Harvard Forest Summer Research Program in Ecology Student Surveys 2016-2021
Program Context Since its inception in 1985, when a single undergraduate worked on a study of old-growth forests, the Harvard Forest Summer Research Program in Ecology (HF-SRPE) has developed into a thriving and well-coordinated program that is central to the educational and research mission of the biological field station. With core support since 1993 from a succession of NSF REU Site awards and NSF REU supplements, and with additional funding from Harvard University, HF-SRPE has grown to support 20-30 undergraduate students annually. Students are mentored by principle investigators and senior scientists in conducting research in ecology, soil science, paleoecology, wildlife biology, conservation biology, and atmospheric sciences. The research conducted by our HF-SRPE students contributes substantially to long-term scientific investigations supported by NSF’s Long-Term Ecological Research (LTER) and National Ecological Observatory Network (NEON), NASA Earth System Science Pathfinder (ESSP) – Earth Ventures (EV) programs, The Smithsonian Institution’s ForestGEO network of plots, and Department of Energy’s (DOE) National Institute for Global Environmental Change (NIGEC). The overarching objectives of the program are to: enhance the ability of students to undertake high-quality interdisciplinary research; build teams of researchers in which students bring different strengths to the table, collaborate on cutting-edge projects, and find their own intellectual “voice”; encourage students to link fundamental and applied issues in their research; and cultivate the next generation of ecological scientists and educators that reflects the diversity of backgrounds and experiences of students in the United States. Basic Needs and Student Success Survey (Pilot 2)
<p>Food insecurity among college students is a serious problem that can impact student performance in the classroom and ultimately effect student success. GenderInEnergy Student Survey 2023
<p>Today, the education and training landscape worldwide is confronted with an urgent need to prepare students for key roles in what is known as the energy transition. This global shift involves moving away from traditional, non-renewable energy sources, such as fossil fuels, towards a cleaner and more sustainable energy system primarily based on renewable sources. Every country must effectively manage this transition while ensuring social sustainability, requiring individuals with new or combined skill sets at all levels, from manual labour positions to top executives.</p><p>In light of this context, we conducted a survey among students in universities and other tertiary education institutions worldwide to explore their perceptions of the energy transition and assess their interest in pursuing a career in the energy sector or other positions at the forefront of this transformation. It was conducted in summer 2023. The questionnaires were implemented on the web, namely on EUSurvey and Netigate. The survey made use of a structured questionnaire with a range of closed questions and the option to add open text responses where appropriate. The survey was distributed with the help of the broad network of organisations and experts in the studied countries. In addition, a student panel provided by Netigate was used to reach the target number of responses. The survey was aimed an any person in the target population, irrespective of gender and field of education and training. The survey took 5 to 10 minutes to answer. All answers were anonymous, and the respondents were not asked any identifiable information, such as e-mail address, to avoid bias. The questionnaire was available in English as well as French, German, Italian, Polish and Spanish. No weighting was applied to the dataset.</p>
A questionnaire survey of expected characteristics of i-voting systems among students and graduates of agricultural colleges
<p>In order to find out the opinions on the transparency of remote electronic voting, a questionnaire survey was conducted among students and graduates of Czech universities with agricultural specialization. We assume that these are people with higher technical literacy who may be potential users of i-voting systems in farms in the near future. For the composition of the questions, the framework from Agbesi et al. (2023) was used to investigate the dimensions of transparency for Internet voting, supplemented with a few specific questions. Agbesi et al. (2023) identify five core dimensions, namely information accessibility, clarity, monitoring and verifiability, corrective action and testing, these dimensions influence the perception of transparency which in turn influences trust in the overall system. The anonymous questionnaire survey was conducted online via the Dotaznik.czu.cz platform operated by the Czech University of Life Sciences Prague. The invitation to participate in the survey was extended primarily to Czech students and graduates of agricultural universities. The questionnaire survey was conducted from 24 October 2023 to 12 May 2024. The questionnaire was freely accessible on the platform, therefore some respondents may be outside the target population within the limitations of the research. Participants were shown all information including consent to data processing on the homepage of the survey.</p> <p>Respondents answered on a seven-point Likert scale ranging from Strongly Disagree (0) to Strongly Agree (6) to statements within the five defined dimensions. A total of 177 individuals were recorded as completing the questionnaire. A total of 108 questionnaires were completed in full. Of these, 8 more questionnaires were removed because the control question "This question is not part of the survey and just helps us to detect bots and automated scripts. To confirm that you are a human, please choose 'Strongly agree' here" was answered differently than Strongly agree. Of the 100 responses examined, 64 were male, 35 were female, and 1 respondent did not indicate their gender. 72 respondents are aged 18-30, 18 aged 31-40, 5 aged 41-50, 2 aged 51-60 and 3 aged 61-70. 72 respondents have completed secondary education, 10 have a Bachelor's degree, 12 have a Master's degree and 6 have a PhD.</p>
Students' perceptions and attitudes towards science in PERFORM: Survey template
<p>This document contains the survey instrument developed to measure the impact of the PERFORM project RRI approach in students’ attitudes and pro-scientific behaviour and learning. It was a self-administered questionnaire combining close-ended with some open-ended qüestions. It was handled to students before and after the development of PERFORM participatory workshops to the participant students and a control group in order to:</p> <ul> <li>Obtain basic demographic data (those compatible with PERFORM ethical guidelines)</li> <li>Explore initial attitudes and perceptions towards science and STEM careers, with an emphasis on RRI-related dimensions (gender stereotypes, ethical issues, inclusiveness, engagement and critical/creative thinking) and potential changes after the implementation of participative performances (PERSEIAS in PERFORM jergon)</li> <li>Explore participants’ perceptions towards the PERSEIAS process, also as an input to inform the design of focus groups</li> </ul>
