2020 Stakeholder Survey of the Intergovernmental Platform on Biodiversity and Ecosystem Services (IPBES) - Quantitative Dataset

<p>This dataset is the outcome of a survey of IPBES stakeholders that was conducted in May-June 2020. The aim of this survey is to better understand stakeholder engagement with IPBES, to improve implementation of the IPBES stakeholder engagement strategy (decision IPBES-3/4 presented in document IPBES/3/18), and to further increase the inclusivity and effectiveness of the IPBES work programme. Results will help, among others, to better align communication and outreach, and to strengthen collaborative processes within the IPBES work programme.</p> <p><br> This dataset presents only the quantitative data of the complete dataset of responses. It has been anonymised and all personal comments in response to open questions have been removed. Dataset: Multi-level network dataset of social-ecological interdependencies in ten Swiss wetlands based on qualitative interviews and quantitative surveys

<p>The dataset originated from quantitative online surveys and qualitative expert interviews with organizational actors relevant to the governance of ten Swiss wetlands from 2019 till 2021. Multi-level networks represent the wetlands governance for each of the ten cases. The collaboration networks of actors form the first level of the multi-level networks and are connected to multiple other network levels that account for the social and ecological systems those actors are active in. 521 actors relevant to the management of the ten wetlands are included in the collaboration networks; quantitative survey data exists for 71% of them. A unique feature of the collaboration networks is that it differentiates between positive and negative forms of collaboration specified based on actors&#39; activity areas. Therefore, the data describes not only if actors collaborate but also how and where actors collaborate. Further additional two-mode networks (actor participation in forums and involvement in other regions outside the case area) are elicited in the survey and connected to the collaboration network. Finally, the dataset also contains data on ecological system interdependencies in the form of conceptual maps derived from 34 expert interviews (3-4 experts per case).</p>

Quantitative raw data for "Large scale regional citizen surveys report" (D1.4)

<p>This dataset presents the quantitative raw data that was collected under the H2020 RRI2SCALE project for the D1.4&nbsp;-&nbsp;&nbsp;&ldquo;Large scale regional citizen surveys report&rdquo;. The dataset includes the answers that were provided by almost 8,000 participants from 4 pilot European regions (Kriti, Vestland, Galicia, and Overijssel) regarding the general public&#39;s views, concerns, and moral issues about the current and future trajectories of their RTD&amp;I ecosystem.&nbsp;The original survey questionnaire was created by White Research SRL and disseminated to the regions through supporting pilot partners. Data collection took place from June 2020 to September 2020 through 4 different waves &ndash; one for each region. Based on the conclusion of a consortium vote during the kick-off meeting, it was decided that instead of resource-intensive methods that would render data collection unduly expensive, to fill in the quotas responses were collected through online panels by survey companies that were used for each region. For the statistical analysis of the data and the conclusions drawn from the analysis, you can access the &quot;Large scale regional citizen surveys report&quot; (D1.4).</p>

Identifying behavioral and attitudinal barriers and drivers to promote consumption of pulses: A quantitative survey across five European countries

<p>Even though pulses are nutritious and environmentally friendly high-protein crops, they are commonly regarded as old-fashioned. Consumption of pulses is low in developed countries, and it has received very limited attention in agricultural and behavioral research over the past years. Based on a pan-European survey, the present study aims to provide extensive insights into consumer perceptions towards pulses. The objective is to identify effective measures to increase consumer acceptance of pulses, and thus potentially increase their share in the daily diets across Europe. Quantitative data was collected in May 2020 through a web-based survey conducted in five different European countries, Germany, Denmark, Spain, Poland, and the United Kingdom (N&nbsp;=&nbsp;4,916). Quota-based sampling was used to ensure comparability across samples and wide coverage in terms of age, gender, and locality of residence. Using cluster analysis with a subsequent logistic regression, cross-cultural differences were found in terms of relatively high consumption of pulses among Spanish respondents, somewhat lower for Polish, German and UK respondents, and even lower among Danish respondents. Drivers of consumption significantly differed across surveyed samples, mainly being health first, followed by sensory preferences. For respondents from Poland, Spain, and Germany the main reason for not consuming pulses related to problems with digestion, whereas in the Danish and UK samples a neglect related to preparation. Future product development as well as increased information about nutrition and cooking of pulses could potentially increase consumer acceptance. Though, considering cross-cultural differences is important when developing strategies to promote consumption of pulses.</p>

Data for: Gender medicine teaching increases medical students' gender awareness: results of a quantitative online survey

