Coarse-grained Near-global Aqua-planet Simulation with Computed Dynamical Tendencies

<p>This dataset includes the coarse-grained 3D state of the near-global CRM simulations (NG-Aqua). The simulation is run at a 4km resolution using the System for Atmospheric Modeling (SAM)</p> <p>A dataset derived from the same simulation is included at the&nbsp;<a href="https://dx.doi.org/10.5281/zenodo.1226370">10.5281/zenodo.1226370</a>. This current posting supplements this dataset with the dynamical tendencies for total water and liquid-ice potential temperature, respectively given by FQT and FSLI. These are computed by initializing&nbsp;SAM run at a 160km resolution with the coarse-grained&nbsp;fields from NG-Aqua; evolving the state forward for 10 30 second time steps; saving the output; and&nbsp;finally computing the difference with the initial condition.</p> <p>This netCDF dataset is split into several part files for more robust uploading/downloading. To download this data, download each &quot;part&quot; file, and combine them with the &quot;cat&quot; linux command:</p> <pre><code>cat noBlur.nc.part?? &gt; noBlur.nc</code></pre> <p>If using this with the uwnet code repository, you should then move this file to &quot;data/processed/training/noBlur.nc&quot;, creating that folder if necessary.</p>

Data from: Does losing reduce the tendency to engage with rivals to reach mates? An experimental test

<p>Male-male contests for access to females or breeding resources is critical in determining male reproductive success. Larger males and those with more effective weaponry are more likely to win fights. However, even after controlling for such predictors of fighting ability, studies have reported a winner-loser effect: previous winners are more likely to win subsequent contests, while losers often suffer repeated defeats. While the effect of winning-losing is well-documented for the outcome of future fights, its effect on other behaviors (e.g., mating) remains poorly investigated. Here, we test whether a winning versus losing experience influenced subsequent behaviors of male mosquitofish (<em>Gambusia holbrooki</em>) towards rivals and potential mates. We housed focal males with either a smaller or larger opponent for 24 hours to manipulate their fighting experience to become winners or losers, respectively. The focal males then underwent tests that required them to enter and swim through a narrow corridor to reach females, bypassing a cylinder that contained either a larger rival male (competitive scenario), a juvenile or was empty (non-competitive scenarios). The tests were repeated after one week. Winners were more likely to leave the start area and to reach the females, but only when a larger rival was presented, indicating higher levels of risk-taking behavior in aggressive interactions. This winner-loser effect persisted for at least one week. We suggest that male mosquitofish adjust their assessment of their own and/or their rival's fighting ability following contests in ways whose detection by researchers depends on the social context.</p>

Data from: Mesocosm experiment reveals scale-dependence of movement tendencies in sticklebacks

<p><span>Habitat fragmentation can have negative impacts on migratory organisms that rely on the functional connectivity between growing and breeding grounds. Quantifying the population-level phenotypic consequences of such fragmentation requires fine-scaled tracking of individual behaviour and movements across relevant scales. We here make use of a natural experiment where some populations of 'migrant' three-spined sticklebacks (<em>Gasterosteus aculeatus</em>) became 'residents', following habitat fragmentation five decades ago. To test whether residents have a lower movement tendency than migrants, we developed a novel experimental platform that allows the automated tracking of individual movements via RFID technology in a semi-natural mesocosm where spatio-temporal scales and environmental conditions can be manipulated. We found that residents moved significantly less than migrants at large but not at small spatial scale. This pattern was consistent across time and contexts (water flow and group size). Our study substantiates prior literature on rapid phenotypic divergence in sticklebacks in response to human-induced isolation and highlights the importance of observing behaviour in ecologically relevant setups that bridge the gap between lab and field studies.</span></p>

Hump-shaped relationship between aggregation tendency and body size within fish populations

