Data for: From pattern to process? Dual travelling waves, with contrasting propagation speeds, best describe a self-organised spatio-temporal pattern in population growth of a cyclic rodent
<p>Centroid data used for the analysis in Roos et al. Eco Lett.</p> <p>Transects, up to 99 m in length (dependent on the field's length), were surveyed in linear stable landscape features (field, track or ditch margins) to estimate vole abundance from November 2011 until September 2017. Each transect was divided into 3 m sections (33 in total) and the presence or absence of one or more signs of vole activity (i.e., latrines by burrows, fresh vegetation clippings, and recent burrow excavations) in each section was noted. The proportion of sections with signs of vole presence per transect was then used as the abundance index. The number of surveys carried out at any time varied adaptively with the perceived risk of an outbreak (according to changes in estimated abundance in previous monitoring surveys).</p> <p>The response variable typically used in all models is proportional growth rate (r_{t,i}, where is the abundance index for site at time (Royama 1992; Berryman 2002). A benefit of using r_{t,i}, rather than ln(N_{t,i}), is that any multiplicative effects of site quality are cancelled out, provided they are constant over time. To calculate r_{t,i}, vole abundance indices are required at the same location in successive time periods (i.e., N_{t,i} and N_{t+1,i}). Given that exact transect locations were rarely reused in successive months, and all transect measurements took place throughout the year rather than discrete seasons, the data had to be aggregated to consistent locations and times to allow growth rate to be calculated. As such, transects were temporally aggregated into a respective yearly quarter (e.g., January to March 2014). Transects were spatially aggregated by sequentially selecting an unassigned transect as a reference point for the ith centroid and assigning all unassigned transects within a 5 km radius to the ith centroid, and repeating until all transects had been allocated (see Figure 2 for a summary of the number of transects assigned to each centroid, centroid locations, and time series of growth rate of each centroid). Once complete, the mean Julian day, X and Y UTM (Universal Transverse Mercator) and the mean index was calculated for all transects assigned to each centroid for each time period. Where a centroid had successive values of N_{t,i} and N_{t+1,i} available, the corresponding proportional growth rate was calculated.</p> <p>A constant of 3.03 was added to N_{t,i} to avoid zero entries (3.03 was the lowest non-zero value of <em>N</em> observed). The final dataset consisted of 3,751 observations.</p>
Auditory speed processing in sighted and blind individuals

<p>The penetration and the perforation process of configuration 2 is recorded using HSC 2. It is shown that at the moment of impact, the FSP causes a localized bulge at the rear side of the plate. A localized shearing of material, induced by the FSP front surface, is created in the contact zone. Immediately after, the FSP penetrates and a circular plug is punched through the plate, leaving a clean cut hole. Subsequently, the punched plug can be seen attached to the front surface of the projectile. After that, the punched plug is separated from the FSP.</p>

Older adults experience cognitive deficits that can lead to driving errors and a loss of mobility. Fortunately, some of these deficits can be ameliorated with targeted interventions which improve the speed and accuracy of simultaneous attention to a central and a peripheral stimulus called Speed of Processing training. To date, the mechanisms behind this effective training are unknown. We hypothesized that one potential mechanism underlying this training is a change in distribution of eye movements of different amplitudes. Microsaccades are small amplitude eye movements made when fixating on a stimulus, and are thought to counteract the "visual fading" that occurs when static stimuli are presented. Due to retinal anatomy, larger microsaccadic eye movements are needed to move a peripheral stimulus between receptive fields and counteract visual fading. Alternatively, larger microsaccades may decrease performance due to neural suppression. Because larger microsaccades could aid or hinder peripheral vision, we examine the distribution of microsaccades during stimulus presentation. Our results indicate that there is no statistically significant change in the proportion of large amplitude microsaccades during a Useful Field of View-like task after training in a small sample of older adults. Speed of Processing training does not appear to result in changes in microsaccade amplitude, suggesting that the mechanism underlying Speed of Processing training is unlikely to rely on microsaccades.

Data from: Effect of dalfampridine on information processing speed impairment in multiple sclerosis
Objective: To test a possible benefit of dalfampridine on information processing speed (IPS), a key function for cognitive impairment (CogIm) in multiple sclerosis (MS). Methods: In this randomized, double-blind, placebo-controlled trial, we included patients with a score on the Symbol Digit Modalities Test (SDMT) under the 10th percentile of the reference value. Patients were randomized in a 2:1 ratio to receive dalfampridine 10 mg or placebo twice daily for 12 weeks. They underwent a comprehensive neuropsychological evaluation at screening (T0), at the end of treatment (T1), and after a 4-week follow-up (T2). The primary endpoint was improvement in SDMT. Results: Out of 208 patients screened, 120 were randomized to receive either dalfampridine (n = 80) or placebo (n = 40). At T1, the dalfampridine group presented an increase of SDMT scores vs placebo group (mean change 9.9 [95% confidence interval (CI) 8.5–11.4] vs 5.2 [95% CI 2.8–7.6], p = 0.0018; d = 0.60 for raw score; and 0.8 [95% CI 0.6–1] vs 0.3 [95% CI 0.0–0.5], p = 0.0013; d = 0.61 for z scores; by linear mixed model with robust standard error). The improvement was not sustained at T2. A beneficial effect of dalfampridine was observed in the Paced Auditory Serial Addition Test and in cognitive fatigue. Conclusion: Dalfampridine could be considered as an effective treatment option for IPS impairment in MS. Trial registration: 2013-002558-64 EU Clinical Trials Register. Classification of evidence: This study provides Class I evidence that for patients with MS with low scores on the SDMT, dalfampridine improves IPS.

Data from: A robust and representative lower bound on object processing speed in humans
How early does the brain decode object categories? Addressing this question is critical to constrain the type of neuronal architecture supporting object categorization. In this context, much effort has been devoted to estimating face processing speed. With onsets estimated from 50 to 150 ms, the timing of the first face-sensitive responses in humans remains controversial. This controversy is due partially to the susceptibility of dynamic brain measurements to filtering distortions and analysis issues. Here, using distributions of single-trial event-related potentials (ERPs), causal filtering, statistical analyses at all electrodes and time points, and effective correction for multiple comparisons, we present evidence that the earliest categorical differences start around 90 ms following stimulus presentation. These results were obtained from a representative group of 120 participants, aged 18-81, who categorized images of faces and noise textures. The results were reliable across testing days, as determined by test-retest assessment in 74 of the participants. Furthermore, a control experiment showed similar ERP onsets for contrasts involving images of houses or white noise. Face onsets did not change with age, suggesting that face sensitivity occurs within 100 ms across the adult lifespan. Finally, the simplicity of the face-texture contrast, and the dominant midline distribution of the effects, suggest the face responses were evoked by relatively simple image properties and are not face specific. Our results provide a new lower benchmark for the earliest neuronal responses to complex objects in the human visual system.
