Advanced Resolution Canopy FLOw (ARCFLO) experiment employing the SUbcanopy Sonic Anemometer Network (SUSAN) in WS01 of the HJ Andrews Experimental Forest, July-September 2012
This dataset was collected during one of the ARCFLO (Advanced Resolution Canopy FLOw) experiment series’ field campaigns. This field campaign was carried out in WS1 of the HJ Andrews Experimental forest during July-September 2012 by the biomicrometeorology group, PI Christoph Thomas. The ARCFLO experiment series spanned a wide range of topographic conditions (flat, sloped, mountainous) and canopy architectures (grassland, orchard, open forest, dense forest) and was carried out between 2011 and 2014. It was funded through the NSF Career Award in Physical and Dynamical Meteorology to PI Christoph Thomas. The main goal of this project was to develop a novel improved framework to describe the airflow and its transport under weak-wind conditions for a continuous variation of overstory density and stratification. The objective is to i) identify forcing mechanisms of submeso motions, ii) evaluate the impact of plant canopies of different overstory density on the wind, temperature, and humidity fields, and iii) improve predictors for mixing in plant canopies that incorporate the important physical mechanisms. Observations were be made with a unique combination of new and standard techniques including optical fiber measurement of temperature structure, acoustic remote sensing, ultrasonic anemometers, and laser-illuminated flow visualizations.
Data for "Seed production in a dioecious subcanopy conifer tree Taxus baccata: the positive effect of neighboring males and female heterozygosity"
<p>A spreadsheet contains data for individual trees of Taxus baccata collected within the "Wadernik" reserve, Poland. Data include spatial coordinates (in meters), altitude (in meters), trunk perimeter (in centimeters), canopy closure assessment (0-fully open, 10-complete closure), the observed seed number, sex expression (female/male/undetermined), and genotypes at 20 microsatellite markers.</p>

Gene flow via pollen movement affects genetic variation in plant populations and is an important consideration in plant domestication. Fontainea picrosperma is a subcanopy rainforest tree that is of commercial interest because it is the source of tigilanol tiglate, a natural product used for the treatment of solid tumors. We identify patterns of pollen-mediated gene flow within natural populations of F. picrosperma and estimate genetic parameters and genetic structure between adult and juvenile groups using microsatellite markers. Our results show pollination events occur over much shorter distances than reported for tropical canopy species. At least 63 % of seeds are sired by male trees located within 30 m of the mother. On average, 27 % of the local male population contributed to successful reproduction of F. picrosperma with most fathers siring a single seed, however, the contributions to reproduction were uneven. Larger male trees with more flowers had gre ater reproductive success than those with less flowers (P < 0.05). There were comparatively low levels of genetic variation across the species (HE = 0.405 for adult trees and 0.379 for juveniles) and we found no loss of genetic diversity between adult and juvenile trees. Short distance pollen flow and low genetic diversity is theoretically a prelude to genetic impoverishment, however F. picrosperma has persisted through multiple significant climatic oscillations. Nevertheless, the remaining low genetic diversity is of concern for domestication programs which require maximal genetic diversity to facilitate efficient selective breeding and genetic improvement of this commercially significant species.

Floral attraction and flower visitors of a subcanopy tropical rainforest tree, F. picrosperma_Data
<p>1. Flowering plants in tropical rainforests rely heavily on pollen vectors for successful reproduction. Research into pollination systems in tropical rainforests is dominated by canopy species, while subcanopy plant-pollinator interactions remain under-represented. The microclimate beneath the rainforest canopy is characterised by low light levels and is markedly different from the canopy environment that receives more light energy.</p> <p>2. We studied the floral attractants and floral visitors of a dioecious, subcanopy tree, Fontainea picrosperma (Euphorbiaceae) in the Wet Tropics bioregion of northern Queensland, Australia.</p> <p>3. We found that wind pollination is rare and male and female flowers do not produce nectar. Female flowers are likely pollinated due to their perceptual similarity to pollen-offering male flowers. Female flowers had the same scent profile as male flowers and floral scent was an important floral attractant that acted to regulate pollinator behaviour. The two most abundant scent compounds present in the floral bouquet were benzyl alcohol and 4-oxoisophorone. These compounds are ubiquitous in nature and are known to attract a wide variety of insects. Both day-time and night-time pollinators contributed to successful pollen deposition on the stigma and diurnal flower visitors were identified from several orders of insects including beetles, flies, predatory wasps and thrips. Fontainea picrosperma is therefore likely to be pollinated by a diverse array of small insects.</p> <p>4. Synthesis. Our data indicates that F. picrosperma has a generalist, entomophilous pollination syndrome. The rainforest subcanopy is a distinctive environment characterised by low light levels, low or turbulent wind speeds and relatively high humidity. Female flowers of F. picrosperma exhibit cost saving strategies by not producing nectar and mimicking the smell of reward-offering male flowers. Insects opportunistically forage on, or inhabit flowers and pollination occurs from a pool of small insects with low-energy requirements that are found beneath the rainforest canopy.</p>

BOREAS HYD-03 Subcanopy Radiation Data
The BOREAS HYD-03 team collected several data sets related to the hydrology of forested areas. This data set contains solar radiation measurements from several pyranometers (solar radiometers) placed on the snow surface in jack pine (1994) and black spruce and aspen forests (1996). An array of radiometers was used to collect data for 3-4 consecutive days in each forest type to study the hypothesis that energy transfer and snow water equivalent would vary spatially as a function of canopy closure. The quality of the data is good, because the days were generally clear and the radiometers were checked daily to remove anything that landed on the radiometers.
BOREAS HYD-03 Subcanopy Meteorological Data
The BOREAS HYD-03 team collected several data sets related to the hydrology of forested areas. This data set includes measurements of wind speed and direction; air temperature; relative humidity; and canopy, trunk, and snow surface temperatures within three forest types. The data were collected in the SSA-OJP (1994) and SSA-OBS and SSA-OA (1996). Measurements were taken for 3 days in 1994 and 4 days at each site in 1996. These measurements were intended to be short term to allow the relationship between subcanopy measurements and those collected above the forest canopy to be determined. The subcanopy estimates of wind speed were used in a snow melt model to help predict the timing of snow ablation.