<p>A distribution with high spatial variability may impair the bet-hedging capacity of a population, threatening population sustainability. Although the association between aggregation and life history traits of a species (e.g. body size) has been documented, the relationship between aggregation and size within a population has rarely been explored. As selective over-fishing may induce size truncation in the targeted stocks,it is critical to understand if such a truncation also undermines the distribution patterns of the population. In this study, we examined if and how the 'aggregation tendency' varies among different size classes of a population. Aggregation tendency was quantified as the exponent b of Taylor's power law (<em>V</em> = <em>a</em> × <em>M<sup>b</sup></em>), which measures the change in spatial variance (<em>V</em>) with the mean abundance (<em>M</em>) of a population. We estimated b by size class for each of the nine commercially important fish species in the North Sea, using ICES survey data from 1991 to 2015. Our study found that the relationship between b and body size within a population is hump-shaped, with a peak slightly larger than the 50% mature length of the species. This result indicates larger adults in a population tend to distribute less heterogeneously when abundance increases, suggesting that larger size classes play a critical role in reducing the variability of population distribution. Our findings highlight the importance of considering the combined effects of fishing-induced size truncation and changes in aggregation patterns in fishery management. That is, maintaining the size and spatial structure for the target stocks of selective fisheries is critical for the sustainability of the populations.</p>

Mesocosm experiments reveal the loss of migratory tendencies in a recently isolated population of three-spined sticklebacks

<p>In the 1970s, water management in the Netherlands resulted in numerous isolated populations of three-spined sticklebacks, which can no longer migrate from freshwater to the sea. We tested whether ~50 years of isolation resulted in reduced migratory tendencies in these resident sticklebacks. Lab-based individual testing showed behavioural divergence between residents and migrants, but also produced counter-intuitive results, especially with regards to movement tendencies. To detect differences in migration tendencies, we set up a semi-natural mesocosm, consisting of connected ponds, where movements of numerous individuals could continually be tracked at larger spatial scales. We found that wild-caught residents and migrants exhibited no differences in movement tendencies within ponds, but residents moved significantly less between ponds than migrants. Between-pond movements were consistent and the observed differences were robust across contexts (changes in water flow and group size). Our study reveals that larger-scale movement tendencies can diverge over short time scales in response to human-induced isolation, and highlights the importance of observing behaviour in ecologically relevant setups that bridge the gap between lab and field studies.</p>

Exploring Behavioral Tendencies on Social Media: A Perspective Through Claim Check-Worthiness

<h2>Randomly Sampled Users Dataset (RSU.csv)</h2> <p>This dataset consists of 11,173 users collected through Twitter's APIs. We collected 10,000 random English tweets in February 2023 using Twitter's Volume Stream API. &nbsp;The tweets were posted by around 3,000 users. &nbsp;For each user, we collected up to 100 of its most recent followees using Twitter's Following API. Through the Timeline and Liking APIs, for each user, we collected their most recent tweets (up to 3,200 tweets due to Twitter's limit) and liked-tweets (up to 3,200 too). We then filtered out users that have insufficient tweets (less than 100 original-tweets or less than 80 retweets/liked-tweets) to ensure that the sample sizes are statistically significant in our analyses. &nbsp;Finally, we have 11,173 users along with 40,405,150 tweets.&nbsp;</p> <h2>Humanities Dataset (HUM.csv)</h2> <p>This dataset contains 341,285 tweets and 498&nbsp;Twitter accounts from selected Twitter lists including <em>Book Author</em>, <em>Christianity</em>, <em>Artists</em>, <em>Buddhism</em>, <em>Musician</em>, and <em>Philosophers</em>. We use Twitter's List and Timeline APIs to collect the accounts and their most recent tweets (up to 1,000). The dataset was collected in January 2024.</p> <h2>Politics Dataset (POL.csv)</h2> <p>This dataset contains all tweets from selected U.S. news media and U.S. politicians including <em>Senators</em>, <em>House Members</em>, <em>US Governors</em>, <em>US Secretaries of State</em>, <em>US Cabinet</em>, and <em>US Election Officials</em> at collection time. We used Twitter's Timeline API to collect the accounts' tweets (up to 3,200 tweets). The dataset was collected in May 2023, with 8,153,745 tweets and 3,784 Twitter accounts.&nbsp;</p> <h2>Data Fields</h2> <p>Due to Twitter's content redistribution policy, we are only allowed to publish tweet IDs and user IDs. Therefore, in each dataset, each row/datapoint represent a tweet, containing two fields --- tweet_id and user_id.&nbsp;</p>
