A Corpus of Biblical Names in the Greek New Testament to Study the Additions, Omissions, and Variations across Different Manuscripts

<p>The analysis of textual variants of verses in the Ancient Greek New Testament across different manuscripts has mainly been done by close reading with manual effort. With the increasing number of transcriptions of the different manuscripts, quantitative analyses (so-called distant reading) can be used to search for patterns of omission, addition, or other variations, to formulate novel hypotheses to be investigated by close reading. In this work, we present a corpus of biblical names including spelling variation and inflections and their mentions in the transcriptions of the Ancient Greek New Testament.</p>

GIS as a heuristic tool to interpret ancient historiography: A case study to reconstruct what could plausibly have happened according to the accounts in New Testament texts

<p>This presentation summarizes the research findings of the TiG article (doi 10.1111/tgis.12762) which examines how GIS can be used as a heuristic&nbsp;tool to reconstruct spatial&ndash;temporal&nbsp;events from narratives&nbsp;in order to examine whether a scenario is conceivable within&nbsp;the narrative world. The narrative about Paul&#39;s escape from&nbsp;Berea (Acts 17:14&ndash;15)&nbsp;is used as a case study. Several interpretive&nbsp;issues related to spatial and temporal questions&nbsp;surround these texts. In the case study, three methods are&nbsp;applied: (a) least-cost&nbsp;path analysis on elevation data to&nbsp;construct journeys and travel times for Roman roads; (b)&nbsp;network analysis to find seafaring routes valid for ancient&nbsp;times; and (c) the integration of spatial and temporal data&nbsp;in a space-time&nbsp;cube. Our main finding is that the method&nbsp;yields insights into the spatial&ndash;temporal&nbsp;dynamics of the&nbsp;narrative. This helps a modern reader to better&nbsp;understand&nbsp;the narrative conceivability of a story in the mind of a first-century&nbsp;reader.</p>

A database of contexts with polypredicative reason constructions in the New Testament (База данных по контекстам с полипредикативными причинными конструкциями в Новом Завете)

<p>The database accumulates&nbsp;contexts with polypredicative reason constructions in the text of&nbsp;the New Testament.</p> <p>The initial sample was based on&nbsp;the distribution of reason conjunctions (used as keywords) in the translations of the New Testament into three languages: Russian (<em>poskol&#39;ku</em>, <em>tak kak</em>, <em>potomu čto</em>, <em>potomu, čto</em>, <em>ottogo, čto</em>, <em>iz-za togo, čto</em>), English (<em>because</em>, <em>since</em>, <em>for</em>), and French (<em>puisqu</em>(<em>e</em>), <em>parce qu</em>(<em>e</em>), <em>comme</em>, <em>car</em>). The raw sample obtained by automated extraction was then&nbsp;manually edited to remove the contexts containing irrelevant (non-causal) uses of the keywords and to split the verses containing more than one reason context.</p> <p>The resulting database contains 1630 reason contexts (in 1504 verses), which are likely to be translated with polypredicative reason constructions in any language.&nbsp;The database is intended as a tool for extracting relevant material for studies on individual languages and for typological studies of reason constructions.</p> <p>In addition to the main database, a smaller subsample of 86 contexts has been annotated for semantic/pragmatic types of reason meanings and for the information structure of the reason construction.</p> <p>The database was created at the&nbsp;Institute for Linguistic Studies, RAS&nbsp;with support&nbsp;from the Russian Science Foundation grant #&nbsp;18-18-00472&nbsp;&ldquo;Causal Constructions in World Languages (Semantics and Typology)&rdquo;.</p> <p>&nbsp;</p> <p>База данных объединяет&nbsp;контексты с полипредикативными причинными конструкциями&nbsp;в тексте Нового Завета.</p> <p>Исходная выборка была основана на распределении причинных союзов (послуживших ключевыми словами) в переводах Нового Завета на три языка: русский (<em>поскольку</em>, <em>так как</em>, <em>потому&nbsp;что</em>, <em>потому,</em><em>&nbsp;что</em>, <em>оттого,&nbsp;что</em>, <em>из-за того,&nbsp;что</em>), английский (<em>because</em>, <em>since</em>, <em>for</em>) и французский (<em>puisqu</em>(<em>e</em>), <em>parce qu</em>(<em>e</em>), <em>comme</em>, <em>car</em>). PAVONe: Platform of the Arabic Versions of the New Testament (pavone.uob-dh.org)

<p>PAVONe is a platform aiming at facilitating scholarly research on the early translations of the Gospels into Arabic and underlining the richness and diversity of these translations and their relations with the communities that have produced and used them. The platform is a database comprising a digital corpus of digitized and transcribed Arabic manuscripts of the four Gospels and lectionaries including both explicit and implicit verses of the Gospels with different layers of metadata (textual, paleographical, codicological, linguistic, etc.). In addition to this digital corpus, the platform provides a set of tools to enable scholars and researchers to manipulate those manuscripts and facilitate their study of the text.</p>

<p>The dataset deals with pecuniary legacies in 13th- and 14th-century Free County of Burgundy (Comt&eacute; de Bourgogne) testaments. It encompasses 15 last wills, dated from 1271 to 1347, made by eight men and seven women, registered by the archbishop of Besan&ccedil;on&#39;s ecclesiastic tribunal (officialit&eacute;). It focuses on the money the testator bequeaths both to his/her parish church and to his/her burial place. For both sites a wikidata ID is provided.</p>
