Higher-order sequences of vocal mimicry performed by male Albert's lyrebirds are socially transmitted and enhance acoustic contrast
<p>Most studies of acoustic communication focus on short units of vocalisation such as songs, yet these units are often hierarchically organised into higher-order sequences, and outside human language, little is known about the drivers of sequence structure. Here we investigate the organisation, transmission, and function of vocal sequences sung by male Albert's lyrebirds (<i>Menura alberti</i>), a species renowned for vocal imitations of other species. We quantified the organisation of mimetic units into sequences and examined the extent to which these sequences are repeated within and between individuals and shared among populations. We found that individual males organised their mimetic units into stereotyped sequences. Sequence structures were shared within and to a lesser extent among populations, implying that sequences were socially transmitted. Across the entire species range, mimetic units were sung with immediate variety and a high acoustic contrast between consecutive units, suggesting that sequence structure is a means to enhance receiver perceptions of repertoire complexity. Our results provide evidence that higher-order sequences of vocalisations can be socially transmitted, and that the order of vocal units can be functionally significant. We conclude that, to fully understand vocal behaviours, we must study both the individual vocal units and their higher-order temporal organisation.</p>
Vocal performance increases rapidly during the dawn chorus in Adelaide's warbler
<p><span>Many songbirds sing intensely during the early morning, resulting in a phenomenon known as the dawn chorus. We tested the hypothesis that male Adelaide's warblers (<em>Setophaga</em> <em>adelaidae</em>) warm up their voices during the dawn chorus. If warming up the voice is one of the functions of the dawn chorus, we predicted that vocal performance would increase more rapidly during the dawn chorus compared to the rest of the morning and that high song rates during the dawn chorus period contribute to the increase in vocal performance. The performance metrics <em>recovery time, voiced frequency modulation</em>, and <em>unvoiced</em> <em>frequency</em> <em>modulation</em> were low when birds first began singing, increased rapidly during the dawn chorus, and then leveled off or gradually diminished after dawn. These changes are attributable to increasing performance within song types. Reduction in the duration of the silent gap between notes is the primary driver of improved performance during the dawn chorus. Simulations indicated that singing at a high rate during the dawn chorus period increases performance in two of the three performance measures (<em>recovery</em> <em>time</em> and <em>unvoiced</em> <em>frequency</em> <em>modulation</em>) relative to singing at a low rate during this period. These findings are consistent with the hypothesis that vocal warm-up is one benefit of participation in the dawn chorus. </span></p>

An analysis of avian vocal performance at the note and song levels
<p>Sexual displays that require extreme feats of physiological performance have the potential to reliably indicate the signaller's skill or motivation. We tested for evidence of performance constraints in Adelaide's warblers (<i>Setophaga adelaidae</i>) songs. At the note level, we identified three trade-offs with well-defined limits. At the song level, we identified two trade-offs, but their limits were less well-defined than the note-level limits. Trade-offs at both levels suggest that song structure is constrained by limits to the speed of both frequency modulation (while vocalizing and between notes) and respiration. Performance metrics derived from the observed limits to performance varied moderately among individuals and strongly among song types. Note-level performance metrics were positively skewed, as predicted by the hypothesis that performance is constrained. We conclude that physiological limits on frequency modulation and respiration constrain song structure in male Adelaide's warblers. Further work is needed to determine whether receivers respond to natural levels of variation in performance, and whether performance correlates with singer quality or motivation.</p>

Studies of trilled vocalizations provide a premiere illustration of how performance constraints shape the evolution of mating displays. In trill production, vocal tract mechanics impose a trade-off between syllable repetition rate and frequency bandwidth, with the trade-off most pronounced at higher values of both parameters. Available evidence suggests that trills that simultaneously maximize both traits are more threatening to males or more attractive to females, consistent with a history of sexual selection favoring high-performance trills. Here, we identify a sampling limitation that confounds the detection and description of performance trade-offs. We reassess 70 data sets (from 26 published studies) and show that sampling limitations afflict 63 of these to some degree. Traditional upper-bound regression, which does not control for sampling limitations, detects performance trade-offs in 33 data sets; yet when sampling limitations are controlled, performance trade-offs are detected in only 15. Sampling limitations therefore confound more than half of all performance trade-offs reported using the traditional method. An alternative method that circumvents this sampling limitation, which we explore here, is quantile regression. Our goal is not to question the presence of mechanical trade-offs on trill production but rather to reconsider how these trade-offs can be detected and characterized from acoustic data.
Evolution of vocal performance and song complexity in island birds
<p>Oceanic islands share distinctive characteristics thought to underlie a set of parallel evolutionary trends across islands and taxonomic groups – including life history traits, morphology and visual signals. To which extent acoustic signals also change in parallel on islands is less clear. Some important processes associated with insularity, such as founder effects and reduced sexual selection, could lead to a decrease in vocal performance and song complexity on islands. In a field-based study, we recorded 11 insular species and their closest mainland relatives. Out of the 11 species pairs, 6 live in the tropics (São Tomé / Mount Cameroon), and 5 in the temperate region (Madeira / southern France). For each species we measured two proxies of vocal performance (song duration and syllable rate) and one proxy of song complexity (syllable diversity). This study did not recover a clear relationship between the island environment and song traits. If as expected, syllable rate was lower in island species than in their mainland counterparts, the two other proxies showed no clear island-mainland pattern of divergence. Several factors may explain the absence of reduction for song duration and syllable diversity. Among those, relaxation of interspecific competition on islands may have led to an increase in syllable diversity, or correlations between song variables may have constrained song evolution. More studies on island species are needed to draw a better picture of divergence patterns and go beyond the confounding ecological factors that could explain peculiar song characteristics in islands.</p>

<p>Digital Archive of Mobile Performance DAMP-VP1k archive of Smule vocal performances, 100 singers, 10 Performance each.</p> <p>The dataset contains sung musical performances from the Smule app. Data files include audio.zip with all the compressed audio files, and metadata.csv describing some metadata about each performance, including unique identifiers for each recording, song, and singer, as well as binary gender labels, region labels, and social "love" counts from the Smule app.</p> <p>This archive is a subset of the DAMP-Multiple Songs archive hosted at https://ccrma.stanford.edu/damp/, which contains multiple performances from each of multiple singers, singing different songs, without much verification of the data. <p>This dataset contains audio content for performing vocal separation research. It contains performances with (1) backing tracks, (2) one or more isolated vocals files, and (3) a mixture of the two. This is a real-world dataset from performances on the Smule app, which includes non-linear effects processes on the mixture of vocals and backing track. <p>The Smule 300x30x2 dataset contains recordings of sung karaoke tracks, lyrics text files, and some metadata describing the songs being performed by each singer. This dataset was collected from performances on Smule by selecting the most popular singers, female and male, of the 300 most popular arrangements in 30 countries.</p> <p>The most popular arrangements were determined by counting song starts or joins (duet/group) of recordings for each arrangement, within the country of interest.
