Short-term heat waves have long-term consequences for parents and offspring in stickleback
<p>Extreme temperature events, such as heat waves, can have lasting effects on the behavior, physiology, and reproductive success of organisms. Here we examine the impact of short-term exposure to a simulated heat wave on condition, parental care, and reproductive success in a population of threespine stickleback (Gasterosteus aculeatus), a small fish with exclusive paternal care, currently experiencing regular heat waves. Males were either exposed to a simulated heat wave (23°C) for five days or held at an ideal temperature (18°C). All males had offspring that were raised at 18°C. We found that while mass and body condition were unaffected in males exposed to a heat wave, cortisol responses were dampened across the nesting cycle compared to control males. In addition, heat wave males had longer latency for eggs to hatch, lower hatching success, and were unable to parent at the same level as control males. Offspring of heat wave males had lower body condition, affecting swimming performance. Altogether, our results highlight the long-term impact that even short-term events can have on reproductive success, parental behavior, and subsequent generations, providing insight into population responses to rapid environmental change.</p>

Experiencing short heat waves early in development changes thermal responsiveness of turtle embryos to later heat waves
<p><span>Although physiological responses to the thermal environment are most frequently investigated using constant temperatures, the incorporation of thermal variability can allow for a more accurate prediction of how thermally sensitive species respond to a rapidly changing climate. In species with temperature-dependent sex determination (TSD), developmental responses to incubation temperature are mediated by several genes involved in gonadal differentiation. <em>Kdm6b</em> and <em>Dmrt1</em> respond to cool incubation temperatures and are associated with testis development, while <em>Foxl2</em> and <em>Cyp19A1</em> respond to warm incubation temperatures and are associated with ovary development. Using fluctuating incubation temperatures, we designed two studies, one investigating how conflicting thermal cues affect the timing of commitment to gonadal development, and another investigating the rapid molecular responses to conflicting thermal cues in the red-eared slider turtle (<em>Trachemys</em> <em>scripta</em>). Using gene expression as a proxy of timing of commitment to gonadal fate, results from the first study show that exposure to high amounts of conflicting thermal cues during development delays commitment to gonadal fate. Results from the second study show that <em>Kdm6b</em> splice variants exhibit differential responses to early heat wave exposure, but rapidly (within 2 days) recover to pre-exposure levels after the heat wave. Despite changes in the expression of <em>Kdm6b</em> splice variants, there was no effect on <em>Dmrt1</em> expression. Collectively, these findings demonstrate how short exposures to heat early in development can change how embryos respond to heat later in development.</span></p>

McMurdo Dry Valleys Glacier melt modeling: Short Wave Radiation 1996-2011
This is the data and metatada for modeled Long Wave Radiation - part of six modeled parameters that comprise the Taylor Valley Galcier Melt modeling Data contained and described in this document correspond to the physically-based surface energy balance model for the glaciers of Taylor Valley developed by the dataset owners. The spatial variability in ablation (ice melt and sublimation), runoff, and climate sensitivity of the glaciers was modeled using 16 years of meteorological and surface mass balance (the net mass gain or loss of ice on the surface of the glacier) observations collected in Taylor Valley (see figure).  An unusual aspect of the model is the inclusion of transmission of solar radiation into the ice and subsequent drainage of some subsurface melt .  Melt model was applied to the ablation zones of the glaciers of Taylor Valley, identified by colored areas. Mass balance stakes, meteorological stations, and stream gages shown for reference. RISWIR - A small short wave infrared dataset
<p>This dataset consists of sequences acquired in an urban environment with three cameras (one Short Wave Infrared and two color cameras in stereovision) mounted on the exterior of a vehicle. This is a relatively small dataset: 7049 frames in training and 3148 in testing.
