Time series of high-frequency sensor data measuring water temperature, dissolved oxygen, pressure, conductivity, specific conductance, total dissolved solids, chlorophyll a, phycocyanin, fluorescent dissolved organic matter, and turbidity at discrete depths in Falling Creek Reservoir, Virginia, USA in 2018-2025

We monitored water quality in Falling Creek Reservoir (Vinton, Virginia, USA; 37.30325 -79.8373) with high-frequency (10-minute) sensors in 2018-2025. All variables were measured at the deepest site of the reservoir adjacent to the dam. Falling Creek Reservoir is owned and managed by the Western Virginia Water Authority as a primary drinking water source for Roanoke, Virginia. This data product consists of one dataset compiled of depth profiles of water temperature on 1-m intervals from 0.1 to 9 m depth; dissolved oxygen at 5 m and 9 m depth; pressure at 9 m depth; and temperature, dissolved oxygen, conductivity, specific conductance, chlorophyll a, phycocyanin, total dissolved solids, fluorescent dissolved organic matter, turbidity, and pressure at ~1.6 m depth. The dataset is accompanied by a sensor maintenance log and quality assurance/quality control analysis scripts.

Monthly vertical profiles of salinity, temperature, pressure, oxygen and photosynthetically-available radiation in Sapelo River, Doboy Sound, Duplin River and Altamaha River transect surveys from April 2008 to April 2015

Monthly hydrographic surveys were performed along the Sapelo River, Doboy Sound, Duplin River and Altamaha River from April 2008 to April 2015. Vertical CTD profiles were collected from the surface to bottom during low and high tide phases at fixed stations chosen to coincide with long-term GCE-LTER moorings. Conductivity, temperature, pressure, photosynthetically-available radiation (PAR) and oxygen concentration were measured at 8 Hz using a SeaBird Electronics SBE-37 instrument, and depth, salinity and sigma-t and oxygen saturation were calculated using UNESCO algorithms. Data values collected during the upcast were deleted. This data set was collected as part of the Georgia Coastal Ecosystems LTER monthly hydrographic monitoring program, and will be updated approximately annually to include the latest observations.

Groundwater well pressure, temperature, conductance, salinity and oxygen measurements for GCE-LTER study hammock HN_i_1 from 30-Oct-2008 to 03-Dec-2013

Groundwater pressure, temperature and other parameters (e.g. conductance, salinity, oxygen and pH) were measured using various instruments installed in PVC wells at the GCE-LTER HN_i_1 holocene study hammock from 30-Oct-2008 to 03-Dec-2013. Observations were logged continuously at 15 minute intervals, and accumulated data were downloaded from loggers using manufacturer-provided communications software semi-monthly, then imported into MATLAB for post-processing, quality control and documention. Raw, unvented pressure readings were corrected for atmospheric pressure and sensor height from the bottom of the well to generate corrected pressure readings. Separate data tables are provided for each combination of instrument and well due to differences in parameters measured and post-processing steps, but all tables include detailed information on location and well characteristics to support integration and analysis. These data were collected as part of the Georgia Coastal Ecosystems LTER Intensive Hammock Characterization and Hammock Groundwater Modeling projects, and will be used for groundwater modeling studies at two marsh hammocks on Sapelo Island, Georgia.

The rate or speed at which the reactants combine is high, in part because of the nature of the chemical reaction itself and in part because more energy is generated than can escape into the surrounding medium, with the result that the temperature of the reactants is raised to accelerate the reaction even more. Combustion encompasses a great variety of phenomena with wide application in industry, the sciences, professions, and the home, and the application is based on knowledge of physics, chemistry, and mechanics; their interrelationship becomes particularly evident in treating flame propagation. In general terms, combustion is one of the most important of chemical reactions and may be considered a culminating step in the oxidation of certain kinds of substances. Though oxidation was once considered to be simply the combination of oxygen with any compound or element, the meaning of the word has been expanded to include any reaction in which atoms lose electrons, thereby becoming oxidized. In addition to chemical reactions, physical processes that transfer mass and energy by diffusion or convection occur in gaseous combustion. In the absence of external forces, the rate of component diffusion depends upon the concentration of the constituents, pressure, and temperature changes, and on diffusion coefficients. The latter are either measured or calculated in terms of the kinetic theory of gases. The process of diffusion is of great importance in combustion reactions, in flames, that is, in gaseous mixtures, and in solids or liquids. Diffusion heat transfer follows a law stating that the heat flux is proportional to the temperature gradient.
