Data from: warming and top-down control of stage-structured prey: linking theory to patterns in natural systems

<p>Warming has broad and often nonlinear impacts on organismal physiology and traits, allowing it to impact species interactions like predation through a variety of pathways that may be difficult to predict. Predictions are commonly based on short-term experiments and models, and these studies often yield conflicting results depending on the environmental context, spatiotemporal scale, and the predator and prey species considered. Thus, the accuracy of predicted changes in interaction strength, and their importance to the broader ecosystems they take place in, remain unclear. Here, we attempted to link one such set of predictions generated using theory, modeling, and controlled experiments to patterns in the natural abundance of prey across a broad thermal gradient. To do so, we first predicted how warming will impact a stage-structured predator-prey interaction in riverine rock pools between Pantala spp. dragonfly nymph predators and Aedes atropalpus mosquito larval prey. We then described temperature variation across a set of hundreds of riverine rock pools (n = 775) and leveraged this natural gradient to look for evidence for or against our model's predictions. Our model's predictions suggested that warming should weaken predator control of mosquito larval prey by accelerating their development and shrinking the window of time that aquatic dragonfly nymphs could consume them in. This was consistent with data collected in rock pool ecosystems, where the negative effects of dragonfly nymph predators on mosquito larval abundance were weaker in warmer pools. Our findings provide additional evidence to substantiate our model-derived predictions, while emphasizing the importance of assessing similar predictions using natural gradients of temperature whenever possible.</p>

Data for: Estimating density dependence, environmental variance and long-term selection on a stage-structured life history

<p>We model growth of a density-dependent stage-structured population undergoing small or moderate fluctuations around a deterministically stable equilibrium in a stochastic environment, assuming that a weighted sum of stage abundances, N, exerts density dependence on the stage-specific vital rates of survival and reproduction. We approximate the dynamics of N as a onedimensional stochastic process with three key parameters: the density-independent growth rate and the net density dependence and environmental variance in the life history. Comparisons of populations and species with different life histories are facilitated using the key parameters, which we show how to estimate from long-term demographic data on fluctuations in the vital rates. We also show that life history evolution is a stochastic maximization of a simple function of the key parameters. Elements in the long-term selection gradient acting on the life history can be expressed as sensitivities of this function with respect to density-independent, density-dependent, and stochastic components of the vital rates. Using years of demographic data on a great tit population, we estimate the key demographic parameters, which accurately predict the observed mean, coefficient of variation, and fluctuation rate of N, and also evaluate the long-term selection gradient on the population.</p>

Data from: Keeping pace with climate change: stage-structured moving-habitat models

Life cycles can limit the abilities of species to track changing climatic conditions. We combined age or stage structure and a moving-habitat model to explore the effects of life history on the persistence of populations in the presence of climate change. We studied four dissimilar plant species in moving patches and found that (1) population growth rates, (2) elasticities with respect to the survival (stasis and shrinkage) components of the projection matrix, and (3) the evenness of the elasticities with respect to the components of the projection matrix all decreased as we increased the translational speeds of the patches. In addition, the value of long-distance dispersal increased with patch speed for three of the four species. Our analyses confirm that rapid growth, high fecundity, and long-distance dispersal can benefit species in moving patches. Thus, species with long generation times and limited dispersal ability are especially vulnerable to habitat movement. Stage-structured moving-habitat models can easily incorporate spatial complexity and can help us predict the effects of shifting climatic conditions.
