Dataset of nitrogen in rivers and streams in sub-Saharan Africa

This is a dataset on concentrations and export of all nitrogen compounds in rivers and streams in sub-Saharan Africa reported in scientific literature (n=254) until July 2024. Data are aggregated by site and, where possible, data are reported for the dry and wet season separately. In addition to concentrations and export of nitrogen compounds, data on ancillary parameters, such as pH, electrical conductivity and dissolved oxygen area also included. Each site for which (approximate) coordinates could be extracted from the original study was assigned to a land cover class based on open source data on tree cover and the extent of cropland, settlement and wetlands across Africa (see second tab in the file 'Dataset.xlsx' for land cover classes and corresponding classification conditions as well as data sources). The third tab in the file 'Dataset.xlsx' contains links to the individual studies and full references are provided in the file 'Reference list.pdf'.

Population size, HIV prevalence, and antiretroviral therapy coverage among key populations in sub-Saharan Africa: collation and synthesis of survey data 2010-2023

This dataset contains surveillance study estimates for population size, HIV prevalence, and ART coverage among female sex workers (FSW), men who have sex with men (MSM), people who inject drugs (PWID), and transgender men and women (TGM/W) from 2010-2023. It was created to support the UNAIDS Estimates Key Population Workbook for use by HIV estimates teams in sub-Saharan Africa. Key population surveillance reports, including Ministry of Health-led biobehavioural surveys, mapping studies, and academic studies were used to populate the database.

The dataset was populated using existing key population size estimate databases including:

UNAIDS Key Population Atlas

US Centers for Disease Control and Prevention surveillance database

Global Fund against HIV/AIDS, TB, and Malaria surveillance database

Global.HIV database

Systematic review databases among MSM (Stannah et al, 2019 and Stannah et al., 2023) and PWID (Degenhardt et al., 2023)

and was additionally supplemented by a literature review of peer-reviewed and grey literature sources.

The data can be explored in this web application and the accompanying manuscript can be found here

Raw data for Infrastructure and Awareness Landscape Analysis in sub-Saharan Africa

Persistent identifiers that are well-connected are essential for enhancing research, researchers, and research institutions. The comprehensive raw data shared on PIDs infrastructure and awareness landscape analysis in sub-Saharan Africa is taken from service providers and organizations, including Open DOAR, the Registry of Open Access Repositories (ROAR), the Registry of Research Data Repositories (Re3data), UNESCO, Lyrasis (Dspace), Dataverse, Open Journal System (OJS), among others. The data shared here was collected in August 2023. The data shared are secondary data, and the position is strictly based on the primary source data author. The data is restricted to what is available on the internet and does not include locally hosted offline data.

Further analysis of the raw data suggested some salient implications for PIDs awareness in the region. Variations were observed across the various data sources, while some interesting correlations emerged from the collected data. There are countries with some PIDs infrastructure, while others are yet to establish a visible presence in PIDs infrastructure. The visibility of PIDs is somewhat related to the awareness level as well as the policy established on open access in the represented countries across the region.
