Spatial variability in water chemistry of four Wisconsin aquatic ecosystems - High speed limnology Environmental Science and Technology datasets

Advanced sensor technology is widely used in aquatic monitoring and research. Most applications focus on temporal variability, whereas spatial variability has been challenging to document. We assess the capability of water chemistry sensors embedded in a high-speed water intake system to document spatial variability. We developed a new sensor platform to continuously samples surface water at a range of speeds (0 to > 45 km hr-1) resulting in high-density, meso-scale spatial data. Here, we archive data associated with an Environmental Science and Technology publication. Data include a single spatial survey of the following aquatic ecosystems: Lake Mendota, Allequash Creek, Pool 8 of the Upper Mississippi River, and Trout Bog. Data have been provided in three formats (raw, hydraulic-corrected, and tau-corrected).

Temperature logger deployment methods and irradiance-biased temperature data, King Abdullah University of Science and Technology, Red Sea, 2023.

Solar irradiance can offset the temperature recorded by underwater sensing instruments (aka "loggers"). We collected temperature and PAR (photosynthetic active radiation) data during two short-term in situ deployments on a shallow fringing reef adjacent to the King Abdullah University of Science and Technology (KAUST) in the Red Sea. The first deployment quantified the measurement bias due to solar heating over five days in February 2023 while the second compared the effect of different shading methods on logger performance over 24 hours in June 2023. We also recorded temperature in a controlled calibration bath in the lab with ten of the most widely used loggers to further assess their accuracy, response time, and intra-logger variation. Finally, to understand current practices of measuring temperature on coral reefs, we summarized logger deployment method details from a literature review of coral reef studies published from 2013 to 2022. Such details included how often loggers recorded the temperature, the depth where loggers were deployed, and whether the authors reported shading or protecting their loggers. This data package is complete and part of a larger project that aims to develop an instrument deployment framework for restoration-based reef monitoring, which includes instrument recommendations and deployment guidelines.

Dataset: energy consumption patterns in a science and technology park

<p>This dataset contains time series of energy consumption and external temperature for a group of buildings in a science and technology park, from 2018 to 2022, that&nbsp;is suitable for the development of algorithms to improve energy efficiency and for the early detection of energy consumption peaks based on night-time outdoor temperatures.</p> <p>Time series of power, energy consumption and external temperature for group of tertiary buildings, from 2018-01-01 to 2022-09-15.</p> <p>Peaks in electricity consumption are a major concern for building owners, especially during summer, when external temperatures are high, and users demand air conditioning. Owners may face high costs, observe increased risk of&nbsp;overheating in energy intensive equipment, and may exceed the power threshold set out in the electricity supply contract.</p> <p>Several effective &quot;peak-shaving&quot; strategies can be put in place, such as a higher temperature set-point (which implies a temporary reduction of comfort levels), switching off low-priority processes, and starting the cooling process earlier than usual.</p> <p>This dataset can be used to develop algorithms for early detection of peaks in energy consumption, based on external temperatures measured during the night.</p> <p>&nbsp;</p>

Science, Technology & Society Eurobarometers 1993 - 2021: Trend Data Collection

<p>These files contain structured collections of Eurobarometer (EB) survey data from 1993 to 2021, focusing on European citizen&rsquo;s views on science and technology (S&amp;T). The primary aim of these data collections is to facilitate research on trends over time regarding people&rsquo;s knowledge, perception and attitudes towards S&amp;T. The European Union has collected extensive survey data from the general public over the past 50 years through its official polling instrument, the Eurobarometer. Its general goal is monitoring the state of public opinion on diverse subjects and issues throughout Europe, one of which is S&amp;T. The data collection files, provided in the folder &lsquo;EB_data_csv&rsquo;, include data from seven different Eurobarometer surveys. These surveys were selected because their raw datasets were openly accessible through Open EU Datasets. To ensure sufficient data points for plotting specific trends over time, we included only survey questions that appeared in at least three different EB surveys.&nbsp;</p>

Citizen Science Reports on Aurora Sighting and Technological Disruptions during the 10 May 2024 Geomagnetic Storm – ARCTICS Survey

