Ab initio electronic stopping power for protons in Ga0.5In0.5P/GaAs/Ge triple-junction solar cells for space applications

Motivated by the radiation damage of solar panels in space, firstly, the results of Monte Carlo particle transport simulations are presented for proton impact on triple-junction Ga0.5In0.5P/GaAs/Ge solar cells, showing the proton projectile penetration in the cells as a function of energy. It is followed by a systematic ab initio investigation of the electronic stopping power for protons in different layers of the cell at the relevant velocities via real-time time-dependent density functional theory (RT-TDDFT) calculations. The electronic stopping power is found to depend significantly on different channeling conditions, which should affect the low velocity damage predictions, and which are understood in terms of impact parameter and electron density along the path. Additionally, we explore the effect of the interface between the layers of the multilayer structure on the energy loss of a proton, along with the effect of strain in the lattice-matched solar cell. Both effects are found to be small compared with the main bulk effect. The interface energy loss has been found to increase with decreasing proton velocity, and in one case, there is an effective interface energy gain.

Development of a Low Mass, Low Power Deformable Mirror with Integrated Drive Electronics Project

&lt;p&gt; &amp;quot;Deformable mirrors (DM) are key to achieving high contrast for any mission to image expolanets. Currently Northrup Grumman Xinetics is the only viable source for high-contrast capable deformable mirrors. This proposal will help to develop a deformable mirror with integrated driver electronics, eliminating traditional bulky external driver electronics and the associated cabling. The DM will have reduced mass and volume and will consume less power than traditional DMs. In addition to the reduced mass and volume, the approach incorporates a number of innovations to improve overall DM performance. The actuator uses single crystal giant-piezos offering up to 10 times the energy density of conventional ceramics, and a force-focused and cantilevered configuration to maximize the transducers energy efficiency in generating mirror motions. In addition, it utilizes a bulk micromachining process for DM fabrication in order to create a single crystal architecture at low cost and with a high optical quality surface figure. When fully developed, the DMs are expected to have large stroke (8-um), low-voltage (~40V), low weight, fast rise time (10 microseconds) and low manufacturing cost. Our price/performance goal is 10,000 actuators with a 10 kHz framing rate for $40k. The technology is scalable from hundreds of actuators to millions of actuators. Microscale delivered a first generation DM to JPL under an SBIR grant in early March 2011. This first generation DM driver was delivered with a simple Microchip-based serial interface from the ASIC to a control computer, and detailed documentation on the ASIC interface protocol. JPL will develop an FPGA high-speed ASIC/computer interface, one capable of operating the DM at its full frame rate. Once the high-speed DM driver is complete, JPL will characterize the delivered 32x32 DM in the lab. Prognostics of Power Electronics, methods and validation testbeds

An overview of the current results of prognostics for DC- DC power converters is presented, focusing on the output filter capacitor component. The electrolytic capacitor used typically as fileter capacitor is one of the components of the power supply with higher failure rate, hence the effort in devel- oping component level prognostics methods for capacitors. An overview of prognostics algorithms based on electrical overstress and thermal overstress accelerated aging data is presented and a discussion on the current efforts in terms of validation of the algorithms is included. The focus of current and future work is to develop a methodology that allows for algoritm development using accelerated aging data and then transform that to a valid algorithm on the real usage time scale.

Accelerated Aging Platform for Prognostics of Power Electronics

To advance the field of electronics prognostics, the study of transistor fault modes and their precursors is essential. This paper reports on a platform for the aging, characterization, and scenario simulation of gate controlled power transistors. The platform supports thermal cycling, dielectric over-voltage, acute/chronic thermal stress, current overstress and application specific scenario simulation. In addition, the platform supports in- situ transistor state monitoring, including measurements of the steady-state voltages and currents, measurements of electrical transient response, measurement of thermal transients, and extrapolated semiconductor impedances, all conducted at varying gate and drain voltage levels. The aging and characterization platform consists of an acquisition and aging hardware system, an agile software architecture for experiment control and a collection of industry developed test equipment.
