The vegetation around Cuyler Manor, near Uitenhage (Kariega), where Forbes briefly sojourned, is a dense, spiny, near-impenetrable thicket. Here a mature specimen of Aloe ferox, from which leaves have been harvested previously for juice-tapping, grows in the foreground. Note the presence of Opuntia ficus-indica (L.) Mill. (light greyish green pads in the distance), the invasive New World cactus, which would have been absent from the area when Forbes visited Kariega. D.
