A global atlas of extreme wind speeds for wind energy applications
<p>Here we present a global, homogenized and geospatially explicit digital atlas of the sustained fifty-year return period wind speed (<em>U<sub>50</sub></em>)<em><sub> </sub></em>and associated confidence intervals based on ERA5 reanalysis output at 100 m a.g.l.. Four different approaches are used to derive <em>U<sub>50</sub></em> estimates using 40 years of hourly disjunct 20-minute sustained wind speeds. All rely on use of the Gumbel distribution to fit extreme wind speeds but differ in how the distribution parameters are derived. Resulting values of <em>U<sub>50</sub></em> are compared to reference wind speeds <em>U<sub>ref</sub></em> derived using five times the mean wind speed as specified in the International Electrotechnical Commission (IEC) wind turbine design standards. An observationally derived dataset used in evaluation of the atlas is also included, along with a MATLAB script used in deriving the <em>U<sub>50</sub></em> estimates.</p> <p>Associated publication is: Pryor S.C. and Barthelmie R.J. EOOffshore: New European Wind Atlas (NEWA) Data for the Irish Continental Shelf Region
<p><a href="https://eooffshore.github.io/">EOOffshore</a> is a <a href="https://www.seai.ie/">Sustainable Energy Authority of Ireland (SEAI)</a> funded <a href="https://www.seai.ie/data-and-insights/seai-research/research-projects/details/building-upon-copernicus-earth-observation-services-to-augment-wind-measurement-coverage-of-the-oredp-offshore-renewable-energy-assessment-areas">project</a>, which commenced in June 2020 in the <a href="https://www.ucd.ie/physics/">School of Physics</a> in <a href="https://www.ucd.ie/">University College Dublin (UCD)</a>. It presents a case study that demonstrates the utility of the <a href="https://pangeo.io/">Pangeo</a> software ecosystem in the development of offshore wind speed and power density estimates, increasing wind measurement coverage of offshore renewable energy assessment areas in the <a href="https://www.marine.ie/Home/site-area/irelands-marine-resource/real-map-ireland">Irish Continental Shelf (ICS)</a> region. It has involved the creation of a new <a href="https://eooffshore.github.io/datasets.html">wind data catalog</a> for this region, consisting of a collection of analysis-ready, cloud-optimized (ARCO) datasets featuring up to 21 years of available in situ, reanalysis, and satellite observation wind data products.</p> <p>The <a href="https://www.neweuropeanwindatlas.eu/">New European Wind Atlas (NEWA)</a> provides wind statistics covering onshore Europe, 100km offshore over European seas, and the complete North and Baltic Seas, based on <a href="https://map.neweuropeanwindatlas.eu/about">30 years of mesoscale simulations</a>. These catalog data sets contain 2009-2018 products for the ICS region, provided by the <a href="https://map.neweuropeanwindatlas.eu/">NEWA Map Layers and Datasets</a> website, featuring variables at multiple heights (metres above surface level). European Wind Atlas data disk
<p>This data set is a ZIP archive of the European Wind Atlas data disk; data set is described in Appendix D of the atlas:</p> <p>The main results of the European Wind Atlas analysis – the regionally representative wind statistics for each station – are furnished on a disk at the back of the Atlas. The disk furthermore contains the wind speed data in the form of histograms. The disk is divided into a number of subdirectories corresponding to the EC12 countries. The subdirectories are named as the country codes given below:</p> <p>B – Belgium</p> <p>DK – Denmark</p> <p>F – France</p> <p>D – Germany (FRG)</p> <p>GR – Greece</p> <p>I – Italy</p> <p>EI – Ireland</p> <p>L – Luxembourg</p> <p>NL – Netherlands</p> <p>P – Portugal</p> <p>E – Spain</p> <p>GB – United Kingdom</p> <p>Radiosonde statistics for all the countries are in a separate subdirectory with the name RS.</p> <p>The Wind Atlas data are stored as sequential ASCII files with the file name extension LIB, and contain 48 lines/records of information. India Onshore Wind Energy Atlas Accounting for Altitude and Land Use Restrictions and Co-Located Solar
<p>India faces the simultaneous challenges of meeting rising energy demand and reducing carbon emissions. To address these, India must transition to renewable energy sources. These high-resolution maps are used to quantify available areas for wind farms, after accounting for restrictions, including airports, buildings, protected land use, military zones, railways, roads, water bodies, waterways, wildlife and nature, high elevation and slope, and existing solar farms, to which policy-informed setback distances are applied. This study finds the wind and solar potential within available areas considering three altitudes (100 m, 150 m, 200 m) and four wind speed thresholds (5-8 m/s), and modern wind turbine and solar array dimensions. The raster files included here indicate available areas after aggregating restrictions for different combinations of altitude and wind speed threshold. Availability is indicated with a binary system in which available land is designated with a value of zero and restricted land is designated with a value of one.</p>
SEASAT SCATTEROMETER DEALIASED OCEAN WIND VECTORS (Atlas)
Contains wind speeds and directions derived from the Seasat-A Scatterometer (SASS), presented chronologically by swath for the period between 7 July 1978 and 10 October 1978. Robert Atlas et al. (1987) produced this product using an objective ambiguity removal scheme to dealias the wind vector data binned at 100 km cells, which were calculated by Frank Wentz.
