Data from: Why do bugs perish? range size and local vulnerability traits as surrogates of Odonata extinction risk
<p>Despite claims of an insect decline worldwide, our understanding of extinction risk in insects is incomplete. Using bionomic data of all odonate (603 dragonflies and damselflies) North American species, we assessed: a) regional extinction risk and whether this is related to local extirpation; b) whether these two patterns are similar altitudinally and latitudinally; and, c) areas of conservation concern. We used geographic range size as a predictor of regional extinction risk and body size, thermal limits and habitat association as predictors of local extirpation. We found that: a) greater regional extinction risk is related to narrow thermal limits, lotic habitat use and large body size (this in damselflies but not dragonflies); b) southern species are more climate-tolerant but with limited geographic range size than northern species; and, c) two priority areas for odonate conservation are the cold-temperate to sub-boreal Northeast USA and the Transversal Neo-Volcanic System. Our approach can be used to estimate insect extinction risk as it compensates for the lack of abundance data. </p>
Data for: Perishing rich, expanding poor: Demography and population genetic patterns in two congeneric butterflies
<p><span>In human-altered landscapes, specialist butterflies typically form spatially restricted populations, genetically differentiated due to dispersal restrictions. Generalists, in contrast, display minimum differentiation but high genetic diversity. While local-level actions suffice to conserve specialists and landscape-level actions are necessary for generalists, minimum information exists regarding conservation of species with intermediate features. We targeted two congeneric butterflies, the recently re-expanding <em>Argynnis adippe</em> and the strongly declining <em>A. niobe</em>, co-occurring in the pastoral landscape of the Carpathian Mountains, Czech Republic. We integrated species distribution models, mark-recapture, and microsatellite analysis to compare their habitat requirements, adult demography, dispersal, and genetic patterns, and expanded the genetic analysis across the Carpathian Arc and beyond to delimit spatial conservation units. In two mountain valleys, both species formed interconnected populations numbering thousands of individuals. Mobility patterns suggested the populations' interconnection across the Czech Carpathians. Genetic diversity was extremely poor in the non-threatened <em>A. adippe</em> and moderate in the declining <em>A. niobe</em>. No population differentiation was detected within the Czech Carpathians <span>(<span>ca 1500 km<sup>2</sup></span>). </span>Low genetic diversity and no differentiation was preserved in <em>A. adippe</em> across East Central Europe, whereas in <em>A. niobe</em>, populations from Serbia were differentiated from the Carpathian Arc + Alps. The high adult mobility linked to low differentiation probably reflect the distribution of larval resources, historically widespread but sparse and currently declining for <em>A. niobe</em> (grazing-disturbed grounds), while currently increasing for <em>A. adippe</em> (abandonment scrub, disturbed woodlands). Units as large as entire mountain systems define population boundaries, and hence conservation management units, for both species. </span></p>

Data from: Seed perishability determines the caching behaviour of a food-hoarding bird
1. Many animals hoard seeds for later consumption and establish seed caches that are often located at sites with specific environmental characteristics. One explanation for the selection of non-random caching locations is the avoidance of pilferage by other animals. Another possible hypothesis is that animals choose locations that hamper the perishability of stored food, allowing the consumption of unspoiled food items over long time periods. 2. We examined seed perishability and pilferage-avoidance as potential drivers for caching behaviour of Spotted nutcrackers (Nucifraga caryocatactes) in the Swiss Alps where the birds are specialized on caching seeds of Swiss stone pine (Pinus cembra). 3. We used seedling establishment as an inverse measure of seed perishability, as established seedlings cannot longer be consumed by nutcrackers. We recorded the environmental conditions (i.e., canopy openness and soil moisture) of seed caching, seedling establishment and pilferage sites. 4. Our results show that sites of seed caching and seedling establishment had opposed micro-environmental conditions. Canopy openness and soil moisture were negatively related to seed caching but positively related to seedling establishment, i.e., nutcrackers cached seeds preferentially at sites where seed perishability was low. We found no effects of environmental factors on cache pilferage, i.e. neither canopy openness nor soil moisture had significant effects on pilferage rates. We thus could not relate caching behaviour to pilferage-avoidance. 5. Our study highlights the importance of seed perishability as a mechanism for seed caching behaviour, which should be considered in future studies. Our findings could have important implications for the regeneration of plants whose seeds are dispersed by seed-caching animals, as the potential of seedlings to establish may strongly decrease if animals cache seeds at sites that favour seed perishability rather than seedling establishment.
