Database of local seismicity registered on ocean bottom seismometers (OBS). Database related to Bornstein et al. (accepted in Earth and Space Science), PICKBLUE

<p>We assembled a database of Ocean Bottom Seismometer (OBS) waveforms and manual P and S picks from local seismicity, on which we trained PickBlue, a deep-learning picker, using the seismometer data and the hydrophone channel. The dataset belongs to Bornstein et al. (accepted 2023 in Earth and Space Science). The first column is the wavelength (in micrometers) and the other columns contain the reflectance data (in unit of reflectance factor). ScintPi: A low-cost, easy-to-build GPS ionospheric scintillation monitor for DASI studies of space weather, education, and citizen science initiatives

<p>These data sets contain ionospheric scintillation (GPS L1) observations (S4 indices) collected by a ScintPi prototype during 2018 at&nbsp;a low magnetic latitude station (Presidente Prudente).&nbsp;ScintPi is a low-cost, easy-to-build GPS ionospheric scintillation monitor for DASI studies of space weather, education, and citizen science initiatives.</p> <p>The file named &quot;ScintPi_PPR_S4_2018.mat&quot; contains&nbsp;S4 values (s4mat) for 2018 as a function of universal time (utmat), day-of-year (doymat),&nbsp;GPS satellite identifier number (prnmat), GPS satellite elevation (elmat) and azimuth (azmat)&nbsp;angles.</p> <p>The file named &quot;ScintPi_PPR_20180211.mat&quot; contains example raw (10 Hz) measurements made by ScintPi on February 11, 2018. Fault Traces Dataset for Zou and Fialko Earth and Space Sciences Manuscript

<p>The 'xx_fault.dat' contains the linked fault traces of different regions (nz: Northern New Zealand; nv: Basin and Range Province; ca: Ventura County, California; np: Pennsylvania and Northern New Jersey); The 1st and 2nd columns are UTM coordinates; The 3rd column is the random number assigned for distinguishing each fault traces.</p> <p>The 'xx_len.dat' contains the length of each fault trace in the corresponding regions, in km.</p> <p>The other '.dat' files and the 'SunData.xls' contain the length of fractures from outcrop and lab data. All of them are frequency distribution, except the 'LaHouve_Villemin.dat' which is already in cumulative distribution. Dispatches from the neighborhood watch: using citizen science and field survey data to document color morph frequency in space and time

<p>Heritable color polymorphisms have a long history of study in evolutionary biology, though they are less frequently examined today than in the past. These systems, where multiple discrete, visually identifiable color phenotypes co-occur in the same population, are valuable for tracking evolutionary change and ascertaining the relative importance of different evolutionary mechanisms. Here, we use a combination of citizen science data and field surveys in the Great Lakes region of North America to identify patterns of color morph frequencies in the eastern gray squirrel (<i>Sciurus carolinensis</i>). Using over 68,000 individual squirrel records from both large and small spatial scales, we identify the following patterns: (1) the melanistic (black) phenotype is often localized but nonetheless widespread throughout the Great Lakes region, occurring in all states and provinces sampled. (2) In Ohio, where intensive surveys were performed, there is a weak but significantly positive association between color morph frequency and geographic proximity of populations. Nonetheless, even nearby populations often had radically different frequencies of the melanistic morph, which ranged from 0 to 96%. These patterns were mosaic rather than clinal. (3) In the Wooster, Ohio population, which had over eight years of continuous data on color morph frequency representing nearly 40,000 records, we found that the frequency of the melanistic morph increased gradually over time on some survey routes but decreased or did not change over time on others. These differences were statistically significant and occurred at very small spatial scales (on the order of hundreds of meters). Together, these patterns are suggestive of genetic drift as an important mechanism of evolutionary change in this system. We argue that studies of color polymorphism are still quite valuable in advancing our understanding of fundamental evolutionary processes, especially when coupled with the growing availability of data from citizen science efforts.</p>

Data from: Candelariella clarkii and Lecidea hoganii: two lichen species new to science from White Rocks Open Space, City of Boulder, Colorado

Two new species are described from vouchers collected as part of an intensive lichen inventory of Fox Hills Sandstone outcrops in an open space preserve within the city limits of Boulder, Colorado. Candelariella clarkii is characterized by its cryptolecanorine apothecia, chartreuse areolate thallus, and 8-spored asci. Lecidea hoganii is a member of the L. auriculata morphological group characterized by a thick white chalky thallus, pink pigments in the hymenium, and absence of secondary compounds. We provide IUCN conservation assessments for both new species, which should be considered critically endangered. The discovery of two species new to science in a relatively densely populated region of North America illustrates the ecological relevance of small of patches of native habitat, which are certain to become even more important in the future.

The Quality Controlled Lightning Imaging Sensor (LIS) on International Space Station (ISS) Science Data dataset was collected by the LIS instrument mounted on the ISS and are used to detect the distribution and variability of total lightning occurring in the Earth’s tropical and subtropical regions. This dataset consists of quality controlled science data. This data collection can be used for severe storm detection and analysis, as well as for lightning-atmosphere interaction studies. The LIS instrument makes measurements during both day and night with high detection efficiency. The data are available in both HDF-4 and netCDF-4 formats, with corresponding browse images in GIF format.
