Visual Counts of Tree Reproduction near NEON plots at Harvard Forest since 2020

Mast seeding, a resource pulse that has cascading effects in the environment, is a measure that can provide insight into forest dynamics. When masting data is collected in sequential years it can provide information on how tree populations are responding to climatic and environmental variables, and can also be used to relate to other indices, such as seed-eating animal species. The objective of this study is to quantify the yearly seed production of mast seeding tree species at Harvard Forest which are located near National Ecological Observatory Network (NEON) plots. This project is part of larger NEON-enabled project examining mast seeding on a continental scale at 25 NEON sites in the United States, which uses mast seeding records in conjunction with NEON collected data products like mammal box-trapping, tick drags, and bird point counts. Data collected on mast seeding can be linked to these other indices at regional and continental scales.

Data from 'Tracability of Forest Reproductive Material with the quality label 'Plant van Hier': A DNA database with genetic profiles of native autochthonous tree and shrub species of Flanders, Belgium'

<h2>Background</h2> <p>Indigenous trees and shrubs play an important role in multifunctional forest management. They form a significant part of the biodiversity in our forests. Forest reproductive material (FRM) of autochthonous Flemish origin is sold under the quality label &lsquo;Plant van Hier&rsquo;, a certification mark of the Agency for Nature and Forests. To ensure the provenance of the seedlings, we developed a DNA-database of genetic profiles of potential parent trees, using species-specific genetic markers. This database enables the traceability of FRM of the &lsquo;Plant van Hier&rsquo; label throughout the entire production chain; from seed harvesting and cultivation to planting by the end user.</p> <p>This database contains the genetic profiles of almost all possible parent trees present within 27 Flemish autochthonous seed orchards of eight ecologically important tree and shrub species: <em>Carpinus betulus</em>, <em>Corylus avellana</em>, <em>Frangula alnus</em>, <em>Populus tremula</em>, <em>Sorbus aucuparia</em>, <em>Tilia cordata</em>, <em>Tilia platyphyllos,</em> and <em>Ulmus laevis</em>. The profiles were established using microsatellite markers (11 to 24 markers per species).&nbsp;&nbsp;New genetic markers were developed for&nbsp;<em>Carpinus betulus</em> and <em>Ulmus laevis</em>. PCR products were run on an ABI 3500 Genetic Analyser (Thermo Fisher Scientific).</p> <h2>Files</h2> <p>The files will be updated when new genotypes are added to the seed orchards. The current data files contain data from genotypes collected in the period 2018-2023.&nbsp;</p> <h3>Species_genotypes</h3> <p>These files contain the genetic fingerprints of the parent trees of autochthonous Flemish seed orchards. Missing data is indicated as &lsquo;MD&rsquo;. For <em>Carpinus betulus</em>, an octoploid species, the allelic phenotype is given instead of the genotype as the number of times that an allele occurs on a specific locus is not known.</p> <p>The next metadata is additionally given:<br>- Species: the Latin name of the species<br>- Seed_orchard: the name of the seed orchard in which the genotypes are located<br>- Code_seed_orchard: the code of the seed orchard in which the genotypes are located as given in the Register of Flemish Forest Reproductive Material (&lsquo;Register bosbouwkundig uitgangsmateriaal&rsquo;; inbo.be)<br>- Genotype: the fieldname given to the genotype<br>- Origin: the location where the genotype was collected in Flanders, Belgium. Genotypes were collected from natural stands which are assumed to have an autochthonous origin. When the specific location is unknown, the location &lsquo;Flanders&rsquo; is given.&nbsp;<br>- Year_sampled: the year in which the genotypes were sampled in the respective seed orchard for genetic analysis.</p> <h3>Species_binsets</h3> <p>These files contain the binsets and allele names that are used to score the alleles of the genotypes in the programme Geneious Prime 2019.3.2 (<a href="https://www.geneious.com">https://www.geneious.com</a>). For <em>Tilia platyphyllos </em>and <em>Tilia cordata</em>, the same binsets were used.</p>

