The Fall of the Rebel Angels statue

About 1715-25 Southern German or Austrian Limestone Valiantly wielding his flaming sword, Saint Michael casts a group of rebel angels, portrayed as demons, out of heaven. The demon directly under Michael's feet has two faces, representing deceit. This group was carved with great mastery from Solnhofen limestone, found in the southern German state of Bavaria, where devotion to Saint Michael was par- ticularly prevalent in the Baroque period.
