Free Open Source Communities Sustainability: Does It Make a Difference in Software Quality?

<p><strong>Context:</strong> Free and Open Source Software (FOSS) communities' ability to stay viable and productive over time is pivotal for society as they maintain the building blocks that digital infrastructure, products, and services depend on. Sustainability may, however, be characterized from multiple aspects, and less is known how these aspects interplay and impact community outputs, and software quality specifically.</p> <p><strong>Objective: </strong>This study, therefore, aims to empirically explore how the different aspects of FOSS sustainability impact software quality.</p> <p><strong>Method: </strong>16 sustainability metrics across four categories were sampled and applied to a set of 217 OSS projects sourced from the Apache Software Foundation Incubator program. The impact of a decline in the sustainability metrics was analyzed against eight software quality metrics using Bayesian data analysis, which incorporates probability distributions to represent the regression coefficients and intercepts.</p> <p><strong>Results: </strong>Findings suggest that selected sustainability metrics do not significantly affect defect density or code coverage. However, a positive impact of community age was observed on specific code quality metrics, such as risk complexity, number of very large files, and code duplication percentage. Interestingly, findings show that even when communities are experiencing sustainability, certain code quality metrics are negatively impacted.</p> <p><strong>Conclusion:</strong> Findings imply that code quality practices are not consistently linked to sustainability, and defect management and prevention may be prioritized over the former. Results suggest that growth, resulting in a more complex and large codebase, combined with a probable lack of understanding of code quality standards, may explain the degradation in certain aspects of code quality.</p>

Irrigation water source matters: Saline groundwater irrigation lowers date palm root-associated fungal richness and alters their community patterns

<p>Saline groundwater irrigation is predominantly used for date palm (<em>Phoenix dactylifera</em>) cultivation in the arid regions of the Middle East and North Africa without knowing its impact on root-associated fungal (RAF) communities. We investigated the impact of irrigation water sources (freshwater <em>vs.</em> saline groundwater) on date palm RAF diversity, communities, and their assembly processes. Summarily, we show that water chemistry (pH and EC) mainly structures RAF communities, whereas water pH shapes saprotrophic and pathotrophic communities, and the higher abundance of saprotrophic RAF (i.e. <em>Acrocalymma&nbsp;vagum</em>) under saline groundwater irrigation, despite the higher importance of the drift process, indicates their potential role in nutrient cycling and plant growth promotion under saline conditions in arid agroecosystems.</p>

Data from: Plant community response to switchgrass (Panicum virgatum) population source in establishing prairies

Ecological restoration and revegetation efforts entail the translocation of native plant populations. Risks associated with these efforts include failure of translocated populations to establish or, conversely, such strong establishment that they excessively dominate the recipient community. The role that selective breeding plays in mediating these risks is unclear but of increasing importance as efforts to restore and establish multifunctional grasslands also increase. In a three-year, spatially replicated study, we seeded experimental prairie communities with either domesticated (cultivar) or undomesticated strains of Panicum virgatum (switchgrass), a North American C4 species under development as a biomass crop. We evaluated the composition, performance, and diversity of the recipient plant communities and compared the performance of cultivar and undomesticated switchgrass in those communities. We found little evidence that switchgrass population source affected community response. Switchgrass cultivars modestly exceeded undomesticated strains with respect to stand establishment, third-year stand density, and aboveground biomass; effect size and significance differed among sites. Our results suggest that including cultivars in ecological restorations and multifunctional grasslands may enhance success of switchgrass establishment with little risk of impairing the composition or diversity of plant communities for up to three years, as reflected in the measures used here. However, the incorporation of undomesticated switchgrass into multifunctional grasslands may enhance landscape-scale genetic variation and mitigate risks associated with gene flow between translocated and local wild switchgrass populations; more research on these dynamics is needed.

