Finite amplitude sound propagation effects in volume backscattering measurements for fish abundance estimation
<p>The upload contains measurement and simulation data for finite-amplitude sound propagation effects in volume backscattering measurements. The experimental data are from a trawl survey conducted in the North Sea with R/V "G. O. Sars", 6-7 November 2004, passing several times over a group of Atlantic mackerel schools. The measurements are of the relative area backscattering coefficient, relative to 38 kHz, 2000 W power setting, at</p> <p>(1) 120 kHz with 250 W transmit power setting, 200 kHz with 120 W transmit power setting<br> (2) 120 kHz with 1000 W power setting, 200 kHz with 1000 W power setting.</p> <p>A Simrad EK60 echosounder system was used, alternating between the low (1) and high (2) power settings through the measurement series.</p> <p>The corresponding simulation data are calculated using the Bergen Code numerical solver of the KZK Equation. The medium parameters input to the simulations are based on CTD data from the field survey . The transducer and amplitude data were found by laboratory measurements on echo sounders of the same type as used in the survey.</p> <p>.m files are included for both .mat data files, with details on how to read the data.</p> <p>An article describing the data has been submitted by the authors to Acta Acustica, 2022.</p>
Biogeochemical rate data and sediment properties of samples used for a controlled flow through experiment testing the effect of nitrate on organic matter decomposition, PIE LTER, Plum Island Sound estuary, Massachusetts.
In this dataset, we used a controlled flow-through reactor (FTR) experiment to test the role of nitrate as an electron acceptor, and its effect on organic matter decomposition and the associated microbial community in salt marsh sediments. Organic matter decomposition significantly increased in response to nitrate, even at sediment depths typically considered resistant to decomposition. The use of isotope tracers suggests this pattern was largely driven by stimulated denitrification. Nitrate addition also significantly altered the microbial community and decreased alpha diversity, selecting for taxa belonging to groups known to reduce nitrate and oxidize more complex forms of organic matter. Fourier Transform-Infrared Spectroscopy further supported these results, suggesting that nitrate facilitated decomposition of complex organic matter compounds into more bioavailable forms. Taken together, these results suggest the existence of organic matter pools that only become accessible with nitrate and would otherwise remain stabilized in the sediment. The existence of such pools could have important implications for carbon storage, since greater decomposition rates as N loading increases may result in less overall burial of organic-rich sediment. Given the extent of nitrogen loading along our coastlines, it is imperative that we better understand the resilience of salt marsh systems to nutrient enrichment, especially if we hope to rely on salt marshes, and other blue carbon systems, for long-term carbon storage.
Data: Effects of broadband sound exposure on the interaction between foraging crab and shrimp – a field study

Trials were conducted in situ using baited cameras.</p> <p> </p> <p>Paper abstract:</p> <p>Aquatic animals live in an acoustic world in which they often rely on sound detection and recognition for various aspects of life that may affect survival and reproduction. Human exploitation of marine resources leads to increasing amounts of anthropogenic sound underwater, which may affect marine life negatively. Marine mammals and fishes are known to use sounds and to be affected by anthropogenic noise, but relatively little is known about invertebrates such as decapod crustaceans. We conducted experimental trials in the natural conditions of a quiet cove. We attracted shore crabs (<em>Carcinus maenas</em>) and common shrimps (<em>Crangon crangon</em>) with an experimentally fixed food item and compared trials in which we started playback of a broadband artificial sound to trials without exposure. During trials with sound exposure, the cumulative count of crabs that aggregated at the food item was lower, while variation in cumulative shrimp count could be explained by a negative correlation with crabs. These results suggest that crabs may be negatively affected by artificially elevated noise levels, but that shrimps may indirectly benefit by competitive release. Eating activity for the animals present was not affected by the sound treatment in either species. There was a fairly large crowd walking about, shopping. It was a Saturday. Some people were standing and listening to the man, some were mocking him, others didn't even notice. It was a sunny day, with a slight wind. St Helen's square is a large 'meeting place' for people with seats, flowers and usually musicians. I live in the centre of York and hear a lot of very interesting sounds there, everything from busking musicians, to many foreign languages, church bells, animals and much more. Ireally liked the recording of the preacher as it is quite clear that he passionately believes what he is saying. He was unaware that Iwas recording him. Iwish Ihad captured his whole sermon. Knocking Sound Effects With Emotional Intentions
<p>The dataset was recorded by the professional foley artist Ulf Olausson at the FoleyWorks (http://foleyworks.se/) studios in Stockholm on the 15th October, 2019. Inspired by previous work on knocking sounds [1]. we chose five type of emotions to be portrayed in the dataset: anger, fear, happiness, neutral and sadness.</p> <p>In order to imagine a situation where the knocking action is performed with a particular emotional intention, we provided the foley artist with common situations where these actions can happen. The emotions, alongside the context are the following:</p> <ul> <li><strong>Anger</strong>: telling a flatmate for the 4th time to turn down the very loud music.</li> <li><strong>Fear</strong>: alerting a neighbor of a possible risk.</li> <li><strong>Happiness</strong>: telling a flatmate you won a prize.</li> <li><strong>Neutral</strong>: parcel delivery.</li> <li><strong>Sadness</strong>: telling a friend someone passed away.</li> </ul> <p>We also encouraged the foley artist to perform diverse interpretations of the context provided in order to have a wider variety of sounds. The dataset was recorded with a Rode NT1 microphone, performing the knocks to a closed door.</p> <p>We recorded a total of 600 knocking actions (120 actions per category). An action is a sequence of individual knocks. We discarded 20 actions per category to filter out unwanted noise. The final 500 audio files were edited only to trim the audio so each file starts on the first knock onset and finish on the last knock decay. </p> <p> </p> <p> </p> <p>[1] R. Vitale and R. We present an experimental design of a controlled behavioural experiment that allows to collect relatively long-term data on foraging and swimming behaviour of Atlantic cod during sound exposures. Data on such behavioural states can be used as proxies for energy intake and expenditure. The Atlantic cod exhibited natural foraging behaviour in the experimental basins and the design allowed for efficient scoring of the behaviour throughout the 6-day trials. Motor performance in violin bowing: Effects of attentional focus on acoustical, physiological and physical parameters of a sound-producing action
<p>Violin bowing is a specialised sound-producing action, which may be affected by psychological performance techniques. In sport, attentional focus impacts motor performance, but limited evidence for this exists in music. We investigated the effects of attentional focus on acoustical, physiological, and physical parameters of violin bowing in experienced and novice violinists. Attentional focus significantly affected spectral centroid, bow contact point consistency, shoulder muscle activity, and novices’ violin sway. Performance was most improved when focusing on tactile sensations through the bow (somatic focus), compared to sound (external focus) or arm movement (internal focus). Implications for motor performance theory and pedagogy are discussed.</p>