Supplementary data: Optimising centralisation and decentralisation in distribution networks for perishable products through mathematical modelling, parametric analysis, and machine learning
<p><span>The success of distribution companies for perishable products is enabled by optimally configuring distribution networks, which allows for reducing total logistic costs while ensuring reduced product spoilage and high service levels. Since customer demand for perishable products varies over time, the network configuration should not be optimised once, but periodically reviewed. Among the decisions to be reviewed, determining whether to centralise or decentralise inventory (i.e., stock allocation in distribution centres) is crucial. However, the literature overlooks stock allocation decisions, and existing methodologies to compare the economic performance of centralised, decentralised, and hybrid policies neglect important cost items, also requiring advanced computational technologies and skills to be applied. This paper addresses these gaps by providing two contributions. In this dataset, a comparison has been made between the cost performance of centralized, decentralized, and hybrid stock allocation policies in distribution networks for perishable products. The dataset comprises 100,000 realistic case studies generated through a Sobol quasi-random low discrepancy series.</span></p>
Service Level Anchoring in Demand Forecasting: The Moderating Impact of Retail Promotions and Product Perishability
<p>This dataset is used for the working paper "Service Level Anchoring in Demand Forecasting: The Moderating Impact of Retail Promotions and Product Perishability," authored by Fahimnia, Tan, and Tahirov. The data was collected during a laboratory experiment designed based on data from a real case in the fast-moving consumer goods (FMCG) industry. Each subject was assigned to one of the following treatment groups:</p> <ul> <li>T1 - forecasts were made for a nonperishable product (shelf life of 9 months), with no service level information.</li> <li>T2 - forecasts were made for a perishable product (shelf life 1 day), with no service level information.</li> <li>T3 - forecasts were made for a nonperishable product, with a high service level information.</li> <li>T4 - the forecasts were still for a nonperishable product, with a lower service level information.</li> <li>T5 - forecasts were made for a perishable product, with high service level information.</li> <li>T6 - forecasts were made for a perishable product, with low service level information.</li> </ul> <p>A total of 368 subjects prepared four forecasts each. For each forecast, a subject was provided with 30 weeks of sales data, including both normal and promotional weeks. The promotional weeks were highlighted as "Promo." The subjects were asked to provide their forecasts for week 31, basing their forecasts solely on historical data and potential sales promotions. Mean absolute percentage error (MAPE) was used to assess the accuracy of the forecasts. Percentage forecast bias was used to measure the deviation of adjusted forecasts from the normative benchmark forecast.</p> <p>The dataset includes four Excel files, two code script files, and a README file:<br><strong>1. Excel files 1 and 2:</strong><br><strong> "database_analysis.xlsx"</strong>: Contains average adjusted forecasts for each subject during both promotional and non-promotional periods, along with demographic information, calculated MAPE, forecast bias, service level, and product perishability. This file is used as input data in the "data_cleaning.R" script.<br><strong>"database_plot.xlsx"</strong>: This Excel file contains a compact and cleaned version of the data from the first file, excluding outliers, and was used to create visuals such as boxplots.<br><strong>2. Excel Files 3 and 4:</strong><br><strong>"Pool_1_Perishable.xlsx" </strong>and "<strong>Pool_2_Non_Perishable.xlsx"</strong>: Contain real datasets for perishable and non-perishable products used in the experiment.<br><strong>3. Code Script File:</strong><br><strong>"data_cleaning.R"</strong>: This script performs data pre-processing by cleaning and transforming the dataset.<br><strong>"analysis.R"</strong>: This script loads the cleaned data and performs statistical analysis, including ANOVA and hypothesis testing. </p>

Base de datos de impacto científico y académico de la bioacústica en Costa Rica utilizando el software Publish or Perish y la plataforma de Google Scholar
<p>La bioacústica ha permitido ampliar las formas de comprender la dinámica de los ecosistemas y las especies mediante el uso de archivos de sonido los cuales son considerados un espécimen acústico. En Costa Rica dada su alta biodiversidad, los sonidos forman parte importante de la comunicación en muchas especies silvestres y la producción científica referente al tema de bioacústica se encuentra en aumento. El objetivo de la investigación fue analizar el impacto de la bioacústica desde la perspectiva de la producción científica y académica durante los últimos 50 años y destacar la importancia de los sonidos en la conservación de especies y sus hábitats en Costa Rica. Se registraron un total de 1849 documentos representados por artículos científicos y libros publicados en revistas indexadas y editoriales en el campo de biología, ecología, conservación, cambio climático, entre otras. A pesar del aumento en las investigaciones biológicas en Costa Rica, los vacíos de información en ecosistemas naturales y alterados siguen siendo importantes y en este contexto, la bioacústica podría tomar un papel preponderante en la investigación en el país ya que combinada con otras disciplinas puede dar respuesta a interrogantes previas o nuevas preguntas de investigación en diversos campos.</p>
