Covenanter Memorial Stone at Tarbolton Church
This Covenanter memorial stone is set up against the wall of Tarbolton Parish Church in Ayrshire. The stone marks the death of William Shillilau who was shot and killed by government forces during the 'Killing Times' (1680-1688) which was a period of conflict in Scottish history between the Presbyterian Covenanter movement, based largely in the south west of the country, and the government forces of Kings Charles II and James VII. Memorial stone, Garvald and Bara Kirk, Scotland
Gravestone at Garvald and Bara Kirk, East Lothian, Scotland. Canmore id 56478: The inscription on this fine mural monument is no longer visible, and only the initials C B remain on a finial. A similar portrait-bust appears at Stenton churchyard, obviously the work of the same stonemason. Captured in a thoughtful pose, the portrait-bust fills the monument's pediment. Obviously a man of means, the young gentleman wears an elegant coat with large cuffs and his flowing hair is neatly curled. The skull he holds is a metaphor for death. The graveyards of Scotland are an important part of the cultural heritage of the country and can provide fascinating information for people interested in family or local history, as well as vernacular art. 184 images using Canon 7D and 10-18mm EF-S zoom lens at 18mm. St Peter's Church,Cambridge; Memorial Stones
These finely decorated memorial stones marked the passing of a generation of the Smith family, notably Thomas Smith esquire, who served Cambridge as a Justice of the Peace and aldermen from 1733 - 1754. These memorials are the best-preserved examples from the church, with others lost in the yard, reused in the pathway or placed against the wall of the church. The exception to this is a small 17th-century heart shaped gravestone and 19th-century chest tomb in the yard. St Peter's Church is thought to have been built in the 12th-century, possibly with Anglo-Saxon origins. Most of the church seen today is Georgian and was heavily reconstructed in 1781 when the Norman nave and chancel were demolished and rebuilt following a long period of ruin. The Georgian reconstruction reused much of the original material, including Roman tiles and bricks that had been robbed from the ruins of Roman Cambridge, including the once-adjacent 4th-century town wall. <p>During fear conditioning, thalamic and cortical af- ferents convey conditioned stimulus (CS) and unconditioned stimulus (US) sensory information into the baso-lateral amyg- dala (BLA), causing a marked potentiation of excitatory syn- apses by long-term synaptic plasticity (LTP). This phenomenon causes indeed an increase of firing activity of a specific class of neurons, called “fear neurons”. Figure legend A) Fear neurons stimulate central amygdala (CeA) (serial processing) causing a strong increase of the whole amygdala output triggering both motor and auto- nomic fear behaviour by involving periaqueductal gray matter (PAG) and hypothalamus. Connection between cortical pre- limbic (PrL) and BLA neurons is able to stimulate the activity of BLA fear neurons causing a further increase in CeA activity. BLA neurons activity is also potentiated by a backward excitatory pathway originating from CeA. CS-US association induces in CeA neurons similar learning-dependent modifications occur- ring in BLA (parallel processing). From BLA, CS-US information is also redirected to Basal Ganglia which support the instru- mental response. B) During the extinction phase, the input from cortical infralimbic (IL) area suppresses the BLA fear neurons activity by the interplay with intrinsic inhibitory interneurons. Moreover, IL area directly inhibits the CeA trough activation of intercalated cells (ITCs), a scattered group of GABAergic neu- rons mainly located around the BLA area. The local inhibitory circuit further reduces the neural activity of fear neurons of BLA neurons and the subsequent BLA-CeA pathway, thereby sup- pressing the fear response.</p>
