Dataset for wave-by-wave particle tracking in the surf zone

<p>This dataset comprises 49 trajectories with 3D positions of buoyant tracers reconstructed from stereo camera imaging using two cameras and a standard triangulation process. The data is extracted from stereo image frames of the sea surface, captured at a rate of 30 frames per second. These images were collected between 15:13:00 and 17:18:59 UTC on September 7, 2019, near the island of Sylt, Germany.</p> <div>An appropriate coordinate system was used to better represent the tracer position time series for the analysis of tracers position, velocity and acceleration.&nbsp;</div> <div>Details about the coordinate system are provided in the associated manuscript and supporting information as well as in&nbsp;</div> <div><a title="https://agupubs.onlinelibrary.wiley.com/doi/full/10.1029/2021GL095722" href="https://agupubs.onlinelibrary.wiley.com/doi/full/10.1029/2021GL095722" target="_blank" rel="noopener noreferrer">https://agupubs.onlinelibrary.wiley.com/doi/full/10.1029/2021GL095722</a></div> <div>&nbsp;</div> <div>The dataset is organized into four columns: the frame time [&micro;s]; the X coordinate [m], defining the horizontal position with the origin at the base of Pole 2 (see above referenced paper)&nbsp;and oriented shoreward; the Y coordinate [m], denoting the transverse position perpendicular to the direction of wave propagation ;&nbsp;</div> <div>and the Z coordinate [m], specifying the vertical position with the axis oriented upward.</div> <p>These coordinates were obtained using a triangulation algorithm and adjusted using a coordinate system transformation to yield a precise, physically meaningful representation of the trajectories. The data is provided in .mat (MATLAB) format</p>

Particle paths in the surf zone in Sylt

<p>Buoyant particle paths measured&nbsp;in the surf zone in Sylt,&nbsp;obtained from a long-range stereo imaging system. A pair of 5MP digital cameras (Victorem 51B163-CX, IO Industries) were fitted with 200mm Canon EF 200 mm f/2.8L lenses, and captured the paths of oranges in the surf zone in Sylt, an island off the German North Sea Coast. The cameras were positioned on the dune overlooking the sea, at a distance of approximately 35 m from one another, and captured a portion of the wavy water surface located about 150 m away from the cameras. The cameras were triggered simultaneously using a PCIe6612 counter/timer combined with a&nbsp;SCB-68A terminal block (National Instruments). A total of 14 lagrangian particle paths are provided, acquired between 17:00 and 17:30 UTC on September 7th, 2019.</p>

Surf zone circulations and orange paths

<p>Spectrums.zip contains two types of files. The .spt file contain the raw data from the BunkerHill buoy outside Sylt. The fourth entry is the relative PSD of the day, and in the main body of the file the coloumns represent: frequency [Hz], PSD [m^2/Hz], Main direction, directional spreading, Skew, Kurt.<br> The .txt files contains the 2D SWAN spectrums used in the paper. For further description look to:&nbsp;https://swanmodel.sourceforge.io/online_doc/swanuse/node50.html.</p> <p>&nbsp;radsAndCircs.txt contain data about the circulations calculated in the surf zone. Each row corresponds to one circulations, and the coloumns correspond to:&nbsp;<br> Number, tide [m], spreadfactor, main direction [degr], x-location [m], y-location [m], <span class="math-tex">\(\sigma [m], \Gamma_{max} [m^2/s]\)</span>. Then 100 radii and then the 100 corresponding circulations.&nbsp;</p> <p>Tracers.zip contain the 6 orange paths described in the paper. They contain lon/lat coordinates for the oranges sampled at 3Hz.&nbsp;</p> <p>BOSZ_outputs contains all the data from all the runs used in the paper. The .bosz files must be opened with the load_BZ_array.py script. Of interest of the paper are the longitudes and latitudes, X.bosz and Y.bosz; averaged U and V velocites, Ubartmp.bosz and Vbartmp.bosz. The files are stored as a MxN array, where each element correspond to the value of the variable on the calcualted grid.&nbsp;&nbsp;<br> The Drifter.txt files contains all the data of the numerical drifters. They are built up as:<br> time, xDrift1, yDrift1, xDrift2, yDrift2, xDrift3, yDrift3, ...</p> <p>For data about the bathymetry we refer to the LKN.SH.&nbsp;</p>

Data from: Shortwave sand transport in the shallow surf zone

Empirical parameterizations of the shortwave sand transport that are used in practical engineering models lack the representation of certain processes to accurately predict morphodynamics in shallow water. Therefore, measurements of near‐bed velocity and suspended sand concentration, collected during two field campaigns (at the Sand Engine and Ameland, the Netherlands) and one field‐scale laboratory experiment (BARDEXII), were here analyzed to study the magnitude and direction of the shortwave sand flux in the shallow surf zone. Shortwave sand fluxes dominated the total sand flux during low‐energetic accretive conditions, while the mean cross‐shore current (undertow) dominated the total flux during high‐energetic erosive conditions. Under low‐energetic conditions, the onshore‐directed shortwave sand flux scales with the root‐mean‐square orbital velocity urms and velocity asymmetry Au but not with the velocity skewness. Under more energetic conditions the shortwave flux reduces with an increase in the cross‐shore mean current urn:x-wiley:jgrf:media:jgrf20828:jgrf20828-math-0001 and can even become offshore directed. For all data combined, the contribution of the shortwave flux to the total flux scales with urn:x-wiley:jgrf:media:jgrf20828:jgrf20828-math-0002, with a high contribution of the shortwave flux (∼70%) when this ratio is high (∼ 10) and low contributions (∼0%) when this ratio is low (∼1). We argue that the velocity asymmetry is a good proxy for the net effect of several transport mechanisms in the shallow surf zone, including breaking‐induced turbulence. These field and laboratory measurements under irregular waves thus support the hypothesis that the inclusion of velocity asymmetry in transport formulations would improve the performance of morphodynamic models in shallow water.
