Data and code from "No evidence of sex ratio manipulation by black-throated blue warblers in response to food availability" Kaiser et al. 2023 Behavioral Ecology and Sociobiology
This dataset is published in support of "No evidence of sex ratio manipulation by black-throated blue warblers in response to food availability" by Kaiser et al. 2023 in Behavioral Ecology and Sociobiology. Data and code to test the assumptions and key predictions of the Trivers-Willard hypothesis, which proposes that females produce more sons or daughters depending on food availability, in the black-throated blue warbler at the Hubbard Brook Experimental Forest, NH, 2007-2012. Datasets support analyses of sex ratio bias at both the nest and nestling levels. Data tables support the comparison of the ratio of variances in the scaled pre-fledging mass of male and female nestlings using an F test and reproduction of Figures 2a and 2b. Figures are those used in the published manuscript. Code supports the calculation of offspring sex ratio bias at the population level, and considering separately both low- and high-quality habitats, using the Neuhäuser test, statistical models testing the assumptions of the Trivers-Willard hypothesis, effects of food availability and parental provisioning on offspring sex ratio, and effects of food availability on pre-fledging nestling mass of sons and daughters, and a power analysis to determine the power to detect an effect of food supplementation on sex ratio. These data were gathered as part of the Hubbard Brook Ecosystem Study (HBES). The HBES is a collaborative effort at the Hubbard Brook Experimental Forest, which is operated and maintained by the US Forest Service, Northern Research Station.

<p>This data set was used for the modelling in the article M. Kölbach, O. Höhn, K. Rehfeld, M. Finkbeiner, J. Barry, and M. M. May, “The annual-hydrogen-yield-climatic-response ratio: evaluating the real-life performance of integrated solar water splitting devices”<strong><em>,</em></strong> <em>Sustainable Energy Fuels</em>, <strong>2022</strong>, <strong>6</strong>, 4062-4074, <a href="https://doi.org/10.1039/D2SE00561A">https://doi.org/10.1039/D2SE00561A</a>.</p> <p>It contains the External Quantum Efficiency (EQE) data of a wafer-bonded AlGaAs//Si dual-junction solar cell for several top absorber compositions, angle of incidences, and temperatures modelled using the OPTOS formalism (see <a href="https://doi.org/10.1364/OE.24.0A1083">https://doi.org/10.1364/OE.24.0A1083</a> , <a href="https://doi.org/10.1364/OE.23.0A1720">https://doi.org/10.1364/OE.23.0A1720</a> , and <a href="http://doi.org/10.1109/JPHOTOV.2021.3064562"> https://doi.org/10.1109/JPHOTOV.2021.3064562</a>). Moreover, the data set includes hourly resolved direct and diffuse solar spectra for a location near the Neumayer station in Antarctica (-70.67°/-8.28°) that were modelled using the libRadtran software package for the year 2021 (see <a href="https://doi.org/10.1140/epjconf/e2009-00912-1">https://doi.org/10.1140/epjconf/e2009-00912-1</a> and <a href="http://doi.org/10.5194/acp-5-1855-2005">https://doi.org/10.5194/acp-5-1855-2005</a>). The modelling of the spectra was performed employing the predefined “subarctic summer” and “subarctic winter” atmosphere datasets assuming a tilt angle of 70° and 1-axis tracking. For the sake of simplicity, no cloud cover was assumed over the course of the whole year. Finally, the input files required for modelling the climatic response of solar water splitting devices for the selected location in Antarctica using the “climatic_response_function” of YaSoFo (see <a href="http://doi.org/10.5281/zenodo.5257492">https://doi.org/10.5281/zenodo.5257492</a> for an extended example) are included in the data set.</p>
Experimental evolution under varying sex ratio and behavioral plasticity in response to perceived competitive environment independently affect calling effort in male crickets
<p>The operational sex ratio (OSR) is a key component influencing the magnitude of sexual selection driving the evolution of male sexual traits, but males often also retain the ability to plastically modulate trait expression depending on the current environment. Here we employed an experimental evolution approach to determine whether the OSR affects the evolution of male calling effort in decorated crickets, a costly sexual trait, and whether plasticity in calling effort is altered by the OSR under which males have evolved. Calling effort of males from two selection regimes maintained at different OSRs over 18–20 generations (male- versus female-biased) was recorded at two different levels of perceived competition, in the absence of rivals or in the presence of an experimentally muted competitor. The effect of the OSR on the evolution of male calling effort was modest and in the opposite direction predicted by theory. Instead, the immediate competitive environment strongly influenced male calling effort as males called more in the presence of a rival, revealing considerable plasticity in this trait. This increased calling effort came at a cost, however, as males confined with a muted rival experienced significantly higher mortality.</p>