Fertilization can accelerate the pace of soil microbial community response to rest-grazing duration in the Three-river Source Region of China

<div> <div> <p><strong><span>Objectives</span></strong> </p> <p><span>Overgrazing leads to grassland degradation and productivity decline. Rest-grazing during the regreen-up period can quickly restore grassland and fertilization is a common restoration measure. Meanwhile, soil microorganisms are more sensitive indicators. Therefore, the experiment of rest-grazing time and fertilization was carried out to explore the response of soil microorganisms to rest-grazing time and fertilization measures. </span></p> <p><span><strong>Methods</strong> </span></p> <p><span>A field control experiment with rest-grazing time and fertilization as factors was conducted from the time when grass returned to green till the livestock moved to the summer pasture in Dawu Town of Maqin County.</span> <span>The primary treatment we established was the five</span> <span>rest-grazing times, including rest-grazing times of 20 days, 30 days, 40 days, 50 days, and traditional grazing was used as a check group. At the same time, the secondary treatment was nitrogen addition of 300 kg·hm<sup>-2</sup> in each primary treatment. </span></p> <p><span><strong>Results</strong> </span></p> <p><span>The results showed that: the total phospholipid fatty acid (total PLFA), actinomyces (Act) and arbuscular </span><span>mycorrhizal fungi (AMF) showed an ever-increasing biomass with the increase of rest-grazing time and the highest was at 50 days of rest-grazing, and they were all significantly higher than CK. In addition, soil microbial biomass carbon-nitrogen ratio (MBC/MBN)</span> <span>had a great influence on the change of microbial community. Applying nitrogen fertilizer can increase the maximum value of biomass of all PLFA groups and the biomass of all PLFA groups changed in an "inverted V" shape with the increase of rest-grazing time. Besides, </span><span>instead of MBC/MBN, NO<sub>3</sub><sup>-</sup>-N</span><span> was positively affected by the biomass of</span> <span>all PLFA groups, which actively regulated the trend of microbial functions. </span></p> <p><span><strong>Conclusions</strong> </span></p> <p><span>The longer rest-grazing time is more conducive to the biomass of all PLFA groups. However, applying nitrogen fertilizer could break this pattern, namely, the 30d rest-grazing would</span> <span>be beneficial to the biomass of all PLFA groups. These findings provide key information that rest-grazing during the regreen-up period is beneficial to all PLFA groups and </span><span>fertilization could change the response of microorganisms to rest-grazing</span><span>, which provides reference measures for the restoration of degraded alpine meadows.</span></p> </div> </div>

Both source and recipient range phylogenetic community structure can predict the outcome of avian introductions

<p>Competing phylogenetic models have been proposed to explain the success of species introduced to other communities. Here, we present a study predicting the establishment success of birds introduced to Florida, Hawaii, and New Zealand using several alternative models, considering species' phylogenetic relatedness to source and recipient range taxa, propagule pressure, and traits. We find consistent support for the predictive ability of source region phylogenetic structure. However, we find that the effects of recipient region phylogenetic structure vary in sign and magnitude depending on inclusion of source region phylogenetic structure, delineation of the recipient species pool, and the use of phylogenetic correction in the models. We argue that tests of alternative phylogenetic hypotheses including the both source and recipient community phylogenetic structure, as well as important covariates such as propagule pressure, are likely to be critical for identifying general phylogenetic patterns in introduction success, predicting future invasions, and for stimulating further exploration of the underlying mechanisms of invasibility.</p>

Why is my community reacting like this? Understanding reactions in open-source communities

<p>In 2016, GitHub introduced the Reactions feature to facilitate the expression of sentiments and reduce noise in communications on its platform. Recent studies indicated that developers has been adopting the feature and was observed a reduction of noise on conversations inside the platform. However, the patterns of usage and profiles of users expressing these reactions in inside their communities remain underexplored. Identifying these patterns may help maintainers to better understand members' behaviors in their communities, and researchers to build supporting tools focused on users' reactions. This paper presents an initial study to (i) understand these interactions on open-source software communities, (ii) identify types of resources that receive the most reactions, (iii) analyzing seasonal factors influencing usage, and (iv) correlating the provided reactions with the roles of developers within the community. Preliminary results indicate that users primarily react to comments in Issues, with notable periods of heightened activity. Additionally, significant differences were observed between the reactions of maintainers and other members of the community.</p>

Free Open Source Communities Sustainability: Does It Make a Difference in Software Quality?

PyonAir: An open design, open source, air quality monitor for community driven particulate matter sensing.

<p>This dataset present some of the data recorded by two low-cost PM sensors, a Plantower PMS5003 and a Sensirion SPS030 located at Southampton AURN reference station on the 2nd December 2019 between 17:00 and 22:00 during a fire that occurred in the city.
