Challenges to freedom of speech and journalists in Ukraine in times of war – Non-representative online expert survey of Ukrainian journalists (January 2023)

The expert survey of journalists was conducted from 18 to 27 January 2023 using a self-completion questionnaire in Google Forms. The survey was conducted by the Ilko Kucheriv Democratic Initiatives Foundation on the request of the Human Rights Centre ZMINA with the support of Freedom House Ukraine. A total of 132 people participated in the survey. The respondents were selected using the method of voluntary selection and snowballing to the point of saturation. The sample represents only the opinion of the respondents, but it also allows us to talk about certain trends and common assessments of certain phenomena and processes in the journalistic field. The survey includes questions about freedom of speech and self-censorship in the media environment during the Russian-Ukrainian war. The data collection contains original survey data. The Excel file (.xlsx) is the original file with the respondents' answers in Ukrainian, provided by the Ilko Kucheriv Democratic Initiatives Foundation. The documentation includes the questions and answer options of the original questionnaire in Ukrainian and English. Additionally, the data collection contains the "Summary" file, which is an analytical report prepared by the Ilko Kucheriv Democratic Initiatives Foundation and the Human Rights Centre ZMINA. The report uses data from an expert survey of journalists in 2019 and 2023, and the results of focus groups in 2022.

Data supporting research on journalistic production on science by press offices of universities and university centers in Rio Grande do Sul (2016)

These data are part of a final paper called Scientific Journalism in Community Higher Education Institutions in Rio Grande do Sul. The work was developed at the University of Vale do Taquari - Univates, between 2016 and 2017. The data is in Portuguese. The abstract of the paper is available below. Science occupies an important place in today's society. It is what has allowed us to reach our current stages of intellectual development and also to achieve memorable feats as a species. Science is produced, to a large extent, in the academic environment. This monograph focuses its efforts on trying to understand how 15 universities and university centers in the state of Rio Grande do Sul, partners in the Consortium of Community Universities of Rio Grande do Sul (Comung), carry out the dissemination of their academic production. It is understood that it is important to disseminate scientific information to the population so that individuals can critically evaluate the actions developed in the field of science. The general objective of this study is to investigate the production of scientific news in higher education institutions linked to Comung, as well as to characterize the relationships between the actors and processes related to the journalistic dissemination of science produced in these same institutions. The qualitative and quantitative analysis of the scientific dissemination texts was directed to the news published by the organizations, through an exploratory study that mapped all the production of the press offices between January and August 2016. Subsequently, a qualitative analysis of the discourse of press officers was carried out, after applying a questionnaire. Throughout the investigation, the hypothesis that the institutions disseminate their scientific production was confirmed, but they do so in markedly different ways. The study is available at this link: https://www.univates.br/bdu/items/4cdf0835-1fbe-425a-a216-2a511e9aabf8.

"I am a journalist myself, working for a public radio and television in the Netherlands. As a radio reporter Ivisited Bangladesh just after the cyclone Sidr hit the coastal area in November 1997 (…) Itravelled to the islands on a boat. On that boat were two boatmen and one of them started singing while we were sailing. As Igeotagged this song you can see exactly where it was. Iwas staying at that time in Pirojpur, took a taxi to the river and got a boat. Along tall typical motorboat. It was a journey of three-quarters of an hour during which he sang two songs." Assessing Vaccine-Related Content for Journalistic Quality: A large-scale dataset and article repository

This dataset was produced through a collaboration with the NSF-funded ARTT project (led by Hacks/Hackers) and Overtone. It consists of 1,000 vaccine-related articles, pulled from a wide variety of news media sources, with associated scores based on their journalistic quality. The scores were provided through Overtone’s algorithm, and range from one (low-quality or low informational value add) to five (high-quality or high informational value add). Articles were sourced from traditional journalism outlets (news and news-leaning websites), as well as non-journalistic sources of vaccine information, such as governmental websites, healthcare and NGO websites, and medical journals. Given the algorithm’s focus on editorial content, as opposed to other metrics such as author, outlet, or engagement, analyzing a diverse set of article types allowed the research team to examine how different styles of vaccine-related content measured against traditional journalistic quality standards. Therefore, this dataset provides a unique insight into the spectrum of vaccine reporting, and serves as a contribution to the field of automated quality assessment.

About ARTT: The Analysis and Response Toolkit for Trust (ARTT) project is focused on helping people engage in trust-building ways when discussing vaccine efficacy and other topics online.

About Overtone: Overtone has built a Natural Language Processing algorithm that finds and sorts online content by its intrinsic qualities, rather than clicks or shares. Their AI assesses texts for journalistic signals that demonstrate human effort.

For any questions about this dataset, please contact artt@hackshackers.com.
