Tensile response of low clinker UHPFRC subjected to fully restrained shrinkage

<p>This dataset is from an experimental campaign on 6 free and 6 restrained TSTM (Temperature Stress Testing Machine) specimen made of UHPFRC (Ultra High Performance Fiber Reinforced Concrete), subjected to partial and fully restrained conditions, under quasi-isothermal conditions at 20&deg;C, performed by Mohamed Hafiz in the framework of his doctoral thesis. The development of autogenous shrinkage and corresponding eigenstresses under various degrees of restraint were studied for two types of mixes: Mix I with type I cement and silica fume and Mix II with silica fume and 50% mass replacement of type I cement with limestone filler. Amir Hajiesmaieli developed Mix II.</p>

Process map for casting a long-term experimental campaign on RC shrinkage cracking.

<p>This dataset presents the process map that was developed for the casting of a long-term experimental campaign on reinforced concrete (RC) slabs subjected to the combined effect of restrained shrinkage and vertical loads.<br> This experimental campaign was performed in the scope of the FCT project &quot;IntegraCrete: A comprehensive multi-physics and multi-scale approach to the combined effects of applied loads and thermal/shrinkage deformations in reinforced concrete structures&#39;&#39;.<br> The results from this experimental campaign are presented in Gomes et al (2020), while the conceptualization, planning and experimental procedures are described in detail in Gomes et al (2021). The latter is supported by this process map to describe the micromanagement plan that was devised for the casting day.<br> 14 people were involved in the casting of 3 slabs and 2 complementary specimens inside a highly instrumented climatic chamber, as well as 38 specimens for concrete characterization at different ages and 12 load blocks to use as vertical loads. This process map was developed with the standard Business Process Model and Notation (BPMN).</p>

Early 21st century accelerated glacier shrinkage and associated climatic drivers in Bhaga basin, north-western Himalaya

<p>This study investigates the glacier changes in the Bhaga basin, western Himalaya during the last five decades based on various satellite imagery: Corona KH4 (1971), Landsat 7 Enhanced Thematic Mapper Plus (ETM+; 2000), Linear Imaging Self-Scanning Sensor (LISS IV; 2013), Sentinel 2 (2016 and 2018). We compare glacier changes on spatial and temporal scales and their dependency on local topographic settings (elevation, slope, aspect, debris cover, presence of glacial lakes) and climatic fluctuations. Long-term (1900-present) reanalysis climatic datasets were evaluated to monitor the temperature and precipitation trend of the region. Glacier mapping from 2013 (LISS IV) images yielded 306 glaciers (&gt;0.2 km&sup2;) with a total area of 360.3 &plusmn; 4.0 km&sup2;, of which 55.7 &plusmn; 0.6 km&sup2; was covered by debris. Glaciers in the Bhaga basin lost -7.9 &plusmn; 1.5% (-0.17% yr&macr;&sup1;) of ice during 1971-2018 with a significant heterogeneous rate within tributary watersheds. The number of analyzed glaciers increased by nine due to fragmentations. In recent decades (2000-18), the deglaciation rate has increased significantly (-0.25% yr&macr;&sup1;) compared to previous decades (1971-2000; -0.12% yr&macr;&sup1;). The retreat rate has been observed to be much lower than previously reported. Heterogeneous ice loss was mostly controlled by the size, altitudinal range, orientation, and debris cover. Analysis and inter-comparison of multiple gridded climatic data during the last century shows a drastic change in climatic trends around 2000 in western Himalaya. Asian Precipitation-Highly Resolved Observational Data Integration Towards Evaluation (APHRODITE) data reveals an increasing trend in temperature (0.019&deg; C yr&macr;&sup1;) and a significant decreasing trend in precipitation (-1.969 mm yr&macr;&sup1;) after 1990. The observed glacier change in the Bhaga basin is in similarity to the observed climatic trend for the western Himalaya.</p>

Molecular mechanisms of seasonal brain shrinkage and regrowth in Sorex araneus

<div class="page"> <div class="layoutArea"> <div class="column"> <p>Human brains typically grow through development, then remain the same size in adulthood, and often shrink through age-related degeneration that induces cognitive decline and impaired functionality. In most cases, however, the neural and organismal changes that accompany shrinkage, especially early in the process, remain unknown. Paralleling neurodegenerative phenotypes, the Eurasian common shrew <em>Sorex</em> <em>araneus</em>, shrinks its brain in autumn through winter, but then reverses this process by rapidly regrowing the brain come spring. To identify the molecular underpinnings and parallels to human neurodegeneration of this unique brain size change, we analyzed multi-organ, season-specific transcriptomics and metabolomic data. Simultaneous with brain shrinkage, we discovered system-wide metabolic shifts from lipid to glucose metabolism, as well as neuroprotection of brain metabolic homeostasis through reduced cholesterol efflux. These mechanisms rely on a finely tuned brain-liver crosstalk that results in changes in expression of human markers of aging and neurodegeneration in Parkinson's disease and Huntington's disease. We propose metabolic shifts with signals that cross the brain-blood barrier are central to seasonal brain size changes in <em>S. araneus</em>, with potential implications for therapeutic treatment of human neurodegeneration.</p> </div> </div> </div>
