Diet composition for small pelagic fishes across the Northeast U.S. Continental Shelf for NES-LTER, ongoing since 2013

These data represent the diet composition of small pelagic fishes assessed by the Northeast U.S. Shelf Long-Term Ecological Research (NES-LTER) project. The six species of fish in this dataset represent a subset of the species collected in bottom trawls conducted by the NOAA Fisheries Northeast Ecosystems Surveys from Cape Hatteras to the Gulf of Maine. Sampling occurred in the Spring and Fall seasons. Fish were frozen and stomach content analyses were conducted by the Fisheries Oceanography and Larval Fish Ecology Lab at the Woods Hole Oceanographic Institution. Data are counts and length measurements for prey items examined under a dissecting microscope. Prey species were matched to the lowest taxonomic level in the Integrated Taxonomic Information System (ITIS) for scientific name and taxonomic serial number. The dataset was supplemented with geospatial and temporal information from NOAA Fisheries trawl databases.

At sea,&nbsp;moderate sounds can potentially be used to deter fish to prevent injury or death due to acoustic overexposure. In&nbsp;sound exposure studies, acoustic features can be compared to improve deterrence efficacy. In this study, we played&nbsp;200&ndash;1600 Hz pulse trains from a drifting vessel and investigated changes in pelagic fish abundance and behavior by&nbsp;utilizing echosounders and hydrophones mounted to a transect of bottom-moored frames. We monitored fish presence and tracked individual fish. This revealed no changes in fish abundance or behavior, including swimming speed&nbsp;and direction of individuals, in response to the sound exposure. We did find significant changes in swimming depth&nbsp;of individually tracked fish, but this could not be linked to the sound exposures. Overall, the results clearly show that&nbsp;pelagic fish did not flee from the current sound exposures, and we found no clear changes in behavior due to the&nbsp;sound exposure. We cannot rule out that different sounds at higher levels elicit a deterrence response; however, it&nbsp;may be that pelagic fish are just more likely to respond to sound with (short-lasting) changes in school formation.</p> <p>&nbsp;</p> <p>&nbsp;</p>

Interagency Ecological Program: Summer Townet Survey for Young Pelagic Fishes in the San Francisco Estuary

The Interagency Ecological Program’s (IEP) Summer Townet Survey (STN) is a long-term effort to monitor the annual recruitment success of young pelagic fishes in the upper San Francisco Estuary (California, United States). Conducted by the California Department of Fish and Wildlife (CDFW) since 1959, STN has sampled fixed locations from Eastern San Pablo Bay to Rio Vista on the Sacramento River, and to Stockton on the San Joaquin River; and a single station in the lower Napa River. The study area was expanded in 2011 to include the Sacramento Deep Water Ship Channel (SDWSC) and Cache Slough (CS). Currently, 40 stations are sampled as a “survey” every other week June through August for 6 surveys. A conical net, lashed to a fixed metal “D” frame, is pulled obliquely through the water column 2 to 3 times at each station. All fish and macro-invertebrates are identified and enumerated from each tow, with fork lengths (mm) of the first 50 of each fish species also recorded. Fish catch, length-frequency, and catch-per-unit-effort (CPUE) among stations is available with data visualization tools on the study website for all species (https://wildlife.ca.gov/Conservation/Delta/Townet-Survey). Data collected at historic 31 stations are used to calculate annual relative abundance indices for age-0 Striped Bass (Morone saxatilis) and Delta Smelt (Hypomesus transpacificus). The remaining 9 stations are sampled to expand our sampling range further upriver and increase our understanding of larval and juvenile fish abundance and distribution in the lower Napa River and the North Delta. A meso-zooplankton net targeting copepods and cladocerans is also used in parallel to assess fish food resources at each station and a subset of the fish collected are retained for diet analysis by CDFW researchers (beginning 2005, see STN and FMWT zooplankton data on EDI). Stable Isotope Data for Small Pelagic Fishes across the Northeast U.S. Continental Shelf from 2013-2015

These data represent the carbon and nitrogen stable isotope signatures of small pelagic fishes across the Northeast U.S. Continental Shelf as reported by Suca, J.J., et al. (2018) Feeding dynamics of Northwest Atlantic small pelagic fishes. Progress in Oceanography, 165, 52-62, https://doi.org/10.1016/j.pocean.2018.04.014. The five species of fish in this dataset represent a subset of the species collected in bottom trawls conducted by the NOAA NEFSC Ecosystems Survey Branch from Cape Hatteras to the Gulf of Maine for years 2013-2015. Sampling occurred in the Spring and Fall seasons. Sections of dorsal musculature were analyzed for carbon and nitrogen isotopes using mass spectrometry. Carbon-to-nitrogen isotopic ratios were reported along with the isotopic signatures for carbon and nitrogen respectively. Additionally, a lipid-corrected carbon signature was calculated for the fish muscle tissue. The dataset was supplemented with geospatial and temporal information from NOAA Fisheries trawl databases.

Niche partitioning between planktivorous fish in the pelagic Baltic Sea assessed by DNA metabarcoding, qPCR and microscopy: Data and Analyses

<p class="MsoNormal"><span>Marine communities undergo rapid changes because of human-induced ecosystem pressures. The Baltic Sea pelagic food web has experienced several regime shifts during the past century, resulting in a system where competition between planktivorous mesopredators is assumed to be high. While the two clupeids sprat and herring reveal signs of competition, the stickleback population has increased drastically during the past decades. Here, we investigate diet overlap between the three dominating planktivorous fish in the Baltic Sea, utilizing DNA metabarcoding on the <em>18S rRNA</em> gene and the <em>COI </em>gene, targeted qPCR, and microscopy. Our results show niche differentiation between clupeids and stickleback and that rotifers play an important function in niche partitioning of stickleback, as a resource that is not being used, neither by the clupeids nor by other zooplankton. <span>We further show that all the diet assessment methods used in this study are consistent but DNA metabarcoding describes the plankton-fish link at the highest taxonomic resolution. </span>This study suggests that rotifers and other understudied soft-bodied prey may have an important function in the pelagic food web and that the growing population of pelagic stickleback is supported by the unutilized feeding niche offered by the rotifers.</span></p>

Data from: Empirical verification of feeding selectivity of larval and juvenile pelagic fishes using in situ zooplankton communities

<p>Most studies on the feeding ecology of larvae and juveniles of commercially important pelagic fishes have used field-based approaches. However, due to possible biases related to net sampling, it is uncertain whether the results obtained from those studies truly represent the situation of live fish in the sea. Here we investigated the feeding ecology of pelagic fishes through a laboratory experiment minimizing the biases inherent in field net sampling. In the experiment, hatchery-reared juvenile chub mackerel (<em>Scomber japonicus</em>) and larval/juvenile Japanese anchovy <em>(Engraulis japonicus</em>) were fed with wild-caught zooplankton assemblages collected from around Hakatajima Island in the Seto Inland Sea, Japan. The relationships between fish size and prey number in the gut, and the selectivity on each prey organism were determined. As a result, in both species, prey number and size increased with body size, and the fish showed strong selectivity for crustaceans including copepodites and adults of copepods. Our data has also clearly indicated that both species can selectively prey on preferred foods that are rare while avoiding non-preferred foods that are abundant. These results, which substantially accord with reports from previous field studies, will not only help field scientists make a convincing interpretation of their data, but also open the possibility of further laboratory studies on detailed mechanisms of the feeding selectivity of larval/juvenile pelagic fishes.</p>
