<p>This dataset contains data on the review of needs analysis in open schooling. The dataset is composed mainly by the following items:</p> <ul> <li>description of surveyed persons (interviews transcripts; focus groups and written survey with open ending questions)</li> <li>contents of the semi‐structured interview protocol used for conducting both interviews and focus groups. The interview protocols were produced in local languages by partners who did not conduct the interviews in English.</li> <li>summary of the transcripts of interviews with experts in the selected case‐study regions (in English). Interviewees were asked to provide their views and perceptions on OSC network building and open schooling learning projects.</li> <li>summary of the transcripts of focus groups (in English). Each focus group was held in the local language of the beneficiary organising it, recorded with audio equipment and then transcribed. Focus groups were run in Germany, Cyprus, Spain, Slovenia and Sweden.</li> </ul>

Concerning awareness and perceptions of bioeconomy development and biobased products and solutions, the primary challenges and requirements seem to revolve around economic factors, such as the lack of investments and limited access to essential finance. However, other significant determinants also play a role, including the absence of appropriate policy and regulatory frameworks governing the bioeconomy sector and issues pertaining to stakeholder engagement, particularly concerning a lack of relevant awareness.</p>

PHYAFB: A new database of the analysis of the physiological needs in amateur female basketball during official matches

<p>The Physiological Analysis of Female Basketball players (PHYAFB) database is a valuable resource for studying the physiological demands placed on female amateur basketball players during official games. This database includes heart rate data from ten female players aged between 18 and 26 years, which were collected during ten high-stress matches played during a crucial relegation phase. In total, almost 350,000 heart rate samples have been reported. The data is stored in CSV format, facilitating easy access and analysis, and the database comes with Python&nbsp;source code to support initial examination.</p><p>The primary aim of the PHYAFB database is to provide a useful reference for other teams facing similar situations. Furthermore, the database represents a unique and valuable resource for sports scientists, coaches, and trainers seeking to comprehend the physiological demands of female basketball players during official competitions. Through the analysis of heart rate data, coaches and trainers can identify the intensity and duration of physical activity during games, enabling the development of more effective training programs. Additionally, the database can be used to compare the physiological demands placed on male and female basketball players or to investigate the impact of different game strategies on player performance.</p>

Soil ecotoxicology needs robust biomarkers – a meta-analysis approach to test the robustness of gene expression-based biomarkers for measuring chemical exposure effects in soil invertebrates

<p>Gene expression-based biomarkers are&nbsp;regularly proposed&nbsp; as rapid, sensitive and mechanistically informative tools to identify whether&nbsp;soil&nbsp;invertebrates are experiencing adverse effects due&nbsp;to&nbsp;chemical exposure. However, before biomarkers could be deployed within diagnostic studies, systematic evidence of the robustness of such biomarkers to detect effects&nbsp; is needed.&nbsp;Here, we present an approach for conducting a systematic meta-analysis of the robustness of gene expression-based biomarkers in soil invertebrates.</p> <p>The approach was developed and trialled for two measurements of gene expression commonly proposed as biomarkers in soil ecotoxicology: metallothionein (MT) gene expression in earthworms for metals and heat shock protein 70 (HSP70) gene expression in earthworms for organic chemicals. From a systematic analysis of the published literature, we collected 294 unique gene expression data points and used linear mixed-effect models to&nbsp;assess concentration,&nbsp;exposure duration&nbsp;and species effects on the quantified response.</p> <p>This database provided contains gene-expression data from publications that have used gene expression-based biomakers to study effects of chemical pollutants on soil invertebrates. R scripts are provided that were used to study the patterns of gene expression as reported in accompanying publication.&nbsp;</p> <p>We encourage colleagues in the field to apply this approach to other biomarkers, as such quantitative assessment is a prerequisite to ensuring that the suitability and limitations of proposed biomarkers are known and stated.</p>

Data from: Resource-Area-Dependence Analysis: inferring animal resource needs from home-range and mapping data

An animal's home-range can be expected to encompass the resources it requires for surviving or reproducing. Thus, animals inhabiting a heterogeneous landscape, where resource patches vary in size, shape and distribution, will naturally have home-ranges of varied sizes, so that each home-range encompasses a minimum required amount of a resource. Home-range size can be estimated from telemetry data, and often key resources, or proxies for them such as the areas of important habitat types, can be mapped. We propose a new method, Resource-Area-Dependence Analysis (RADA), which uses a sample of tracked animals and a categorical map to i) infer in which map categories important resources are accessible, ii) within which home range cores they are found, and iii) estimate the mean minimum areas of these map categories required for such resource provision. We provide three examples of applying RADA to datasets of radio-tracked animals from southern England: 15 red squirrels Sciurus vulgaris, 17 gray squirrels S. carolinensis and 114 common buzzards Buteo buteo. The analyses showed that each red squirrel required a mean (95% CL) of 0.48 ha (0.24-0.97) of pine wood within the outermost home-range, each gray squirrel needed 0.34 ha (0.11-1.12) ha of mature deciduous woodland and 0.035-0.046 ha of wheat, also within the outermost home-range, while each buzzard required 0.54 ha (0.35-0.82) of rough ground close to the home-range center and 14 ha (11-17) of meadow within an intermediate core, with 52% of them also relying on 0.41 ha (0.29-0.59) of suburban land near the home-range center. RADA thus provides a useful tool to infer key animal resource requirements during studies of animal movement and habitat use.
