Perceived creativity in insight problems by secondary school students: Effects of problem and solver's variables

An exploratory empirical study was conducted to collect and analyse the perception of secondary education students regarding the creativity involved in insight problems. A total of 127 Spanish students from 8th grade (2nd ESO) and 11th grade (1st Bachillerato) participated in the study and assessed the creativity involved in the problems before and after attempting to solve them. These evaluations were related to the course, gender, surface, and structural aspects of the problems. Everyday life and science contexts were considered as problem surfaces or contexts. The structural aspects of the problems were associated with the specific strategy required to solve them, such as ‘chunk decomposition’ and ‘constrain relaxation,’ the assistance provided by the problem statement to initiate the resolution process, and the possibility of metacognitive control over the quality of the solution developed. Individual booklets were prepared with counterbalanced statements to assess perceived creativity and to solve the problems. The results show that, contrary to expectations, students are capable of mentally representing the structural aspects of the problems during reading and before solving them. The problem surface did not significantly affect the initial perception of creativity. After solving the problems, the average changes in perceived creativity were of small magnitude. The results encourage teachers to use insight problems as promoters of creativity in secondary school classrooms.

This dataset is for the research article titled Exploring Scientific Reasoning and Genetics Self-efficacy as Predictors of Secondary School Students’ Achievement in Genetics Concepts. The data were collected using three instruments (Lawson’s Classroom Test of Scientific Reasoning (r = 0.76), adopted from the Lawson's Classroom Test of Scientific Reasoning designed by Lawson in 2000; Self-efficacy in Genetics Concepts Scale (@ = 0.88),adapted from Schwarzer and Jerusalem (1995) General Self Efficacy Scale and Biology Self-Efficacy developed by Baldwin, Ebert-May and Burns (1999); and Students’ Achievement Test in Genetics Concepts (r = 0.78), self-designed by the athors) from 336 Secondary School Two (SS2) biology students selected from nine secondary schools randomly selected from three local government areas in Oyo State. SPSS version 26 was employed as the statitsical software, while data collected were subjected to mean, standard deviation, percentages, ANOVA and Multiple regression analysis at 0.05 level of significance.

A 10-day experience sampling dataset on subjective experiences of middle and secondary school students in 2022

This data note presents a dataset from a 10-day experience sampling study conducted among middle and secondary school students in 2022. The dataset includes a brief start-up survey in addition to 40 momentary assessments, enabling analysis of both inter- and intraindividual processes. The start-up survey includes validated measures on students’ perceptions of school-related support from family, peers, and teachers, general self-efficacy, and academic self-efficacy, as well as items on school enjoyment and school absenteeism. The experience sampling data includes items related to positive and negative emotions, lecture characteristics, perceived teacher style, peer relationships as well as sleep quality, breakfast, school readiness, and school day satisfaction. Data were collected using the "RealLife Exp" mobile app. Multiple procedures were undertaken to validate and confirm the reliability of the dataset. The methodological approach utilized for gathering the data featured in this dataset allows for a nuanced analysis of individual and contextual influences along with lagged effects on school well-being, with the potential to discover previously overlooked patterns and trends.
