Inter-group relationships influence territorial defence in mountain gorillas

<p>1. Many species show territoriality, in which territory owners have exclusive or priority use of a region. In humans, tolerance of others within our space also depends greatly on our social relationships with them. This has been hypothesised as one potential driver of the evolution of long-term, inter-group relationships, through enabling shared access of resources and easing disputes over space.</p> <p>2. However, extremely little is known about the importance of social relationships between neighbouring groups in non-humans for how space is used and shared.</p> <p>3. Using 16 years of data on the simultaneous movement and interaction patterns of 17 mountain gorilla groups, we investigated how the occurrence of aggressive and affiliative behaviour during inter-group encounters was influenced by both their social and spatial context.</p> <p>4. We found evidence of territorial defence, with rates of aggression increasing towards the centre of home ranges. Groups which had previously split from each other showed higher levels of affiliation during encounters with each other and experienced lower levels of aggression when within the other's peripheral home range. However, encounters within core areas of the home range consistently elicited higher aggression, regardless of the groups' history. Our findings indicate that not only are the social relationships between groups retained after they split from one another, but that these relationships enable groups to access certain areas with a reduced risk of aggression.</p> <p>5. This suggests that reduced aggression when accessing areas within neighbours' home ranges may be an advantage for the maintenance of inter-group relationships and a potential driver in the evolution of long-term, post-dispersal relationships and complex multi-level societies.</p>

As the value of a limited resource such as a territory increases, animals should invest more in the defence of that resource. Because reproductive success often depends on the quality of a breeding territory, reproductive success or failure may alter the perceived value of territory and affect an animal's investment in territorial defence. We used common loons (Gavia immer) to test the hypothesis that animals with recent breeding success would show stronger territorial defence than those with no recent breeding success. Surprisingly, successful loons responded less, not more, to a simulated intrusion. However, birds with success in the previous season also increased their territorial response as the breeding season progressed. In conjunction with past data showing that recently successful loons experience an increase in conspecific intrusions on their territories, we interpret our data to suggest that loons with recent success offset the cost of increased intrusions by adopting a more efficient strategy for territorial defence (e.g., limiting investment in resource defence until the time of the season when it is most critical).

Data from: Territorial defence in a network: audiences only matter to male crabs primed for confrontation

Territorial contests often occur in the presence of conspecifics not directly involved in the interaction. Actors may alter their behaviour in the presence of this audience, an 'audience effect', and audiences themselves may alter their behaviour as a result of observing an interaction, a 'bystander effect'. Previous work has documented these effects by looking at each in isolation, but to our knowledge, none has investigated their interaction; something that is more likely to represent a realistic scenario for species where individuals aggregate spatially. We therefore have a somewhat limited understanding of the extent and direction of these potentially complex indirect social effects on behaviour. Here we examined how audience and bystander effects work in tandem to modify resident male aggressive behaviour towards intruders in European fiddler crabs, Afruca tangeri. We found that male crabs with an audience showed greater aggressive behaviour towards an intruder compared to males without an audience, but only if they had acted as a bystander to an aggressive signalling interaction prior to the intrusion. Indeed, bystanding during aggressive interactions elevated aggressive responses to intruders maximally if there was an audience present. Our results suggest that bystanding had a priming effect on territory-holding males, potentially by providing information on the immediate level of competition in the local neighbourhood, and that same-sex audiences only matter if males have been primed. This study highlights the fundamental importance of considering broader interaction networks in studying real-world dyadic interactions and of including non-vertebrate taxonomic groups in these studies.
