Long-term growth, mortality and regeneration of trees in permanent vegetation plots in the Pacific Northwest, 1910 to present
A network of more than 130 permanent vegetation plots provides long-term information on patterns and rates of forest succession in most of the major forest zones of the Pacific Northwest. The plot network extends from the coast to the Cascades in western Oregon and Washington and east to ponderosa pine forests in the Oregon Cascades. Most of the permanent plots were established during two intervals: from 1910 to 1948, and from 1970 to 1989. The earlier plots were established by U.S. Forest Service researchers to quantify timber growth in young stands of important commercial species and to help answer other applied forestry questions. The more recent period of plot establishment began under the Coniferous Forest Biome program of the International Biological Program during the 1970s, and continued under the Long-term Ecological Research program. A broader set of objectives motivated plot establishment since 1970, especially quantification of composition, structure, and population and ecosystem dynamics of natural forests. Plots have one of three spatial arrangements: (1) contiguous rectangles subjectively placed within an area of homogeneous forest; (2) circular plots subjectively placed within an area of homogeneous forest; and (3) circular plots systematically located on long transects to sample an entire watershed, ridge, or reserve. Rectangular study areas are mostly 1.0 ha or 0.4 ha (1.0 ac) in size (slope-corrected). Circular plots are 0.1 ha (0.247 ac), not corrected for slope. The tree stratum is the focus of work in closed-forest study areas. All trees larger than a minimum diameter (5 cm for most areas) are permanently tagged. Plots are censused every 5 or 6 years. Attributes measured or assessed at each census include tree diameter, tree vigor, and the condition of the crown and stem. Johnstone) for several long-term vegetation monitoring plots near Wickersham Dome that were set up by Les Viereck and Joan Foote following the 1971 wildfire and 1978 experimental burns. Earlier records are available in the BNZ long-term vegetation database. This dataset documents tree seedling/sapling and shrub measurements made in 2002. Lists heights of all individual paper birch (Betula papyrifera) present in a plot.

Tree regeneration after fire: Effects of burn severity, CPCRW vegetative cover analysis
This study examines the effects of burn severity on patterns of post-fire tree establishment in the boreal forest. We collected data from 5 separate field experiments examining seedling establishment across different severity levels in 4 burns in central Yukon Territory, Canada, and interior Alaska, USA. The experimental studies focus on the germination, survival, and growth responses of four common tree species, trembling aspen (Populus tremuloides), lodgepole pine (Pinus contorta), white spruce (Picea glauca) and black spruce (Picea mariana). Data on the soil organic layer (depth, moisture, bulk density, pH) were also collected at each site. This file contains visual cover estimates, by species, for 2000-2002 at the CPCRW site. Sample dates are: 4 August 2000 25 July 2001 16 July 2002. Values are percent cover in a 1x1m quadrat, where T=trace (less than 0.5%), out=outside quadrat but inside experimental plot. An additional line is included which give the full species names associated with the 6-letter codes used as column headers.

Tree regeneration after fire: Aspen removal experiment, vegetation cover 2000 - 2002
This research was intended to address the general question of whether asexual stem regeneration of trembling aspen (Populus tremuloides Michx.) reduces rates of establishment and growth of potential invading conifer species during the initial years following fire. Interactions between aspen and conifers were studied under natural conditions in a burned aspen stand with a high potential for aspen re-sprouting. The study contributes to our understanding of whether competitive interactions between tree seedlings are likely to help maintain deciduous stands across disturbance cycles by reducing the potential for successful conifer establishment. Vegetation cover measurements made on July 31, 2000. Data are visual estimates of % cover, made in a 1x1m quadrat centered in each plot. Values are listed by species, with T=trace (<0.5%) and Out=present outside the cover quadrat but inside the plot. A key to the species codes listed in the column headers is found in spcode.txt.
The vegetation composition, structure and regeneration status of Gole Natural Forest, West Arsi Zone, Oromia Regional State, Ethiopia
<p>This study was conducted in Gole natural forest (Dodola) West Arsi Zone of Oromia Regional State, Ethiopia. The study was intended to investigate the vegetation composition, structure, community types and the regeneration status. To collect the vegetation data, systematically 62 plots 20 m × 20 m (400 m<sup>2</sup>) were established at 100 m interval, starting from the top of the mountain. Tree and shrub species were counted and their cover abundance value was estimated. The data for herbaceous species were collected from five 2 m × 2 m sub-plots laid at the four corners each and one at the centre of the main plot. Height and diameter at breast height (DBH) of all woody species taller than 1.5 m and thicker than 2 cm were measured. R package was applied for cluster analysis. Indicator species analysis was performed in R Interpolated species accumulation curves. Estimate S 8.2 Software and Microsoft Excel were used to analyze the data. Rarefaction was applied to compare the species richness of the plant communities in the study area. Sorensen's similarity coefficient was used to detect similarities and dissimilarities among communities.</p> <p>A total of 114 plant species belonging to 57 families and 94 genera were identified. The most dominant families were Asteraceae, followed by Acanthaceae and Lamiaceaae. Out of 114 species 17 were endemic to Ethiopia. The study showed that high density was seen at lower height and DBH classes. Five plant community types were identified. The rarefaction revealed that there is difference in species richness among communities. The Sorensen's similarity index showed that, there was a difference in the distribution of plant species composition among the five plant communities.</p>
Monitoring programme on strict forest reserves in Flanders (Belgium) - site level stand structure, regeneration and vegetation data
<p>This dataset contains comprehensive statistics on stand structure, rejuvenation, and vegetation for each forest reserve included in the monitoring program on strict forest reserves in Flanders (Belgium). The data collection and processing methodology used are described in <a href="https://purews.inbo.be/ws/portalfiles/portal/41050863/Vandekerkhove_etal_2021_MonitoringProgrammeOnStrictForestReservesFlanders.pdf">Vandekerkhove et al., 2021</a>.</p> <p>The dataset encompasses information on 15 distinct strict forest reserves and covers one to three consecutive forest inventories following a 10-year cycle. </p> <p>The "<strong>site_info.xlsx</strong>" file provides details on the 15 sites, including central coordinates, surface area, forest type, and the year when they were set aside.