Native tree growth and reproduction in response to reduction in the coconut palm (Cocos nucifera) canopy at Palmyra Atoll

These data describe competition for light (open solar path) between introduced coconut palm trees (Cocos nucifera) and native tree species between 2004 and 2008 at Palmyra Atoll, Northern Line Islands, Pacific Ocean. Data are contained in one table, including values from the start, end, and intermediate samples. The dataset measures the change in tree growth (DBH and height) and reproductive potential (flower and fruit production) in relation to time and open solar path value. Two treatments are considered: OSP values less than 50% created by C. nucifera removal, and OSP values greater than 50%.

Reproductive maturity in boreal trees, Northwest Territories, Canada

<p>In boreal North America, much of the landscape is covered by fire-adapted forests dominated by serotinous conifers. For these forests, reductions in fire return interval could limit reproductive success, owing to insufficient time for stands to reach reproductive maturity i.e., to initiate cone production. Improved understanding of the drivers of reproductive maturity can provide important information about the capacity of these forests to self-replace following fire. Here, we assessed the drivers of reproductive maturity in two dominant and widespread conifers, semi-serotinous black spruce and serotinous jack pine. Presence or absence of female cones were recorded in approximately 15,000 individuals within old and recently burned stands in two distinct ecozones of the Northwest Territories (NWT), Canada. Our results show that reproductive maturity was triggered by a minimum tree size threshold rather than an age threshold, with trees reaching reproductive maturity at smaller sizes where environmental conditions were more stressful. The number of reproductive trees per plot increased with stem density, basal area, and at higher latitudes (colder locations). The harsh climatic conditions present at these higher latitudes, however, limited the recruitment of jack pine at the treeline ecotone. The number of reproductive black spruce trees increased with deeper soils, whereas the number of reproductive jack pine trees increased where soils were shallower. We examined the reproductive efficiency i.e., the number of seedlings recruited per reproductive tree, linking pre-fire reproductive maturity of recently burned stands and post-fire seedling recruitment (recorded up to 4 years after the fires) and found that a reproductive jack pine can recruit on average three times more seedlings than a reproductive black spruce. We suggest that the higher reproductive efficiency of jack pine can explain the greater resilience of this species to wildfire compared with black spruce. Overall, these results help link life history characteristics such as reproductive maturity to variation in post-fire recruitment of dominant serotinous conifers.</p>

Sex differences in alternative reproductive tactics in response to predation risk in tree crickets

<p>1. Alternative reproductive tactics (ARTs) are variable, often discontinuous, behaviours that allow a particular sex to achieve enhanced mating success. Predation risk has been hypothesised to drive the evolution of ARTs, but few empirical studies have examined this. It is unclear whether predators affect fitness of the two sexes directly, by reducing survival, or indirectly, by altering mate-searching.</p> <p>2. In crickets, mate-search typically involves acoustic signalling by males and acoustic-mediated movement towards males by silent females. Males and females may however employ ARTs, which includes silent searching by males, and mating without performing phonotaxis in females.</p> <p>3. We empirically examined effects of increased predation risk on mate-searching behaviour and survival of male and female tree crickets, and their effects on mating success, using field-enclosure experiments with tree crickets <i>Oecanthus henryi</i> and their primary predator, green lynx spiders, <i>Peucetia viridans</i>. Crickets were allocated into three treatments with different levels of predation risk.</p> <p>4. Increased predation risk strongly reduced survival, and thereby mating success, for both sexes. With increasing predation risk, males reduced calling and increased movement towards neighbouring callers, with negative effects on mating success. By comparing with simulated random movement, we found that male movement was significantly directed towards other calling males, implying a switch to satellite strategies. Female movement behaviour, however, remained unaltered.</p> <p>5. Males and females thus differed in their response to comparable levels of predation risk, implying that the role of predation as a driver of alternative mate search strategies is sex-specific.</p>