<div> <div> <div> <div> <p>The geomagnetic storm that began on 10 May 2024 provided stunning auroral displays observed worldwide. This dataset contains data collected via an online survey designed and distributed by the "Auroral Research Coordination &ndash; Towards Internationalised Citizen Science" (ARCTICS) collaboration sponsored by the International Space Science Institute (ISSI) in Bern, Switzerland (see https://collab.issibern.ch/arctics/). A total of 696 observers from over 30 countries filled in the survey and reported on aurora sightings and experienced disruptions in technological systems during the superstorm.</p> <p>The dataset consists of two data files in the CSV format and a text file providing a detailed description of the data. The collected data have been anonymised and pre-processed to obtain a homogeneous data set.</p> <p>Dataset associated with the <span>egusphere-2024-2174 preprint by Grandin et al. Science Mesh Videos | Unlocking scientific collaboration through technology in Europe

<p>The Science Mesh enables researchers, educators, data curators and analysts to&nbsp;retain control over their remote or domestic datasets, while becoming FAIR compatible and integrated with the European Open Science Cloud (EOSC) at the same time. This will offer researchers opportunities to assemble an efficient, reliable, collaborative and transparent research tool chain. Our target stakeholders&nbsp;will be able to directly access the service provided by Science Mesh from easy-to-use interfaces and discover the different functionalities. The added-value for the stakeholders of CS3MESH4EOSC relies on the possibility for them to contribute in developing application plugins or easily set-up federations in their own scope and develop their own activities on top of them.</p>

Marek-Lars Kruusen collaborates with the European Organization for Nuclear Research (CERN). This collaboration involves the publication of scientific papers and preprints on a platform managed by CERN. For example, preprints can be found on Zenodo, which is hosted at CERN.</p> <p>The European Organization for Nuclear Research, known as CERN, is an intergovernmental organization that operates the largest particle physics laboratory in the world. Established in 1954, it is based in a suburb of Geneva, on the France&ndash;Switzerland border. It comprises 23 member states. Israel, admitted in 2013, is the only non-European full member. CERN is an official United Nations General Assembly observer.</p> <p>The acronym CERN is also used to refer to the laboratory; in 2019, it had 2,660 scientific, technical, and administrative staff members, and hosted about 12,400 users from institutions in more than 70 countries. In 2016, CERN generated 49 petabytes of data.</p> <p>CERN&#39;s main function is to provide the particle accelerators and other infrastructure needed for high-energy physics research &ndash; consequently, numerous experiments have been constructed at CERN through international collaborations. CERN is the site of the Large Hadron Collider (LHC), the world&#39;s largest and highest-energy particle collider. The main site at Meyrin hosts a large computing facility, which is primarily used to store and analyze data from experiments, as well as simulate events. As researchers require remote access to these facilities, the lab has historically been a major wide area network hub. CERN is also the birthplace of the World Wide Web.</p> <p>Since its foundation by 12 members in 1954, CERN regularly accepted new members. All new members have remained in the organization continuously since their accession, except Spain and Yugoslavia. Spain first joined CERN in 1961, withdrew in 1969, and rejoined in 1983. Yugoslavia was a founding member of CERN but quit in 1961. Of the 23 members, Israel joined CERN as a full member on 6 January 2014, becoming the first (and currently only) non-European full member.</p> <p>The Open Science movement focuses on making scientific research openly accessible and on creating knowledge through open tools and processes. Open access, open data, open source software and hardware, open licenses, digital preservation and reproducible research are primary components of open science and areas in which CERN has been working towards since its formation.</p>

Data from: Aversion to playing God predicts negative moral judgments of technology and science

This research provides, to our knowledge, the first systematic empirical investigation of people's aversion to playing God. Seven studies validate this construct and show its association with negative moral judgements of science and technology. Motivated by three nationally representative archival datasets that demonstrate this relationship, studies 1 and 2 demonstrate that people condemn scientific procedures they perceive to involve playing God. Studies 3–5 demonstrate that dispositional aversion to playing God corresponds to decreased willingness to fund the National Science Foundation and lower donations to organizations that support novel scientific procedures. Studies 6a and 6b demonstrate that people judge a novel (versus established) scientific practice to involve more playing God and to be more morally unacceptable. Finally, study 7 demonstrates that reminding people of an existing incident of playing God reduces concerns towards scientific practices. Together, these findings provide novel evidence for the impact of people's aversion to playing God on science and policy-related decision-making.