Compilation of data collected in surveys on the WissKI-based 3D Repository with DFG 3D-Viewer project partners and architecture students from the Warsaw University of Technology and the Technical University of Łódź
<p>The dataset contain the compiliation of responses from users of WissKI-based 3D Repository (https://3d-repository.hs-mainz.de/)., which is the open platform for deposit of 3D models of cultural heritage. The beta version of the WissKI 3D Repository, initiated in June 2022, has been subjected to evaluation by two primary target groups since its launch. The initial group, composed of students in the cultural heritage domain, was tasked with showcasing the importance of documenting and publishing 3D models of digital reconstructions. The survey with sutdents was conducted for three different classes: </p> <p>1) In summer 2022 with bachelor architectrue students at Warsaw University of Technology during seminar of choice regarding digital reconstruction of wooden synagogues;</p> <p>2) In summer 2023 with bachelor architectrue students at Warsaw University of Technology, and master students from Technology University of Łódź during seminar of choice regarding digital reconstruction of wooden synagogues;</p> <p>3) In autumn 2023 during international workshop about digital 3D heritage of CoVHer project with studnets of architecture from Warsaw Univeristy of Technology, Alma Mater Studiorum – Universita di Bologna, Facoltà di Architettura di Porto and Hochschule Mainz - University of Applied Sciences, as well as archaeology studnets from Universitat Autònoma de Barcelona.</p> <p>The second group, comprising digital 3D cultural heritage professionals, predominantly focused on archiving digital assets. Participants were project partners of DFG 3D Viewer project, which were professionals from the Institute of Archaeology at University Cologne, the Institute of Art History at the Ludwig-Maximilians-Universität Munich, the Architecture, Civil Engineering and Urban Planning Department of BTU Cottbus Senftenberg, and the Detushce Museum. They were asked for evaluaton of system after three differetn stages of work: at the begging wihtout any introduction to the system, after proivision of intorudctionary materilas and finally at the end of work.</p> <p>All participants were requested to report their experiences across four categories: metadata form, 3D viewer, provided guidelines, and overall experience. A 5-point rating scale was employed to assess specific issues, with 1 being the most negative and 5 being the most positive. The form length question was an exception, where a median value of 3 was considered ideal, and extreme values indicated either excessive length or brevity.</p>
Survey on education models and achievements of the gifted students
<p>An anonymous survey has been organized at the elite high-schools whose students won 47 medals at international olympiads in mathematics, physics and computer sciences in the four-year period 2019-2022. The goal of the survey is to analyze experiences and opinions of the best high-school students in the period of COVID in Serbia.The impact of switching from in-person to distance learning on the achievement of the gifted students has been analyzed. <p><span><strong>Background</strong> </span></p> <p><span>Gender medical knowledge is insufficiently integrated into university teaching in Germany. Gender awareness represents a key competence to integrate this knowledge into one's medical practice. This study is the first survey of the gender awareness of medical students in Germany.</span></p> <p><strong><span>Methods</span> </strong></p> <p><span>From April to July 2021, a quantitative cross-sectional survey in an online format using the 'Nijmegen Gender Awareness in Medicine Scale' (2008) was conducted at four German universities (Charité Berlin, Friedrich-Schiller-University Jena, Ludwig-Maximilians-University Munich, and the University of Cologne) with a varied implementation of teaching gender medicine. Students indicated their agreement or disagreement with assumptions and knowledge about the influence of gender in everyday medical practice (gender sensitivity), as well as gender role stereotypes towards patients and physicians (gender role ideology). </span></p> <p><strong><span>Results </span></strong></p> <p><span>The 750 included participants showed a relatively high gender sensitivity and low gender role stereotyping towards patients and doctors. The curricular implementation of gender medicine of the universities showed to have a significant influence on the students' gender sensitivity, as well as on their gender role stereotyping towards patients. Students who reported having taken classes in gender medicine showed significantly higher level of gender sensitivity. Cis-males showed significantly lower gender sensitivity and significantly higher gender role stereotyping.</span></p> <p><span><strong>Conclusion</strong> </span></p> <p><span>Implementation of gender medicine in the medical curriculum, attending courses on gender education and one's gender have a significant impact on medical students' gender competencies. These results support the need for structural integration of gender in medical education and gender trainings at medical schools in Germany.</span></p>

Aim: Against the background of an impending shortage of family practitioners, it is important to investigate the factors influencing the choice to become one. The aim of this study was to identify factors that encourage medical students to choose to practice family medicine. Method: Using a questionnaire, students in the fourth and fifth years of their studies in the Federal State of Hesse were asked about the factors that had influenced their choice of medical specialty and their experience of courses in family medicine. Predictors of an interest in practicing family medicine were calculated using multiple logistic regression. Results: 361 questionnaires were returned, representing a response rate of 70.9%. Confirmation of personal strengths, an interest in the field, and practical experience of the subject generally turned out to be important factors influencing the choice of medical specialty. 49.3% of students expressed an interest in practicing family medicine. A link existed between an interest in working as a family doctor and the opportunity to take over an existing practice, experience of medicine in rural areas, and an appreciation of the conditions of work. With regard to education at medical school, positive experiences during a clinical traineeship in family medicine and positive role models among teachers of general practice were identified as predictors. Conclusion: Almost half the medical students were open to the idea of practicing family medicine. Experience of medicine in rural areas and positive experiences of courses in general practice were linked to an increased interest in working as a family doctor. To promote this interest, it may be a promising approach to increase opportunities to collect experience of medicine in rural areas, and to encourage highly motivated teaching practices.
