ScienceDex for research teams

Research data for your own analysis

Connect NIH funding, institutions, researchers, publications, and shared datasets to your university’s reporting tools. Retrieve the published measures and source coverage behind each portfolio.

Request institutional access

Plans are quoted and invoiced to your institution. Your agreement sets the monthly request allowance, request rate, and access period.

Available data

Explore all 25 NIH funding portfolios and search institution funding records. Publication, dataset, and researcher measures are available where a published release contains verified evidence. Coverage varies by institute and researcher.

The API serves published ScienceDex records. A full-catalog OpenAlex search and bulk export are not included in this first version.

Make a request

Send Accept: application/json and your key in the X-API-Key header. Keep it on your server and out of browser code and URLs.

API version 1 endpoints
GET endpointReturns
/api/sciencedex/v1/institutionsInstitution funding records. Filter by year and search; paginate with page and limit.
/api/sciencedex/v1/institutions/{slug}A single institution’s funding profile for a year.
/api/sciencedex/v1/portfoliosNIH institute and center funding summaries with source coverage.
/api/sciencedex/v1/portfolios/{slug}Published portfolio rows, selected measure, coverage, and release provenance.
/api/sciencedex/v1/researchers/{slug}Published Moneyball measures, work coverage, topics, and source receipt.
/api/sciencedex/v1/usageYour account’s monthly usage and limits; this request is unmetered.

Portfolio filters: year, yearStart, membership, attribution, metric, scope, search, department, activityCode, institution, and repository. Lists accept page (1–1,000) and limit (1–100; default 25). Researcher profiles accept year.

Responses wrap results in data with a requestId. Portfolio results retain the analysis release and coverage counts. A missing metric means evidence is unavailable or below its required coverage; it does not mean zero.

Usage and retries

Each successfully completed data request uses one request from your account’s allowance. All your keys share the same allowance, which resets on the first day of each month at 00:00 UTC. Check the X-Monthly-Limit and X-Monthly-Remaining response headers or the usage endpoint.

  • 400: correct the request parameters. 401 or 403: check your key and access period.
  • 404: the record or published researcher measures were not found.
  • 429: a rate or monthly limit was reached. Follow Retry-After.
  • 503: a view is not prepared or the service is unavailable. Retry after 60 seconds.

Rejected requests and failed data queries do not use the monthly allowance. Failed queries still count toward the per-minute limit. Retrying a completed request counts again, including after a lost connection. Portfolio views are served from prepared results; contact us to prepare the filters your team needs.
