Modelling CO2 emissions of cultivated and rewetted peat soils with SWAP-ANIMO - Dataset

<p><span>Three locations in Europe (wet river valley (Denmark), coastal peatland (The Netherlands) and broad river floodplain (Switzerland)) were selected for which two to three years of measurements of hydrological variables and CO2 exchange fluxes were available for some period between 2015 and 2023. The hydrology, grass growth and CO2 fluxes of these sites were modelled with the SWAP-ANIMO model using the available measurement period for model input and calibration. Model simulations were used to improve the understanding of the hydrological drivers of each site and to obtain estimates of the different pools contributing to the measured CO2 fluxes using a period of 10 years (2014-2023). Rewetting was considered either by calibration on direct measurements of an actual rewetting measure (Denmark, The Netherlands) or extrapolation of the reference simulation (Switzerland). Also, the potential impact of climate change on the rate of peat oxidation was modelled for these sites for both the reference and rewetting measure. </span></p> <p><span>The dataset contains the relevant detailed, daily model output of the 10 year simulation period and aggregated, yearly model output of the scenario simulations which are detailed in the corresponding report (van de Craats et al., 2024), available at <a href="https://doi.org/10.5281/zenodo.14041243">https://doi.org/10.5281/zenodo.14041243</a>.</span></p>

Data from: Invasive plants have greater growth than co-occurring natives in live soil subjected to a drought-rewetting treatment

<p>Although several studies indicate that invasive plant species respond more negatively to drought than native plant species, little remains understood of how and whether drought-rewetting events may affect growth of invasive and co-occurring native plant species both directly and indirectly through soil microorganisms. In a fully crossed factorial design, we grew individuals of four congeneric pairs of invasive and native plant species in 2.5 L pots that contained live or sterilized field soil under one of three drought treatments: no-drought, drought, drought-rewetting. Results show that drought caused a significantly greater decline in total biomass of invasive plants than that of native plants regardless of the presence of live soil microorganisms. However, total biomass of the invasive plants exhibited a greater recovery from drought following rewetting than did that of the native plant species. Moreover, the recovery from drought in invasive species tended to be stronger in live soil than in sterilized soil, while for the native plants, recovery from drought was stronger in sterilized soil than in live soil. Overall, these results suggest that soil biota may enable invasive plants to grow larger than co-occurring native plant species in ecosystems that experience cycles of drought and rewetting.</p>

Rewetting prolongs root growing season in minerotrophic peatlands and mitigates negative drought effects

<p>Root phenology influences the timing of plant resource acquisition and carbon fluxes into the soil. This is particularly important in fen peatlands, in which peat is primarily formed by roots and rhizomes of vascular plants. However, most fens in Central Europe are drained for agriculture, leading to large carbon losses, and further threatened by increasing frequency and intensity of droughts. Rewetting fens aims to restore the original carbon sink, but how root phenology is affected by drainage and rewetting is largely unknown.</p> <p>We monitored root phenology with minirhizotrons in drained and rewetted fens (alder forest, percolation fen and coastal fen) as well as its soil temperature and water table depth during the 2018 drought. For each fen type, we studied a drained site and a site that was rewetted ~25 years ago, while all the sites studied had been drained for almost a century.</p> <p><span>Overall, the growing season</span> <span>was longer with rewetting, allowing roots to grow over a longer period in the year and have a higher root production than under drainage. With increasing depth, the growing season shifted to later in time but remained a similar length, and </span><span>the relative importance of soil temperature for root length changes increased with soil depth. </span></p> <p><em><span>Synthesis and applications.</span></em><span> Rewetting extended the growing season of roots, highlighting the importance of phenology in explaining root productivity in peatlands. A longer growing season allows a longer period of carbon sequestration in form of root biomass and promotes the peatlands' carbon sink function, especially through longer growth in deep soil layers.</span> <span>Thus, management practices that focus on rewetting peatland ecosystems are necessary to maintain their function as carbon sinks, particularly under drought conditions, and are a top priority to reduce carbon emissions and address climate</span><span> change.</span></p>

Rewetting does not return drained fen peatlands to their old selves

<p>Peatlands, in particular groundwater-fed fens of the temperate zone, have been drained for agriculture, forestry and peat extraction for a long time and on a large scale. Drainage turns peatlands from a carbon and nutrient sink into a respective source, diminishes water regulation capacity at the landscape scale, causes continuous surface height loss and destroys their typical biodiversity. Over the last decades, drained peatlands have been rewetted for biodiversity restoration and, as it strongly decreases greenhouse gas emissions, also for climate protection.</p> <p>With the dataset published here, we quantified restoration success by comparing 320 rewetted fen peatland sites to 243 near-natural peatland sites of similar origin across temperate Europe with regards to biodiversity (vegetation), ecosystem functioning (hydrology, geochemistry) and land cover characteristics based on remote sensing.</p> <p>Vegetation data comes as species-specific cover values. Hydrology data covers on average 2.3 years and minimally one full year and comes as median, minimum, and maximum water table depth. Geochemistry consists of pH and electrical conductivity of the pore water (0-60 cm), bulk density and organic matter content of the top soil layer (0-30 cm), all sampled in summer for all sites included here alongside the vegetation data sampling. Land cover characteristics contain 208 spectral-temporal metrics for a full annual time series of Copernicus Sentinel-2 A/B data for 2018.</p>

A Global Database of Gas Fluxes from Soils after Rewetting or Thawing, Version 1.0

This database contains information compiled from published studies on gas flux from soil following rewetting or thawing. The resulting database includes 222 field and laboratory observations focused on rewetting of dry soils, and 116 field laboratory observations focused on thawing of frozen soils studies conducted from 1956 to 2010. Fluxes of carbon dioxide, methane, nitrous oxide, nitrogen oxide, and ammonia (CO2, CH4, N2O, NO and NH3) were compiled from the literature and the flux rates were normalized for ease of comparison. Field observations of gas flux following rewetting of dry soils include events caused by natural rainfall, simulated rainfall in natural ecosystems, and irrigation in agricultural lands. Similarly, thawing of frozen soils include field observations of natural thawing, simulated freezing-thawing events (i.e., thawing of simulated frozen soil by snow removal), and thawing of seasonal ice in temperate and high latitude regions (Kim et al., 2012). Reported parameters include experiment type, location, site type, vegetation, climate, soil properties, rainfall, soil moisture, soil gas flux after wetting and thawing, peak soil gas flux properties, and the corresponding study references. There is one comma-delimited data file.
