langstone Harbour there has been a slight decrease in the number of harbour seals (mean 5.3 to 4.0). Accompanying photographic data from 2016-18 supports the increase in seal numbers within Chichester Harbour, with a total of 68 harbour and 8 grey seals identified. These data also show evidence of site fidelity of harbour seals in this area, with almost a quarter of animals resighted within the past three years. Overall, this long-term study indicates an increasing number of both harbour and grey seals within the Solent. However, more research is required to identify the drivers of this trend.</p>

High rates of vessel noise disrupt foraging in wild harbour porpoises (Phocoena phocoena) - scripts and example dataset

<p>This upload contains Matlab scripts used to compute third-octave levels from audio recorded with DTAG-3 tags on free-ranging harbour porpoises. It also contains examples of results, outputs of such scripts (hp12_272a_noisedata.mat and hp12_293a_noisedata.mat), for two of the seven animals in the study, as well as sensor data for all the animals (e.g. hp12_272a_prh625.nc). The metadata for all the uploaded data are stored in netCDF files (.nc) and the overview plots show noise, vessel presence and foraging data for all study animals. Finally, the upload contains scripts that use the results to perform a series of permutation tests to compare foraging buzz count and total buzz duration in minutes with high- and low-level noise.</p>
