Hubbard Brook Experimental Forest: Hourly Temperature Under Canopy by HOBO sensors at Valleywide Plots, 2013-2020
Air temperature at 1.5 m agl is measured at hourly intervals under the canopy at every fifth valleywide plot plus one more between watersheds 1 and 4. The sensors are maintained by bird crews and volunteers. These data were gathered as part of the Hubbard Brook Ecosystem Study (HBES). Hubbard Brook Experimental Forest: Valleywide Plot Tree and Sapling Inventory – 1995, 2005, 2015
The valley-wide plots are a grid of 431 sites along fifteen N–S transects established at 500-m intervals spanning the entire Hubbard Brook Valley. The plot network was designed by Paul Schwarz for spatial analysis of tree species distribution patterns within the valley. Multiple above- and below-ground attributes have been measured on these plots. This dataset includes forest inventory data at 10 year intervals, for 1995, 2005, and 2015. The full survey takes three seasons to complete, with the datatable listing the exact measurement interval for each tree. Data are included for both trees and saplings on 371 core plots (all surveys) and 60 densified plots (1998, 2008). Hubbard Brook Experimental Forest: Lichen grazing assessment on valleywide plots
Herbivory by terrestrial gastropods, particularly Arion sp. (a non-native slug), can alter epiphytic lichen communities; however, little is known about this interaction in forests of North America. We used surveys of grazing damage to lichen thalli in the field on 52 plots within Hubbard Brook Experimental Forest, NH. Grazing damage by terrestrial gastropods was widespread, though few sites had severe grazing. Grazing damage was significantly higher on flatter terrain and on broadleaf trees. Overall, lichen communities in the HBEF were moderately impacted by terrestrial gastropod grazing, but potential effects of the non-native slugs at higher elevations and impacts on lichen health of widespread, moderate grazing deserve further study. Hubbard Brook Experimental Forest Valleywide Plots: GIS Shapefile
This coverage was developed as part of Paul Schwarz's dissertation research. Fifteen North-South transects were established at 500m intervals to span the entire Hubbard Brook Valley. Between 1995 and 1997, 371 plots were positioned at 100m and 200m intervals along each transect. In 1998, 60 additional plots were positioned: three plots were placed at 25m intervals between two existing plots at 20 locations that were stratified according to elevation and aspect and selected at random. Hence, a system of 431 permanent 500 square meter circular plots were established. No plots were located in the six experimental watersheds designated for ecosystem research. The sampling layout of the plots was chosen to facilitate the analysis of spatial patterns in the forest vegetation by utilizing a wide range of distance intervals between plots. These intervals ranged from approximately 25m to several thousand meters. Data distributed as shapefile in Coordinate system EPSG:26919 - NAD83 / UTM zone 19N.
Epiphytic lichen surveys on 12 valleywide plots in Hubbard Brook 2016
Using the USFS FIA lichen indicator protocol we inventoried 12 valleywide plots of mixed broadleaf and conifer tree composition over an elevation gradient to examine patterns of lichen abundance and diversity in the valley and their possible correspondence to air pollution indices and landscape variables. The surveys were conducted as part of an NSF funded LTER REU project by Aílis Clyne in 2016. Voucher specimens from this study were deposited at the Cornell Plant Pathology Herbarium (CUP) and the results published in the Journal of the Torrey Botanical Society. Chemistry of Streamwater at the Hubbard Brook Experimental Forest, Valleywide Measurements, 2001
Streamwater chemistry has been measured at the Hubbard Brook Experimental Forest since 1963. This study expands upon relationships observed from long-term studies of stream water chemistry within the nine gaged watersheds at Hubbard Brook Experimental Forest, in order to determine whether those relationships hold true for the wider Hubbard Brook Valley. This dataset includes data from samples collected across the valley from tributary streams of Hubbard Brook. Measurements included ANC, pH, DOC, DIC, cations, anions, specific conductance and temperature. . These data were gathered as part of the Hubbard Brook Ecosystem Study (HBES).
