Extensive crowdsourced dataset of in-situ evaluated binaural soundscapes of private dwellings containing subjective sound-related and situational ratings along with person factors to study time-varying influences on sound perception — research data
<p><strong>Abstract:</strong></p> <p>The soundscape approach highlights the role of situational factors in sound evaluations; however, only a few studies have applied a multi‐domain approach including sound‐related, person‐related, and time‐varying situational variables. Therefore, we conducted a study based on the Experience Sampling Method to measure the relative contribution of a broad range of potentially relevant acoustic and non‐auditory variables in predicting indoor soundscape evaluations. Here we present the comprehensive dataset for which 105 participants reported temporally (rather) stable trait variables such as noise sensitivity, trait affect, and quality of life. They rated 6.594 situations regarding the soundscape standard dimensions, perceived loudness, and the saliency of its sound components and evaluated situational variables such as state affect, perceived control, activity, and location. To complement these subject‐centered data, we additionally crowdsourced object‐centered data by having participants make binaural measurements of each indoor soundscape at their homes using a low‐(self‐)noise recorder. These recordings were used to compute (psycho‐)acoustical indices such as the energetically averaged loudness level, the A‐weighted energetically averaged equivalent continuous sound pressure level, and the A‐weighted five‐percent exceedance level. An investigation into the knowledge, perceptions and role of personal protective technologies in Zika prevention in Colombia
<p>To gain an insight into the knowledge and concerns of pregnant women surrounding Zika and their opinions regarding personal protective technologies, particularly repellent clothing, a focus group study was carried out with pregnant women, women of reproductive age, and semi-structured interviews with their male partners in two cities in Colombia. The qualitative data files made available here are the transcripts for the manuscript developed from this research. </p>

Data from: Long-term use benefits of personal frequency-modulated systems for speech in noise perception in patients with stroke with auditory processing deficits: a non-randomised controlled trial study
Objectives: Approximately one in five stroke survivors suffer from difficulties with speech reception in noise, despite normal audiometry. These deficits are treatable with personal Frequency Modulated systems (FMs). This study aimed to evaluate long term benefits in speech reception in noise, after daily 10 week use of personal FMs, in non-aphasic stroke patients with auditory processing deficits. Design: This was a prospective non randomised controlled trial study. Patients were allocated to an intervention care group or standard care subjects group according to their willingness to use the intervention or not. Setting: Tertiary care setting. Participants: Nine non-aphasic subjects with ischemic stroke, normal/near normal audiometry, and auditory processing deficits and with reported difficulties understanding speech in background noise were recruited in the subacute stroke stage (3-12 months after stroke). Interventions: Four patients (intervention care subjects) used the FMs in their daily life over 10 weeks. Five patients (standard care subjects) received standard care. Primary outcome measures: All subjects were tested at baseline (visit 1) and 10 weeks later (visit 2) on a sentences in noise test with the FMs (aided) and without the FMs (unaided). Results: Speech reception thresholds showed clinically and statistically significant improvements in intervention but not in standard care subjects at 10 weeks in both aided and unaided conditions. Conclusions: 10 week use of FM systems by adult stroke patients may lead to benefits in unaided speech in noise perception. Our findings may indicate auditory plasticity type changes and require further investigation.

Early Brain Damage Affects Body Schema and Person Perception Abilities in Children and Adolescents with Spastic Diplegia
<p>Raw data from the Journal article: Early Brain Damage Affects Body Schema and Person Perception Abilities in Children and Adolescents with Spastic Diplegia</p> <p>Early brain damage leading to cerebral palsy is associated to core motor impairments and also affects cognitive and social abilities.<br> In particular, previous studies have documented specific alterations of perceptual body processing and motor cognition that are<br> associated to unilateral motor deficits in hemiplegic patients. However, little is known about spastic diplegia (SpD), which is<br> characterized by motorial deficits involving both sides of the body and is often associated to visuospatial, attentional, and<br> social perception impairments. Here, we compared the performance of a sample of 30 children and adolescents with SpD<br> (aged 7-18 years) and of a group of age-matched controls with typical development (TD) at two different tasks tapping on<br> body representations. In the first task, we tested visual and motor imagery abilities as assessed, respectively, by the object-based<br> mental rotation of letters and by the first-person transformations for whole-body stimuli. In the second task, we administered<br> an inversion effect/composite illusion task to evaluate the use of configural/holistic processing of others’ body. Additionally, we<br> assessed social perception abilities in the SpD sample using the NEPSY-II battery. In line with previously reported visuospatial<br> deficits, a general mental imagery impairment was found in SpD patients when they were engaged in both object-centered and<br> first-person mental transformations. Nevertheless, a specific deficit in operating an own-body transformation emerged. As<br> concerns body perception, while more basic configural processing (i.e., inversion effect) was spared, no evidence for holistic<br> (i.e., composite illusion) body processing was found in the SpD group. NEPSY-II assessment revealed that SpD children<br> were impaired in both the theory of mind and affect recognition subtests. Overall, these findings suggested that early brain<br> lesions and biased embodied experience could affect higher-level motor cognition and perceptual body processing, thus<br> pointing to a strict link between motor deficits, body schema alterations, and person processing difficulties.</p>
