Thickener behaviour in rolling elastohydrodynamic lubrication contacts
<p>This paper focuses on the study of thickener behaviour in elastohydrodynamic contacts using fluorescence microscopy and optical interferometry. A standard Ball-on-disc configuration tribometer was used as well as a newly developed Ball-on-ring configuration tribometer mimicking the conditions in a 6314 deep groove ball bearing. Three types of custom-made greases were used with the same base oil and Coumarin 6 fluorescent dye on the thickener.<span> </span>These greases contained no additives and were of the lithium complex and alicyclic di-urea type. It was confirmed that the behaviour of the grease was directly influenced by both the structure and type of thickener, and the differences were successfully observed by fluorescence microscopy. The concentration of thickener was found to change due to the formation or breakdown of the deposited thickener layer on the track. At low speeds, the alicyclic di-urea forms a thickener layer on the track that is more pronounced than the lubricating film formed by the base oil alone. The thickener layer formation also occurs at higher speeds when fully flooded conditions are beneficial in building the layer. Experiments with a Ball-on-ring tribometer show that the natural replenishment of the real contact geometry is more effective than on a Ball-on-disc tribometer, but the formation of the thickener layer on the track is more limited than in a Ball-on-disc tribometer with artificial replenishment. At higher velocities, a smaller but stable layer is formed where the layer does not change much from a certain velocity.</p>

Data for: Bioinspired Lubricity from Surface Gel Layers
<p>Surface gel layers on commercially-available contact lenses have been shown to reduce frictional shear stresses and mitigate damage during sliding contact with fragile epithelial cell layers <em>in vitro</em>. Spencer and coworkers recently demonstrated that surface gel layers could arise by polymerizing hydrogels within molds composed of low surface energy materials and near oxygen-rich interfaces from peroxidation gradients. In this study, polyacrylamide hydrogel shell probes (7.5 wt.% polyacrylamide, 0.3 wt.% methylenebisacrylamide) were polymerized in three hemispherical molds listed in order of decreasing surface energy and increasing oxygen permeability: borosilicate glass, polyetheretherketone (PEEK), and polytetrafluoroethylene (PTFE). Hydrogel probes polymerized in PEEK and PTFE molds exhibited 100´ lower elastic moduli at the surface (<em>E*<sub>PEEK </sub></em>= 80 ± 31 Pa and <em>E*<sub>PTFE</sub></em><sub> </sub>= 106 ± 26 Pa, respectively) than those polymerized in glass molds (<em>E*<sub>glass</sub></em><sub> </sub>= 31,560 ± 1,570 Pa), in agreement with previous investigations by Spencer and coworkers. Biotribological experiments revealed that hydrogel probes with surface gel layers reduced frictional shear stresses against cells (<em><em>τ</em><sub>PEEK</sub></em> = 35 ± 15 Pa and <em>τ<sub>PTFE</sub></em> = 22 ± 16 Pa) more than those without (<em>τ</em><em><sub>glass</sub></em> = 68 ± 15 Pa) and offered greater protection against cell damage when sliding against human telomerase-immortalized corneal epithelial (hTCEpi) cell monolayers. Our work demonstrates that the "mold effect" resulting in oxygen-inhibition polymerization creates hydrogels with surface gel layers that reduce shear stresses in sliding contact with cell monolayers, similar to the protection offered by gradient mucin gel networks across epithelial cell layers.</p>

Preparation and tribological properties of multi-layer graphene/silicon dioxide composites-based solid lubricant coatings at elevated temperatures

The high-</span>temperature<span> </span><span>tribological</span><span> </span><span>properties</span><span> </span><span>of</span><span> </span><span>the</span><span> </span><span>solid</span><span> </span><span>lubricant</span> coatings were investigated by friction and wear tester. <p>The videos show the testing of Nickel samples using a <span>a custom-built ring-on-block prototype against a SAE 1045 counter body ring.