Mass ratio effects underlie ecosystem responses to environmental change
1. Random species loss has been shown experimentally to reduce ecosystem function, sometimes more than other anthropogenic environmental changes. Yet, controversy surrounds the importance of this finding for natural systems where species loss is non-random. 2. We compiled data from 16 multi-year experiments located at a single site in native tallgrass prairie. These experiments included responses to 11 anthropogenic environmental changes, as well as non-random biodiversity loss - either the removal of uncommon/rare plant species or the most common (dominant) species. 3. As predicted by the mass ratio hypothesis, loss of a dominant species had large impacts on productivity that were comparable to other anthropogenic drivers. In contrast, the loss of uncommon/rare species had small effects on productivity despite having the largest effects on species richness. 4. The anthropogenic drivers that had the largest effects on productivity – nitrogen, irrigation, and fire – experienced not only loss of species but also significant changes in the abundance and identity of dominant species. 5. Synthesis. These results suggest that mass ratio effects rather than species loss per se is an important determinant of ecosystem function with environmental change.
Extraordinarily precise nematode sex ratios: adaptive responses to vanishingly rare mating opportunities
<p><span>Sex ratio theory predicts both mean sex ratio and variance under a range of population structures. Here, we compare two genera of phoretic nematodes (<i>Parasitodiplogaster </i>and <i>Ficophagus </i>spp.) associated with twelve fig-pollinating wasp species in Panama. The host wasps exhibit classic Local Mate Competition: only inseminated females disperse from natal figs, and their offspring form mating pools that consist of scores of the adult offspring contributed by one or a few foundress mothers. In contrast, in both nematode genera only sexually undifferentiated juveniles disperse and their mating pools routinely consist of ten or fewer adults.</span> <span>Across all mating pool sizes, the sex ratios observed in both nematode genera are consistently female-biased (~0.34 males), which is markedly less female-biased than is often observed in the host wasps (~0.10 males). In further contrast with their hosts, variances in nematode sex ratios are also consistently precise (significantly less than binomial). The constraints associated with predictably small mating pools within highly subdivided populations appear to select for precise sex ratios that contribute both to the reproductive success of individual nematodes, and to the evolutionary persistence of nematode species. We suggest that some form of environmental sex determination underlies these precise sex ratios.</span></p>

Brain size affects responsiveness in mating behavior to variation in predation pressure and sex-ratio
<p>Despite ongoing advances in sexual selection theory, the evolution of mating decisions remains enigmatic. Cognitive processes often require simultaneous processing of multiple sources of information from environmental and social cues. However, little experimental data exist on how cognitive ability affects such fitness-associated aspects of behavior. Using advanced tracking techniques, we studied mating behaviors of guppies artificially selected for divergence in relative brain size, with known differences in cognitive ability, when predation threat and sex-ratio was varied. In females, we found a general increase in copulation behavior in when the sex-ratio was female biased, but only large-brained females responded with greater willingness to copulate under a low predation threat. In males, we found that small-brained individuals courted more intensively and displayed more aggressive behaviors than large-brained individuals. However, there were no differences in female response to males with different brain size. These results provide further evidence of a role for female brain size in optimal decision-making in a mating context. In addition, our results indicate that brain size may affect mating display skill in male guppies. We suggest that it is important to consider the association between brain size, cognitive ability and sexual behavior when studying how morphological and behavioral traits evolve in wild populations.</p>
