Managing multiple threats: Evaluating the efficacy of broad-scale introduced predator management in improving native mammal resilience to fire

<p>Preventing further biodiversity loss requires understanding which processes threaten biodiversity and the effectiveness of management actions in mitigating them. Threatening processes can interact in complex and unexpected ways, but different threats are often managed independently. Here, we develop a conceptual model to identify the conditions needed for management of a single threat to achieve a net conservation benefit in systems with multiple interacting threats, and demonstrate its relevance in a replicated case-study experiment. In Australia, introduced red foxes (<em>Vulpes vulpes</em>) and feral cats (<em>Felis catus</em>) may hunt vulnerable native mammals more effectively after fire, due to loss of understory vegetation. However, the efficacy of broad-scale control of introduced predators in improving native mammal resilience to fire has not been quantified. Moreover, many studies assessing the impacts of prescribed fire on species rely on a much smaller number of independent replicates. Using a natural before-after control-impact experiment with 14 prescribed fires, each &gt; 200 ha, we tested whether existing landscape-scale fox baiting programs influenced the immediate effects of prescribed fire on these two introduced predators and five medium-sized native mammals, including the threatened long-nosed potoroo (<em>Potorous tridactylus</em>) and southern brown bandicoot (<em>Isoodon obesulus</em>). Fox occupancy increased across both treatments post-fire, but baiting reduced the magnitude of increase. In contrast, mean feral cat occupancy remained constant in unbaited areas post-fire, but nearly doubled in fox-controlled areas, possibly due to a mesopredator release. Existing landscape-scale fox control programs did not clearly improve the short-term resilience of native mammals to prescribed fire (at least under the current fire and fox management regimes in our study landscapes). These results likely emphasise the need to integrate fire and predator management strategies for threatened faunal conservation iIn the presence of acute disturbances such as fire, threatened native mammals may require more intensive and integrated management of fire and introduced predators, such as &nbsp;(e.g., through more intensive targeted predator controlbaiting around fire events, or intensive protection usingthrough natural or artificial refuges).</p>

IMPLEMENTING AND EVALUATING A PAEDIATRIC EMERGENCY MANAGEMENT TRAINING PROGRAM FOR PRIMARY HEALTHCARE WORKERS IN ZARIA

<p>Nigeria continues to grapple with alarmingly high under-five mortality rates, with approximately 2,300 children dying daily due to preventable and treatable diseases such as pneumonia, malaria, and diarrheal illnesses. This crisis is particularly pronounced in rural areas, where childhood mortality rates are significantly higher than in urban centres. For many rural communities, primary healthcare (PHC) centres serve as the sole access point to medical services, making these centres critical to addressing this public health challenge. Despite their importance, PHC centres often face significant challenges, including inadequate infrastructure, limited access to essential medications, and a shortage of adequately trained health personnel.</p> <p>This study aimed to implement and evaluate a Paediatric Emergency Management Training Program for healthcare workers at PHC centres in Zaria, Kaduna State. The primary objective was to assess the effectiveness of the training in improving the competency of health workers in managing common paediatric emergencies, thereby enhancing the overall quality of care provided at these centres.</p> <p>A cross-sectional descriptive study was conducted involving 139 healthcare workers from selected PHC centres in Sabon Gari and Zaria Local Government Areas, utilizing a multi-stage random sampling technique. Data collection was performed using a pre-tested, semi-structured, self-administered questionnaire designed to evaluate the participants' baseline knowledge, followed by an assessment after the training intervention. The data were analysed using SPSS version 21, with chi-square tests employed to examine the associations between variables. Results were presented using tables and charts for clarity.</p> <p>The findings revealed a generally low baseline competency in managing common paediatric emergencies among the healthcare workers. Specifically, 66 (48.5%) of the respondents demonstrated very poor knowledge regarding the causes of common paediatric emergencies, 32 (23.5%) had poor knowledge, 34 (25.0%) had good knowledge, and only 4 (2.9%) of the respondents exhibited excellent knowledge. Similarly, knowledge regarding the treatment of these emergencies was also lacking, with 46.7% of respondents showing very poor understanding, 34.1% having poor knowledge, 16.3% demonstrating good knowledge, and only 3.0% showing excellent knowledge. A statistically significant relationship was observed between academic qualifications and knowledge levels in both causes (p = 0.004) and treatment (p = 0.000) of paediatric emergencies.</p> <p>The low baseline knowledge underscores the critical need for targeted training interventions. The study highlights the importance of establishing a sustained partnership between the Department of Paediatrics at Ahmadu Bello University Teaching Hospital and the Departments of Primary Health Care in Zaria and Sabon Gari Local Governments. Regular training workshops, held quarterly, are recommended to continuously equip PHC workers with the necessary skills to effectively manage paediatric emergencies, ultimately contributing to a reduction in childhood mortality rates in the region.</p>

