Correlation of native and exotic species richness: a global meta-analysis finds no invasion paradox across scales

This data set is also available on the Dryad Digital repository (link : https://doi.org/10.5061/dryad.59kv753) This dataset was created for investigating the biotic resistance hypothesis, that is, the idea that species‐rich communities are more successful at resisting invasion by exotic species than are species‐poor communities. It has been argued that native–exotic richness relationships (NERR) are negative at small spatial scales and positive at large scales, but evidence for the role of spatial scale on NERR has been contradictory. However, no formal quantitative synthesis had previously examined whether NERR is scale‐dependent across multiple studies, and previous studies on NERR have not distinguished spatial grain and extent, which may drive very different ecological processes Therefore, a global systematic review was carried out to create this dataset, which includes 204 individual cases of observational (non‐experimental) NERRs from 101 publications. Further, the above-mentioned hypotheses were investigated using a hierarchical mixed‐effects meta‐analysis, which showed that NERR was indeed highly scale dependent across studies and increased with the log of grain size. Also, no clear patterns of NERR across different spatial extents were found, suggesting that extent plays a less important role in determining NERR than does grain, although there was a complex interaction between extent and grain size. Almost all studies on NERR were found to have been conducted in North America, western Europe, and a few other regions, with little information on tropical or Arctic regions. NERR was also found to increase northward in temperate regions and vary with longitude. These results were published in the paper titled Correlation of native and exotic species richness: a global meta‐analysis finds no invasion paradox across scales (Peng et al. 2018), which represents the first global quantitative analysis of scale‐based NERR.

The invasion paradox dissolves when using phylogenetic and temporal perspectives

<p>1. Elton's prediction that higher biodiversity leads to denser niche-packing and thus higher community resistance to invasion has long been studied, with species richness as the predominant measure of diversity. However, few studies have explored how phylogenetic and functional diversity, which should represent niche space more faithfully than taxonomic diversity, influence community invasibility, especially across longer time frames and over larger spatial extents.</p> <p>2. We used a 15-year, 150-site grassland dataset to assess relationships between invasive plant abundance and phylogenetic, functional, and taxonomic diversity of recipient native plant communities. We analyzed the dataset both pooled across all surveys and longitudinally, leveraging time-series data to compare observed patterns in invasion with those predicted by two community assembly processes: biotic resistance and competitive exclusion. We expected more phylogenetically and functionally diverse communities to exhibit greater resistance to invasion.</p> <p>3. With the pooled dataset, we found support for the longstanding observation that communities with more native species have lower abundance of invasive species, and a more novel finding that more phylogenetically diverse communities had higher abundance of invasive species. We found no influence of aggregate (multivariate) functional diversity on invasion, but assemblages with taller plants, lower variability in plant height, and lower seed mass were less invaded. Viewed longitudinally, the phylogenetic diversity relationship was reversed: the most phylogenetically diverse communities were most resistant to invasion. This apparent discrepancy suggests invasion dynamics are influenced by both site attributes and biotic resistance and emphasizes the value in studying invasion across time.</p> <p>4. Synthesis: Our results provide insight into the nuances of the diversity-invasibility relationship: invasion dynamics differed for different dimensions of diversity and depending on whether the relationship was evaluated longitudinally. Our findings highlight the limitations of using single time-point "snapshots" of community composition to infer invasion mechanisms. </p>

However, mean NERR was not negative at any grain size, although there was high heterogeneity at small grain sizes. We found no clear patterns of NERR across different spatial extents, suggesting that extent plays a less important role in determining NERR than does grain, although there was a complex interaction between extent and grain size. Almost all studies on NERR were conducted in North America, western Europe, and a few other regions, with little information on tropical or Arctic regions. We did find that NERR increased northward in temperate regions and also varied with longitude. We discuss possible explanations for the patterns we found, and caution that our results do not show that invasive species are benign or have no negative consequences for biodiversity preservation. This study represents the first global quantitative analysis of scale-based NERR and casts doubt on the existence of an "invasion paradox" of negative NERR at small scales and positive correlations at large scales in non-experimental studies.

Invader-pollinator paradox: invasive goldenrods benefit from large size pollinators

<p><b>Aim</b>: Mutualistic interactions between alien plants and native pollinators are needed to enable plant invasions. Although the increasing abundance of invasive plants in a habitat causes a dramatic decline of native pollinators, pollination services received by invaders are often sustained. This invader-pollinator paradox might be attributed to differences in pollination efficiency and varying vulnerability to invasion among pollinators with different life-history traits. In an experimental study, we explored the relationships between pollinator body size, pollination efficiency and abundance of invasive species.</p> <p><b>Methods</b>: We placed a pair of potted invasive goldenrods (<i>Solidago gigantea</i>) at 25 sites differing in goldenrod abundance (cover: 0–100 %). Floral visitation rate of the potted goldenrods, as well as seed set and viability, were noted.</p> <p><b>Location</b>: Kraków area, Poland.</p> <p><b>Results</b>: Species richness of pollinators visiting inflorescences decreased with the increase of the goldenrod cover, whereas the floral visitation rate remained unchanged. However, the seed set was positively related to the goldenrod cover. Body size of floral visitors was structured along with the goldenrod cover so that pollinators' size increased with the cover. Also, the seed set of the potted plants, as well as goldenrod seed viability, depended positively on the body size of visiting pollinators.</p> <p><b>Main conclusions</b>: Invasive goldenrods did not suffer from pollinator shortage and inefficient pollination, especially in habitats densely covered by the invader, due to the presence of large-bodied pollinators. Our study highlights that pollination and reproduction of invasive plants might be sustained through ecological filtering, affecting the composition of pollinators with traits increasing pollination efficiency.</p>
