FIGURE 1 in Afromelampsalta, a new genus, a new species, and five new combinations of African cicadettine cicadas (Hemiptera: Cicadidae: Cicadettinae)
FIGURE 1. Partial tree redrawn from the world Cicadettini phylogeny of Marshall et al. (2015a) illustrating the positions of several species previously classified in Melampsalta. The African species are produced in a distinct radiation separate from the clade that includes the type species of both Melampsalta and Cicadetta. Similarly, the Pauropsalta clade is derived entirely from Austalian species not included in this representation. The historic concept of Melampsalta, Cicadetta and Pauropsalta is polyphyletic and the African species should not be incorporated in these genera.
