Water Research, 118084. https://doi.org/10.1016/j.watres.2022.118084</p> <p>Abstract: Micropollutants present in the effluent of wastewater treatment plants (WWTPs) after biological treatment are largely eliminated by effective advanced technologies such as ozonation. Discharge of contaminants into freshwater ecosystems can thus be minimized, while simultaneously protecting drinking water resources. However, ozonation can lead to reactive and potentially toxic transformation products. To remove these, the Swiss Federal Office for the Environment recommends additional &quot;post-treatment&quot; of ozonated WWTP effluent using sand filtration, but other treatments may be similarly effective. In this study, 48&nbsp;h composite wastewater samples were collected before and after full-scale ozonation, and after post-treatments (full-scale sand filtration, pilot-scale fresh and pre-loaded granular activated carbon, and fixed and moving beds). Ecotoxicological tests were performed to quantify the changes in water quality following different treatment steps. These included standard <em>in vitro</em> bioassays for the detection of endocrine, genotoxic and mutagenic effects, as well as toxicity to green algae and bacteria, and flow-through <em>in vivo</em> bioassays using oligochaetes and early life stages of rainbow trout.</p> <p>Results show that ozonation reduced a number of ecotoxicological effects of biologically treated wastewater by 66 - 93&nbsp;%: It improved growth and photosynthesis of green algae, decreased toxicity to luminescent bacteria, reduced concentrations of hormonally active contaminants and significantly changed expression of biomarker genes in rainbow trout liver. Bioassay results showed that ozonation did not produce problematic levels of reaction products overall. Small increases in toxicity observed in a few samples were reduced or eliminated by post-treatments. However, only relatively fresh granular activated carbon (analyzed at 13,000 - 20,000 bed volumes) significantly reduced effects additionally (by up to 66&nbsp;%) compared to ozonation alone. Inhibition of algal photosynthesis, rainbow trout liver histopathology and biomarker gene expression proved to be sufficiently sensitive endpoints to detect the change in water quality achieved by post-treatment.</p>

Data from: Biofertilizers from wastewater treatment as a potential source of mineral nutrients for growth of amaranth plants

<p>Exploring alternative fertilizers is crucial in agriculture due to the cost and environmental impact of inorganic options. This study investigated the potential of biofertilizers derived from sewage treatment on the growth and physiology of <em>Amaranthus cruentus</em> plants. Various treatments were compared, including control treatments with inorganic fertilizer and treatments with biofertilizers composed of microalgae, biosolids and reclaimed water. The following traits were investigated: photosynthetic pigments, gas exchange, growth, and leaf nutrient concentrations. Results show that the concentrations of N, P, Cu, Fe Zn and Na nutrients, in the dry microalgae and biosolids, were quite high for the needs of the plants. The wet microalgae presented high concentration of Cu, Fe and Zn nutrients while reclaimed water contained high concentration of N, K, Ca and S. Na and Zn nutrients increased in the leaf of plants treated with dry microalgae and biosolid, respectively. At the beginning of the flowering phase, total chlorophyll and carotenoids contents were lower for plants grown with wet microalgae while for plants grown with higher doses of biosolid or reclaimed water total chlorophyll was increased, and carotenoids were not affected. Lower photosynthetic pigments under wet microalgae resulted in lower photosynthetic rates. On the other hand, amendments with dry microalgae and biosolid increased photosynthetic rates with the biosolid being the most effective. Higher applications of biosolid, wet and dry microalgae produced a considerable increase in shoot biomass of amaranth, with the dry microalgae being the most effective. Additionally, reclaimed water obtained after tertiary treatment of sewage with microalgae and biosolids applied alone showed promising effects on plant growth. Overall, these findings suggest that organic fertilizers derived from sewage treatment have the potential to enhance plant growth and contribute to sustainable agricultural practices.</p>

Suspect and Nontarget Screening Reveal the Underestimated Risks of Antibiotic Transformation Products in Wastewater Treatment Plant Effluents

<p>This repository is supplementary to&nbsp;the manuscript "Suspect and Nontarget Screening Reveal the Underestimated Risks of Antibiotic Transformation Products in Wastewater Treatment Plant Effluents"&nbsp;(DOI: 10.1021/acs.est.3c05008).&nbsp;This&nbsp;repository contains&nbsp;scripts of TPs collection and QSRR model as well the generated data set.</p><p>We compiled a suspect list of antibiotics containing 663 compounds. Corresponding suspect TPs were collected in silico with BioTransformer 3.0 and through a library search from PubChem data, which were both performed in batch mode using the patRoon 2.0 package. After merging results and removing duplicates, 88,823 TPs remained for suspect screening. Quantitative-structure retention relationship (QSRR) models were developed for the suspect antibiotics and TPs using target compounds to predict their retention times with the Retip package.</p>