LCC - Datasets for PlastiCircle Economic Evaluation of the Light Packaging Waste Management

<p>These datasets are related to deliverable 7.4 which presents the results from the economic assessment for the waste management systems evaluation of the city pilots and converter industries.</p> <p>PlastiCircle technologies allowed higher collection of plastic packaging and better input quality which might result in an increased market demand achieving the European recycling objectives. The higher volumes collected cause higher management costs which are compensated by higher remuneration from the PRO. The higher recovery resulted in higher recycling costs which are offset by higher revenues from sales. The evaluation of the industrial case studies indicates that the profitability of the production of industrial products using recycled post-consumer plastics is dependent of the market prices and the stability of the supply.</p>

S-LCA - Datasets for PlastiCircle Social Evaluation of the Light Packaging Waste Management (stakeholder perpectives)

<p>This deliverable (7.5) presents S-LCA results for the waste management systems in Valencia (Spain), Utrecht (Netherland) and Alba Iulia (Romania). Moreover, an extrapolation of the results has been calculated to show the results on the European level.</p> <p>Data is collected from groups of citizens, citizens associations, waste managers and municipalities (city hall workers).</p> <p>Questionnaires have been done in order to ask this groups of people questions to assess the social impact of the waste management systems in each city.</p> <p>Questions have been prepared according to the guidelines for social life cycle assessment of products - UNEP DTIE.</p>

LCA - Datasets for PlastiCircle Environmental Evaluation of the Light Packaging Waste Management

<p><strong>Datasets presented are related to Delievrable 7.3 - LCA.</strong></p> <p>To structure the environmental assessment, cities and industries are treated separately. The three pilot cities evaluated in PlastiCircle are:<br> 1. Valencia 2. Utrecht 3. Alba Iulia</p> <p><br> Within the project several technologies and strategies have been developed to improve the waste management of the pilot cities and other aspects in the value chain. Main developments spin around (a) citizens identification through a labelling system integrated on the container on a PAYT basis; (b) route optimization based on filling level sensors integrated on the container and corresponding algorithms for the optimization; (c) Eco-driving app to monitor the transport parameters and suggest efficient driving to the drivers. Moreover, on the sorting stage (d) PICVISA developed different improvement on their sorting equipment to enhance yield and purity on extracted fractions, and as well, a mechanical module to improve film recovery was developed. All these conditions have been evaluated on this report, focusing on the following sections:<br> 1. Collection &ndash; Impact of PAYT system on the pilot and quality segregation and IoT infrastructure.<br> 2. Transport &ndash; Impact of route optimization and efficient driving<br> 3. Sorting &ndash; Impact from yield and purity improvements and development of turbosorter</p> <p><br> For the sorting stage a model has been designed for each pilot waste recycling plant, focusing on the energy used per tonne, the yield of each fraction on the plant and the input waste as main parameters, inter alia.</p> <p>As a bridge between the cities and the final converters, there is a need of a proper pre-treatment/ conditioning of the post-consumer polymer to provide quality standard feedstock to the industries. PlastiCircle, lacks a partner on the consortium undertaking these tasks on an industrial level, however, different lab scale trials and some trials with Sorema have been assessed during the project, also considering broken down processes to evaluate impact on these intermediate stages taking into consideration processes such as the ones used by European industries as Sorema or Herbold, and other processes extracted from literature and commercial solutions:<br> 4. Washing/Pre-treatment &ndash; Impact on the pre-conditioning for plastic packaging bales.</p> <p><br> Once plastic is ready as flakes or pellets forms, industries within the project use those recycled plastic as raw materials to manufacture their products. Their different processes have been defined analysed, performing specific LCA for each one of their results considering the trials and impacts from the developments done during the project.</p> <p>Attached&nbsp;datasets used for the LCA models in PlastiCircle can be found.</p>

Results from Performance Evaluation and Testing of Virtual Infrastructure Managers

<p>NFV leverages Cloud Computing principles to move the data-plane network functions from expensive, closed and proprietary hardware to so-called Virtual Network Functions (VNFs). We deal with the management of virtual computing resources (Unikernels) for the execution of VNFs. This functionality is performed by the Virtual Infrastructure Manager (VIM) in the NFV MANagement and Orchestration (MANO) reference architecture. In this data set we report the results of a performance evaluation we have realized of three open source VIMs, namely OpenStack, Nomad and OpenVIM; both considering stock and the tuned versions. The VIMs and the performance evaluation tools that we employ are provided openly and can be downloaded from our repositories (<a href="https://github.com/superfluidity/openvim4unikernels">https://github.com/superfluidity/openvim4unikernels</a> and <a href="https://github.com/netgroup/vim-tuning-and-eval-tools">https://github.com/netgroup/vim-tuning-and-eval-tools</a>).</p>

The results give insight into the performance of multi-cloud middleware.