Data for: The interplay of environmental cues and wood density in the vegetative and reproductive phenology of seasonally dry tropical forest trees

<p>The great phenological diversification characteristic of seasonally dry tropical forests (SDTF) suggests that these patterns result from a complex interplay between exogenous (e.g., climatic) and endogenous (e.g., morphological, physiological, anatomical) factors. Based on the well-established relationships of wood density with water-storing capacity and cavitation vulnerability in woody plants, we hypothesized differential vegetative and reproductive phenological responses to environmental cues for hardwood and softwood species. To test this hypothesis, we compared phenological patterns of pairs of conspecific populations of 10 species differing in wood density, occurring in two localities with slightly different climatic regimes, and evaluated the influence of three environmental variables (rainfall, photoperiod, temperature) on them. Our results, based on the assessment of the overlap of the phenological curves of conspecific populations occurring in different sites and on linear modeling, showed different effects of the environmental factors on phenophase attributes, depending on wood density of the study species, thus supporting our hypothesis. Leaf out in softwood species took place in the dry season, they shed the foliage at the first signs of drought, and once leafless, they flowered and fruited shortly after. By contrast, hardwood species bore leaves and flowers in the rainy season, shed their leaves several months after the rain ceased, and produced fruits during the dry season. We conclude that the role of environmental variables in cueing growth and reproduction cycles in SDTF tree species is interrelated with their wood density, a key endogenous factor crucially linked to plant hydraulics in these water-limited ecosystems.</p>

Reproductive output and telomere dynamics following calcium supplementation in wild Tree Swallows (Tachycineta bicolor)

<p>This data was the result of an experiment investigating whether biologically relevant differences in reproductive investment influence fitness in a wild bird species. We employed calcium supplementation to experimentally modify reproductive output in Tree Swallow mothers and offspring and we used telomere dynamics during the breeding season as a proxy for fitness. <span>To confirm that calcium supplementation positively impacts reproductive parameters at our study site, we initiated a 4-year trial of calcium supplementation with our Tree Swallow study population. In the following two breeding seasons, we used calcium supplementation to experimentally alter reproductive output and measured telomere length in mothers immediately before egg-laying and shortly before fledging to determine the direct relationship between reproductive investment and telomere shortening in this species. </span>Our study includes one hundred eighty-eight nests initiated and monitored over six breeding seasons. </p>

RAD-seq reveals patterns of diversification, hybridization, and the accumulation of reproductive isolation in a clade of partially sympatric, tropical island trees

<p>A common pattern observed in temperate tree clades is that species are often morphologically distinct and partially interfertile but maintain species cohesion despite ongoing hybridization where ranges overlap. Although closely related species commonly occur in sympatry in tropical ecosystems, little is known about patterns of hybridization within a clade over time, and the implications of this hybridization for the maintenance of species boundaries. In this study, we focused on a clade of sympatric trees in the genus <i>Diospyros</i> in the Mascarene islands and investigated whether species are genetically distinct, whether they hybridize, and how patterns of hybridization are related to the time since divergence among species. We sampled multiple populations from each of 12 Mascarene <i>Diospyros</i> species, generated genome-wide SNP data using 2bRADseq, and conducted population genomic and phylogenomic analyses. We found that Mascarene <i>Diospyros</i> species diverged millions of years ago and are largely genetically distinct from one another. Although hybridization was observed between closely related species belonging to the same subclade, more distantly related species showed little evidence of interspecific hybridization. Phylogenomic analyses also suggested that introgression occurred during the evolutionary history of the clade. This suggests that, as diversification progressed, interspecific hybridization also occurred among species, but became infrequent as lineages diverged from one another and evolved reproductive barriers. Species now co-exist in partial sympatry, and experience limited hybridization between close relatives. Additional research is needed to better understand the role introgression may have played in adaptation and diversification of Mascarene <i>Diospyros,</i> and its relevance for conservation.</p>