<p><span><strong>Background</strong> </span></p> <p><span>Gender medical knowledge is insufficiently integrated into university teaching in Germany. Gender awareness represents a key competence to integrate this knowledge into one's medical practice. This study is the first survey of the gender awareness of medical students in Germany.</span></p> <p><strong><span>Methods</span> </strong></p> <p><span>From April to July 2021, a quantitative cross-sectional survey in an online format using the 'Nijmegen Gender Awareness in Medicine Scale' (2008) was conducted at four German universities (Charité Berlin, Friedrich-Schiller-University Jena, Ludwig-Maximilians-University Munich, and the University of Cologne) with a varied implementation of teaching gender medicine. Students indicated their agreement or disagreement with assumptions and knowledge about the influence of gender in everyday medical practice (gender sensitivity), as well as gender role stereotypes towards patients and physicians (gender role ideology). </span></p> <p><strong><span>Results </span></strong></p> <p><span>The 750 included participants showed a relatively high gender sensitivity and low gender role stereotyping towards patients and doctors. The curricular implementation of gender medicine of the universities showed to have a significant influence on the students' gender sensitivity, as well as on their gender role stereotyping towards patients. Students who reported having taken classes in gender medicine showed significantly higher level of gender sensitivity. Cis-males showed significantly lower gender sensitivity and significantly higher gender role stereotyping.</span></p> <p><span><strong>Conclusion</strong> </span></p> <p><span>Implementation of gender medicine in the medical curriculum, attending courses on gender education and one's gender have a significant impact on medical students' gender competencies. These results support the need for structural integration of gender in medical education and gender trainings at medical schools in Germany.</span></p>

Inferring quantitative species interactions of seeds and seed-feeding carabid beetles from ecological survey data

<p>Here, we develop a trait-based approach suitable for creating quantitative networks, i.e. with varying interaction strengths. We applied this method to existing ecological survey data from an arable field&nbsp;of carabid ground beetles (Coleoptera: Carabidae) from pitfall traps and plant seeds from seed rain traps.&nbsp;We used existing data in the literature to predict a per-individual interaction cost index from carabid and seed size, based on frequency-dependent prey selection and the energetic intake of seeds by carabids. This was scaled up to the population level to create predicted inferred weighted networks using the sampled abundance of carabids and seeds, energetic intake rates in the literature, and assuming bottom up control. From this we calculated a novel predation pressure ratio which was the predicted seed predation (the sum of interaction strengths) relative to seed abundance.</p> <p>This is made available as an R markdown file with associated data files.</p>

Data from: Epidemiological survey of the feasibility of broadband ultrasound attenuation measured using calcaneal quantitative ultrasound to predict the incidence of falls in the middle aged and elderly

Objectives: We investigated whether calcaneal quantitative ultrasound (QUS-C) is a feasible tool for predicting the incidence of falls. Design: Prospective epidemiological cohort study. Setting: Community-dwelling people sampled in central western Taiwan. Participants: A cohort of community-dwelling people who were ≥40 years old (men: 524; women: 676) in 2009–2010. Follow-up questionnaires were completed by 186 men and 257 women in 2012. Methods: Structured questionnaires and broadband ultrasound attenuation (BUA) data were obtained in 2009–2010 using QUS-C, and follow-up surveys were done in a telephone interview in 2012. Using a binary logistic regression model, the risk factors associated with a new fall during follow-up were analysed with all significant variables from the bivariate comparisons and theoretically important variables. Primary outcome measures: The incidence of falls was determined when the first new fall occurred during the follow-up period. The mean follow-up time was 2.83 years. Results: The total incidence of falls was 28.0 per 1000 person-years for the ≥40 year old group (all participants), 23.3 per 1000 person-years for the 40–70 year old group, and 45.6 per 1000 person-years for the ≥70 year old group. Using multiple logistic regression models, the independent factors were current smoking, living alone, psychiatric drug usage and lower BUA (OR 0.93; 95% CI 0.88 to 0.99, p&lt;0.05) in the ≥70 year old group. Conclusions: The incidence of falls was highest in the ≥70 year old group. Using QUS-C-derived BUA is feasible for predicting the incidence of falls in community-dwelling elderly people aged ≥70 years.

Data from: A quantitative survey of local adaptation and fitness trade-offs

The long history of reciprocal transplant studies testing the hypothesis of local adaptation has shown that populations are often adapted to their local environments. Yet many studies have not demonstrated local adaptation, suggesting that sometimes native populations are no better adapted than are genotypes from foreign environments. Local adaptation may also lead to trade-offs, in which adaptation to one environment comes at a cost of adaptation to another environment. I conducted a survey of published studies of local adaptation to quantify its frequency and magnitude and the costs associated with local adaptation. I also quantified the relationship between local adaptation and environmental differences and the relationship between local adaptation and phenotypic divergence. The overall frequency of local adaptation was 0.71, and the magnitude of the native population advantage in relative fitness was 45%. Divergence between home site environments was positively associated with the magnitude of local adaptation, but phenotypic divergence was not. I found a small negative correlation between a population's relative fitness in its native environment and its fitness in a foreign environment, indicating weak trade-offs associated with local adaptation. These results suggest that populations are often locally adapted but stochastic processes such as genetic drift may limit the efficacy of divergent selection.
