Trees were derived from 905 bp of mtDNA (472 bp from CO1 and 433 bp of cytB). Numbers in bold above a branch are percent support by bootstrap/percent support by symmetric resampling for various clades, and numbers in italics below a branch are the number of substitutions/number of synaporphies along that branch. The tree was rooted on a specimen of Dolichovespula arenaria from Alaska. Tree topologies were qualitatively identical using four distinct phylogenetic algorithms (see text for methods).
