Modern pollen data from the East Asian Pollen Database (EAPD): pollen, vegetation and climate relationship
<p>This is a modern pollen dataset of eastern Asia, in which a total of 1756 sample sites is selected from the original database EAPD (East Asian Pollen Database) which consists of 2858 samples. The sample types are mainly surface soil, moss, sediment top (lake, delta, peatland, river basin, reservoir and so on), and dust capture. The pollen data are mostly count numbers, but a few was originally given in percentage (marked with TRUE for proportion or percentage). We have checked pollen taxonomic nomenclature and combined some synonym pollen types from different original sources.</p> <p>This dataset includes only the samples collected in the areas under natural vegetation or land cover with low human disturbance, that the sites located in the agriculture areas or strong human intervention have been excluded. This screening procedure makes the pollen data readily available for biome and climate reconstructions. The contributors' original research concerning pollen-climate relationship from EAPD sources have been published in Zheng, et al. (2014 and 2008), which have revealed that pollen taxa in the dataset have significant relationship with climate variables. This dataset is potentially useful for multiscale paleovegetation and paleoclimate reconstruction studies in Asia. </p> <p>EAPD is developed and maintained by the Laboratory of Quaternary Science and Palynology in the School of Earth Sciences and Engineering, Sun Yat-sen University, Zhuhai, China.</p>

LT-Brazil: A database of leaf traits across biomes and vegetation types in Brazil
<p><span>Motivation: Leaf traits represent an important component of plant functional strategies, and those related to carbon fixation and nutrient acquisition form the leaf economics spectrum. However, observations of functional leaf traits are underrepresented in tropical regions in comparison with those in temperate areas. Brazil, a country with continental scale and vast biodiversity is a timely example, where many biomes are impacted by human activities and climate change. However, leaf traits relevant to understand vegetation responses to these impacts remain poorly quantified for many species found in the country. We compiled an extensive data set of four functional leaf traits for native woody species occurring in the Brazilian territory. In addition to trait observations, sampling dates and geo-references were compiled and climatic parameters and soil properties of each sampling site were extracted from several databases.</span></p> <p><span>Main types of variables contained: The LT-Brazil data set contains 3479, 1216, 775, and 775 clean observations of leaf mass per area, leaf nitrogen (N) concentration per unit mass, leaf phosphorus (P) concentration per unit mass, and leaf N : P ratio, respectively, from native woody species, encompassing information of biome, vegetation, taxonomic data, geographical coordinates, climatic parameters, as well as soil properties.</span></p> <p><span>Spatial location and grain: We compiled trait observations from 223 sites under native vegetation distributed in all main biomes (i.e., Amazônia, Caatinga, Cerrado, Mata Atlântica, Pampa, and Pantanal) across the Brazilian territory.</span></p> <p><span>Time period and grain: The data represent information published and/or sampled during the last 25 years.</span></p> <p><span>Major taxa and level of measurement: Our compilation was focused on trait data observed for native woody species, excluding monocots, palm trees, herbs, and hemiparasitic plants. Thus, 108, 478, and 1321 botanical families, genera, and species were included, covering <em>c.</em> 9% of the woody angiosperm flora of Brazil.</span></p> <p>Software format: Data are provided as comma-separated value (.csv) files.</p>
Russian Arctic Vegetation Archive – a new database of plant community composition and environmental conditions
<p><span>The goal of the Russian Arctic Vegetation Archive is to unite and harmonize data of plot-based plant species and their abundance, vegetation structure and environmental variables from the Russian Arctic (including historical Soviet data). This database can be used to assess the status of the Russian Arctic vegetation and as a baseline to assess biodiversity changes in the future. The archive can be used for scientific studies as well as to inform nature protection and restoration efforts.</span></p>

Permafrost soil database with information on site, topography, geomorphology, hydrology, soil stratigraphy, soil carbon, ground ice isotopes, and vegetation at thermokarst features near Toolik and Noatak River, 2009-2013
This database contains soil and permafrost stratigraphy associated with thermokarst features near Toolik Lake and the Noatak River collected by Torre Jorgenson and Andrew Balser during summers 2009-2011. The Access Database has main data tables (tbl_) for site (environmental), soil stratigraphy, soil physical data, soil chemical data, soil isotopes (ground ice), soil radiocarbon dates, topography and bathymetry, and vegetation cover. The site data includes information of location, observers, geomorphology, topography, hydrology, soil summary characteristics, pH and EC, soil classification, and vegetation cover by species. Soil stratigrapy has information on soil texture and ground ice. Soil physical and chemical data includes lab data on bulk density, moisture, carbon, and nitrogen. The database has 37 reference tables (REF_) that have codes and descriptions for variables used in site, soil stratigraphy, and vegetation cover tables.

<p>The LT-Brazil data set contains observations of leaf mass per area, leaf N and P concentration per unit mass, and leaf N:P ratio from native woody species across the Brazilian territory, encompassing information of biome, vegetation, taxonomic data, geographical coordinates, climatic parameters, as well as soil properties. We compiled data from several geographical coordinates in native vegetation distributed across all biomes (i.e., Amazônia, Caatinga, Cerrado, Mata Atlântica, Pampa, and Pantanal) found in Brazil. Our compilation was focused on native woody plants (i.e., trees, shrubs, subshrubs, and lianas), excluding monocots, palm trees, herbs, and hemiparasitic plants. The compiled data set covers <em>c.</em> 9% of woody angiosperm species of Brazil. Unidentified or mixed species were also considered when met our eligibility criteria. Contributions to expand this database can be performed through our repository at GitHub (https://github.com/emariano-git/lt-brazil.git). Major versions of the LT-Brazil data set will also be made available via the TRY Plant Trait Database (https://www.try-db.org).</p>

<p>This dataset was use in the manuscript "Shift from trait convergence to divergence along old field succession" publish at Journal of Vegetation Science. It contains the data of species presence at three different plots and species trait values (SLA, LDMC, height, seed weight and Phylogeny). We show that at the initial stage of succession, there is a scale-invariant pattern of trait convergence. On the contrary, in the late and intermediate stages of succession we observed that trait divergence became frequent at smaller grains and extents. The trend along the chronosequence is consistent with the theoretical hypothesis that predicts a shift from convergence to divergence along succession.</p>

Reproductive and vegetative phenology database of two progenies of Euterpe oleracea Mart. planted in the Amazon estuary
<p><span>During the period from May/2009 to April/2013, we monitored the reproductive and vegetative phenophases of two progenies of <em>Euterpe oleracea</em> Mart., planted in the floodplain forest of the Amazon estuary. We carried out prospecting on the east and west coast of the Amazon estuary with the aim of selecting native açaí palm matrices with phenotypic production characteristics during the period of low natural production of this palm.</span></p>
