<p><strong>Abstract</strong></p> <p>Understanding nest site selection is crucial for species conservation. Bird conservation often involves installing nesting aids to increase nest site availability and induce colonization of unoccupied sites. However, prospecting individuals must find nesting aids, which may be facilitated by social information. Here, we investigated the effectiveness of artificial nests and playback in the declining, migratory House Martin <em>Delichon urbicum</em>. We selected unoccupied sites with artificial nests along a distance gradient to occupied sites and broadcasted conspecific vocalizations during prospection times of House Martins in both the post- and the following pre-breeding periods. Visitation and colonization rates increased considerably in proximity to occupied sites. Playback during the post-breeding and pre-breeding periods enhanced visitation rates, while pre-breeding-only and post-breeding-only playback had smaller positive effects. Colonization rate increased exclusively with pre-breeding-only playback. Colonized playback and non-playback sites had similar breeding success, indicating that playback did not create ecological traps by attracting House Martins to suboptimal sites. Hence, broadcasting conspecific vocalizations informs prospecting birds of nest site availability, thereby increasing visitation, and to some degree, colonization of unoccupied House Martin sites. To boost colonization, we recommend installing artificial House Martin nests within approximately 500 meters of occupied sites and using playback of conspecific vocalizations.</p>

Costless correction of chain based nested sampling parameter estimaion in gravitational wave data and beyond (supplementary material)
<p>These are the nested sampling inference products used to obtain the results for <span><a href="https://arxiv.org/abs/2404.16428">arXiv:2404.16428</a>. The chains are given as pickled dataframes as there are over 1000 runs provided here. The script for reproducing the plots in the paper is also given. </span></p> <p><span>Folders:</span></p> <p><span>outdir_simulated_BBH - contains 200 runs on the same simulated signal. 'samples' contains the full sets of weighted samples from each run and 'full_dfs' contains the dataframes with the weighted samples AND the phantom points from the run. The samples in 'full_dfs' with chain_no=0 are the weighted samples, and all others are phantoms. </span></p> <p><span>outdir_test - contains the single run on the above simulated signal which was performed with num_repeats=25*ndims=100. </span></p> <p><span>outdir_coverage - contains 1000 runs on different simulated signals, with parameters drawn from the prior. Data for: Nest material preferences in wild hazel dormice Muscardinus avellanarius: Testing predictions from optimal foraging theory
<p class="MsoNormal">Obtaining nesting material presents an optimal foraging problem, collection of materials incurs a cost in terms of risk of predation and energy spent, and individuals must balance these costs with the benefits of using that material in the nest. The hazel dormouse, <em>Muscardinus avellanarius</em> is an endangered British mammal in which both sexes build nests. However, whether material used in their construction follows the predictions of optimal foraging theory is unknown. Here, we analyse the use of nesting materials in forty two breeding nests from six locations in Southwest England. Nests were characterised in terms of which plants were used, the relative amount of each plant, and how far away the nearest source was. We find that dormice exhibit a preference for plants closer to the nest, but that the distance they are prepared to travel depends on the plant species. Dormice travelled further to collect honeysuckle <em>Lonicera periclymenum</em>, oak <em>Quercus robur</em>, and beech <em>Fagus sylvatica</em> than any other plants. Distance did not affect the relative amount used, although the proportion of honeysuckle in nests was highest, and more effort was expended collecting honeysuckle, beech, bramble <em>Rubus fruticosus</em> and oak compared to other plants. Our results suggest that not all aspects of optimal foraging theory apply to nest material collection. However, optimal foraging theory is a useful model to examine nest material collection, providing testable predictions. As found previously honeysuckle is important as a nesting material, and should be taken account when assessing suitability of sites for dormice.</p>
Formica exsecta comparison of the bacterial and fungal microbiomes of nest material and the ants
<p>This study explores the microbiome of the ant <em>Formica exsecta,</em> and compares this to the microbiome found in the nest material. We found fundamental differences in both the bacterial and the fungal communities between ants and their nest material, but no significant differences in the bacterial and fungal communities among colonies. Species diversity, species richness, and evenness were all significantly lower for bacteria in ants than in nest material, whereas for fungi only species richness was lower in ants, than in nest material. No such differences were found among ants from diffrent colonies.</p>
